Peeve: When you don't recognize the worst parts of yourself.

It's very hard for me not to beat myself up over things I do, rather than putting that energy towards just not doing them. This gives me reason to beat myself up over not recognizing this. Which gives me reason to....

Sometimes I understand why some people drink.

If a system is relatively simple, doesn't have a ton of special exceptions or radically shifting rule sets in the same game, then I am down with trying something new.

How many people here started with RPGs like Toon or Paranoia or CP2020? Even early (A)D&D was deeply simple: Pick a class, at each level you might pick a thing, and leave all the rest of the work to the DM or module designers.

Years ago (in the most recent Wora timeframe), Ink(@Darkwater, I can't remember his Wora nick) with some light frustration mentioned how that we're using these incredibly powerful computers and yet almost never did we utilize it.

Nuku, our resident furry now writing Ponyfinder god bless 'im, did utilize it and his Mucks were almost always incredibly popular, partially from theme and partially from implementation.

The unfortunate part is that we're not all game designers, we're not all code developers, and we're not all GMs. When we find a game with the magic balance of all three, it can be simple or it can be complex but I guarantee it will gain popularity. If it can hit critical mass of popularity, it will keep for quite some time.

I didn’t realize until quite late that Terry Pratchett almost never described anyone except for the purpose of the narrative.

Every character ended up looking like exactly like I imagined.

Otaku (おたく/オタク) is a Japanese term for people with obsessive interests, particularly in anime and manga.

      Well...darn?

Otaku was the SR2/3 term for what would become Technomancers, in SR4/5

So we can blame Tom Dowd? Because...that's not even a little bit of a stretch for me.

I’m getting burnout on a considerable amount of nostalgia bait.

I don't think sequels are nostalgia bait. If every episode is "focus on an old character," then sure--but it doesn't look like that will be the case.

“Look, it’s 7 of 9! Look, it’s Data! Look, Riker!” That’s bait. It makes me worried that they will focus on these characters and not on exploring new territory.

Or almost as bad: Exploring new territory the same way they did a decade ago.

With the exception of Jeri Ryan, I don’t have faith in the other non-Stewart actors to carry a new series. I know that Paramount/CBS can hire a director good enough to manage it, and Spiner seems to be playing the same ol’ Data from the little bit that we see, so I won’t nay-say it outright, but we’ve been down this road before in different contexts.

      We will see.

      Dat Picard trailer tho.

You mean Star Trek: The Next Geriatrics? I’m honestly disappointed at all the returning characters, and will wonder how they deal with Data after, you know, what happened.

I’m getting burnout on a considerable amount of nostalgia bait. The start of the trailer had me cautiously optimistic, then excited, then...nnnnghhhh. And I hear Riker and Troi will be making appearances and just stop.

I know I’m probably pretty alone in this, but Patrick Stewart is an amazing actor. He can play a range that would bring a different tone and take on the series. Now I’m worried for it.

Well, I hope at least this helps all the TNG actors’s careers, at least.

Can't help with Ares but I coded a FAE Game a while back so I can answer some questions about FAE ??? @Thenomain is your best choice for questions about Fate.

Not Fate Core. I have a decent grasp of the older SotC, but it's only been adapted to Fate Core in "Strange Tales of the Century". Which I should have around here somewhere.

I read through quite a bit of Dresden Files, and am quite the fan of diminishing refresh pool in exchange for better powers.

The Fate Point economy doesn't sound hard to code but I don't know how you're going to manage Tags. I can envision it, and it sounds like something a thousand times more effective on a website than an online text game.

I just haven't sat down to understand the moves (or whatever they're called, actions perhaps) in the Fate Core's attributes.

Response: "Thank you for your suggestion. Senior management did a lot of research on it and this is how they wanted it."

Me (to self): "Maybe senior management wants to deal with the uptick in time it takes explaining this very easy to solve problem."

@krmbm said in OOC Knowledge Levels Question:

Okay, so this still isn't Ares encouraging you to share it, which seems to be the crux of the issue?

There is no issue. This was a misunderstanding being drawn out into a discussion.

Even before the misunderstanding was understood, it was not an issue. It was a statement.

The reminder on Ares to start a scene pops up one time, tells you that you won't have full functionality if you don't open a scene, and then you never hear from it again.

So you're telling me that Ares says that functionality is being withheld unless you engage with a system? Because this does not sound like a neutral informative.

Again, this is not an issue, but a statement reinforcing what @Ominous just said:

Software can inform culture and culture can inform software.

I go even further on this one: The design of a door encourages or discourages certain behavior, even if that encouragement or discouragement is not intended. For example, the door with the self-locking bar on it is incorrectly used about a third of the time. (Can cite, but it would take a while.) But if something like a rubberized wrap or rectangular push-plate is put on one side of the bar, the incorrect usage drops to almost zero. Why? Design informs use, and use informs design.

This is not an issue, it's just a statement of fact.

Ares encourages me to save a scene because it’s expected behavior when RPing on Ares.

      Sorry, it does?

This is a fair distinction. Then change my "save a scene" to "start a scene". That's easy enough.

      🤷

I have never shared a scene in my life.

Well, one, because everyone seemed excited for it to be shared.

I know that I’m probably in the minority by a lot, and it doesn’t bug me when people do, but from my context the “are you suuuuuuure you don’t want to share this scene?” is there to encourage me to participate in the social system, “your unshared log is about to die!” doubly so. This isn’t a Word document to me; it’s just some RP, I enjoyed it, I’m going to move on.

Word encourages me to save the document because it’s expected behavior when I’m writing a text document. Ares encourages me to save a scene because it’s expected behavior when RPing on Ares. It’s wrong in my case, but that’s what I get for not being the usual Musher these days.

      @Sparks

The only time I've really had problems with OOC secrecy is in its enforcement. "You can't know that" was a common statement for people on WoD games who didn't want to lose control of their character's story to the detriment of others'. Staff would be the arbiter of what any character could and couldn't know. At its worst players would be given censures, or "strikes", if they played out things that staff didn't think they should know. It was horrible.

Nowadays, I see people being given the latitude to share as much about their own personal characters as they want. There are things I don't want to know—it's very hard for anyone to not to act differently if you know certain things. Go ahead and keep that stuff a secret.

      --

But there is a lot of gray, a lot of half-secrets, a lot of things that people may or may not know depending on their connection to people who do know. Some of this is through pre-game character history. Some of this is through NPC connections (and worse if it's time-sensitive information). Sometimes a player makes a reasonable call, or a selfish call, as to deciding they are grounding the information learned OOC into their character, and it's sometimes very, very hard to tell the difference between the two motivations.
