    • RE: Shadowrun: Modern

      @DnvnQuinn

      Who me? Push racism/specesism to its limit? I kid; the original game did heavily imply this, but here's one of the things I want to do:

      Take whatever your genetic makeup is. Choose a metahuman trope from one of them. Dwarves? How about Biloko? Troll or Oni? How about something besides frickin' Elves? (Which are mostly Scandinavian et al. anyway)

      While doing scant pre-research on this, I had a vision of Shadowrun with no metahumans, just humans. The vision was pretty glorious, but I don't think that would quite be Shadowrun, but I want a world that breaks out of Tolkeinrun. I want to push culture, creed, neighborhood, and the personal as a grand opposition to any future without choice.

      Alright, sure, let's play it your way.

      @Lithium said in Where have all the crunchy games gone?:

      Maybe it's just a sign of the times, but we need new games with crunchy systems. We can't rely on these ancient games with all their drama and dinosaurs to really supply a fair and unbiased game for new people.

      This is downright naive, connecting "new" to "fair". You might as well try to connect "crunchy" to "fair". I doubt even a Mud defaults to "unbiased", as it all depends upon how it's run.

      Hell, how old is a game before it's no longer "new", until it has "dinosaurs"? (Subjective answer: six months to a year, or until its first war plot. Exception: games about war.)

      So yeah, even analyzing it closer, there's a lot going wrong with this criteria.

      ... There, played your game. Enjoy.

      @Lithium

      So your question isn't "where have all the crunchy games gone", but "I'm looking for a crunchy game to play, help me find one". It's never fun trying to give someone an honest answer to their question and their reply is, "No, not good enough."

      Aren't there games out there using M&M3? That's crunchy. Tenebrae (D&D), crunchy. WoD, crunchy. What do you consider "crunchy", @Lithium?

      Not only have I read it, but I tried to create a roller for it. Hah, no.

      I do have the second full rule book beta sitting around, but decided to watch Archer instead. Looking forward to it.

      Throwing things directly into the tables. I never looked at the API because I imagined it was difficult to trigger from TinyMUX.

      Addendum: I imagine the risk of inserting directly into a MediaWiki table to be pretty high, tho, since sometimes they change them or plug-ins change them for fun. But what the hell, right?

      No worries. I can, as has been noted, be kind of a twerp, and I have no idea what you find objectionable or disagree with, so the offhanded comments.

      So, bringing players into games easier. Time To Mush. Zero-to-One. Let's do this?

      Horrifying. Now I know that @Saulot doesn't always think I am the most awesome thing since sliced bread. I don't know how I'm going to live.

      It's pulling things from/pushing things to the game that's been... not something that happens much. The news files are written on the wiki and pulled over to the game, which makes edits/quick changes/additions far easier. I'd love to have similar functionality for more complex things, but we don't have that (at the moment, honestly @Thenomain worked a miracle just getting us that far as it is).

      This wiki news and help interface system was 100% @Chime. I followed in her footsteps, maybe cleaned up some features, maybe figured out how to add one or two more, but it was her ability and persistence that made even the most basic part of it possible. Compared to her, I'm absolutely a poser.

      @faraday said in Telnet is Poop:

      @TNP said in Telnet is Poop:

      Whoever coded Brave New World managed it with Mediawiki. Logged scenes would transfer to the wiki somehow.

      Be curious to know how they did it.

      Once you know how MediaWiki puts things together, it's not that hard. Easier to read than write, of course, but if they already did the hard work then I want to see their code too.

      For the curious: The way MW stores its tables is sometimes kind of stupid. You can see the legacy going on, but hey, it works.

      @Creepy

      I think I am going to have problems with a woman in pants being called Victorian, knowing why it was called that. Now if it were Edwrdian, sure, but are you okay with accelerating to the 1920s? People could use Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite as a played-by. Win-win? Hell, the Little Black Dress was invented in the Edwardian era.

      Maybe that's the true apocalypse?

      @GirlCalledBlu

      No sweat. You did, but it could have been by accident, as it happens especially on phones and tablets. See the "Shaming" thread for my view on down votes. That is, sure go ahead but the input is better, and for me this thread is all about feedback. Bringing players into games ("Time To Mush") is pretty important to me, and I will tacitly abuse my admin ability to improve my end of the conversation.

      Edit: And I'll look into if the new version of this forum software can reveal downvoters, again.

    • RE: The Shame Game

      Is down voting really shaming? I mean, it's hard to imagine a less effective form of feedback. Even on sites where the down-vote is more measured and more meaningful it doesn't represent anything more critical than "I don't think this view is worth consideration". I think it's petty to consider that shaming.

      It's nothing compared to the direct reply. For instance, the offhanded desire of someone else's death, which I understand has been done on occasion. Pointing out someone who does that? That's shaming, and well-deserved at that.

      Didn't I mention Evennia? I did. I didn't mention Ares because I don't know it's acceptance rate.

      Tho good on catching me out on the hyperbole. Are you ready for the support needed to change a few dozen games over to Ares? I'm ready to start coding for other games.
