      @surreality said in What locations do you want to RP in?:

      @Thenomain Wouldn't this be supremely easy? Like, have a 'is hangout' attribute on the room parent and thus all other rooms? Default to 0 for no, 1 for general hangout, <name of group> for 'yes, but for <name of group> only'.

      Sure it's very easy to do, but making it something that people would use is not.

      Non-sequitur. How to implement classification and reporting tools is easy compared to what to classify and report on.

      You know, I want a way for all the hangouts to auto-list on +hangouts, +where, +directory, and so on. These three commands are practically the same, anyhow, and small problems we've had in the past ("this is a secret hangout" or "this is my house please stop listing it") can be solved in a relatively simple way.

      That we have not sat down, as a community, and worked out that way is just why we keep re-inventing the wheel.

      To my eyes, Savage Worlds is a quick wargame, with attempted nods at any flavor at all, as far as the system goes. They can certainly dish out the sourcebooks, but all of that can easily be translated into any game system. Otherwise SW just always comes across as bland to me.

      So it's a modern GURPS. Seeing how many people still drool over the crazy grandpa of generic RPGs, I don't see this as a bad thing. Mind you, I think Slipstream knocked it out of the fucking park.

      Just thought of Warhammer 2nd Edition too.

      I was amazed by how dark this game is without being inaccessible. Burning Wheel can be nice and dark, too, but is very fiddly for the adventurers. There is some Warhammer RPG Love Letter (i.e., a game created because of how much they like the Warhammer RPG) and it just didn't seem easy to grasp.

      @Bobotron said in Which canon property/setting would be good for a MU* ?:

      @Thenomain
      Heh. Seriously though, you get some inbuilt conflict and a reason for PvP. Ignoring the WoD fansplat for it, the TV series and first movie make a solid background (and just ignore the SPESS ALIUMS origin from the second and third movies).

      There were more movies? I remember the one. I think some other studio tried to make some kind of knock-offs, but somehow starring the same people. They were filmed competently, except for the last one. It was filmed like a made-for-TV movie which was also strange, because it starred people from the TV show, too.

      One of the mild issues I have with Highlander is the same problem a lot of people have with Vampire; all the interesting stuff happens or happened over eons, and suddenly a bunch of chaotic stuff is breaking out in a comparatively tiny amount of time. The movie (again singular) staged this embarrassingly well.

      The TV series had to bring in other antagonist groups, Buffy-style, to create a sustainable episodic feel. Or for that matter, Dresden Files-style. Now there's a world that's so rich that you could pick any three groups (organized or loose or both) and have a great time.

      (I'm kidding; the "Immortal" fan-splat is almost as infamous as the official Gypsy one. Almost.)

    • RE: RL Anger

      I have learned too late that being an adult is stupidly time-consuming. I mean it; all I'm trying to do is set up a new account on a different cellphone carrier. I've been on the phone for longer than 20 minutes. Because their credit check system is down, I've been on hold for about 10 of that. How on earth do we manage to get anything done? No wonder that the human race can't manage to get off our home planet.

      On the positive side, there's no hold music.

      edit: After another almost 10 minutes on hold they turned the hold music back on.

      So while this is something I did learn a very, very long time ago, it's still something I should have learned sooner than I did:

      1. People will derail online conversational threads.
      2. People who complain about a thread being derailed will still do it in other threads.

      Not complaining, here, just sayin'.

      So it seems we have combined blaring your car stereo with talking loudly into the bottom of your cellphone: Walking around playing music from your cellphone wherever you are!

      I hope this is a trend that ends with a few broke cellphones.

      Notice: I am responding to something from pages and pages ago.

      Notice: I am kind of the opposite of a superhero comic book fan. I have liked a lot of the movies, because they are fun, but when it comes to theory I’m not there.

      1. I watched a video of Movie Bob explaining, at length, the Lantern Corps. It was concise, positive, and made me excited for this concept that came out of, essentially, “make anything as long as it’s green and doesn’t effect wood”. I mean, except for the Sexy Color, I like what they tried to do. Would be interested to see where that goes.

      edit: Part One, Part Two (the one with the Emotion Spectrum explained for us newbs).

      1. I’ve told him this personally, but I would have no contention playing a multiverse mash-up as described by @coin. One of the things that absolutely scares me away from any roster system is that not only that you may have history there that you weren’t aware of and having to negotiate hooks severed with other parts of the game, but it’s entirely possible to play it wrong and mostly this is no longer that character, it’s now another authors take on that character.

      This may explain why I can’t get into superhero comics.

      @surreality

      Last from the tangent here for me, but have you looked at some of the files people are calling critical? I’m still spammed by default on supposedly pending news, jobs, votes, and boards on games that I log into with a 100% fresh new character. And this isn’t just a WoD game problem, either.

      Anyhow. Farscape. Yes.

      @BobGoblin

      I think if that this were true we would see more Fate games around, but I’m also very okay with the thought that we just haven’t hit the right tone with people on that yet. Aether was extremely popular until the system-heavy players started outweighing the mainly-narrative people.

      1st or 2nd ed.?

      Hell, I don’t care. You could use Gurps if you really wanted. (Not really. Please do not use Gurps.)

      The 1st ed Roll and Keep system has had a bit of a new following lately, and even the wacky swordsman school system will also probably be acceptable due to that. 2nd edition has a lot more narrative input, so unless you want to harden the rules more, I’d bet you’d have a harder hill to climb.
