Just so everyone is now aware. It's that time of year again.
I have less money this year than I did last year, so Steam can back the fuck off.
If you play a stupid little flash game you apparently have a chance to win free games.
?
Log into Steam, fight the ... Duldrums or Borings or whatever cutesy thing they have.
I wouldn’t be surprised if anyone tries and fails to be engaged longer than thirty seconds. It really is that bad. I don’t know what the chances of winning any of the games are.

My life is a lie.
Young fool. Only now at the end do you understand.
Get behind me, old woman. I remember BMG Rootkit. I remember DIVX. I remember MiniDisc. I'm aware of the early form of the RIAA going around Tin Pan Alley (et al.) making sure that musicians weren't using illegally obtained sheet music.
I just realized three of those things were Sony.
I'm sure there was an earlier form of branding cattle, but right now it's our Modern Cyberpunk World.

RE: General Video Game Thread
To make up for the DB crash, and to assure that I don't hide behind it, the following conversation happened:
Me: Super Mutants in Fallout 76 is lazy. So stupid.
Faraday: Why is more canon stupid?
Me: Because reasons.
Faraday: Well it's their property.
Me: It's stupid reasons.
Faraday: O...kay? I mean I respectfully disagree, but—
Me: STOP THE STUPID!
(images of people backing away slowly from the frothing person)--
That said, game companies need to realize that a lot of very skilled nerds play their games, and to stop trying to pull bullshit like spyware on us.
Holy crap, Kerbal is on this list? What the hell, goofy indie darlings? The rest of these people I expected to be amoral, but Kerbal?
My life is a lie.

RE: Respecs.
It's kind of like when people on a historical game ask for historical accuracy. There has to be a balance. Too much and everybody's dying of dysentery on the Oregon Trail.

RE: M&M 3E Discussion: Power Levels
The last M&M game I tried I was told that if I didn’t use the PL caps I was not building a character correctly. As this is not something I read in the book chargen, I felt very out of place and eventually gave up even getting on the grid. M&M chargen is not easy for newbs.
Otherwise I’d say that you either limit PL harshly, or you set each event at a PL and let people of that PL or two lower get involved. That is, if your “within 2” rule is something you feel confident about.

RE: Respecs.
I’m with @faraday: I want the world the character exsists in to be consistent and natural for its internal rules. Respecs and XP catch-up mechanics break this.
On the original Darkwater, because there was XP catch-up we had to have respecs, else people coming in would be able to minmax while the older characters could not. Most people were responsible with it, but it made for a difficult time all around.

RE: RL Anger
Work is making us all take training in something called “The R Effect”, which is mostly personality management (dangerously close to double talk, honestly, but has some solid ideas so I’ll at least try).
At occasional points the video has an interactive bit where it asks “what do you think”, and I feel it’s trying to get you to respond in a certain way out of shame, to help the conditioning.
(Note, I don’t think all work-mandated conditioning is bad. Most of it, yes, but not all. Acceptance conditioning I can go with.)
Well at one point the talking suit says, “Do you promise to do <x>, to make it part of your life, to do your very best.” Of course I answered no, because I’m not going to promise to anything.
And I swear, the guy pulled a tangent out to say why I was wrong.
Well fuck you, inventor of this behavioral life method, for asking me personal questions then chiding me for them. Fuck. You.
Ironically, the promise was to take “blame, complain, deny” out of my life, and the thing he said was bad and “you can look up the studies for yourself” was about venting. I didn’t say I wouldn’t try to not vent, venting was never even brought up! I said I wouldn’t promise to excise your negative meme bullshit from my soul, but you can bet I’m venting now you feckless no-chinned MBA twat.

Fallout 76 looks like it will be including Super Mutants. In Virginia. When they are being created. On the west coast.
Super lazy, Bethesda.

RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff
I walked 24 miles in the past 4 days.
Okay, so my left hip and left arch are killing me, and walking 3 miles a day in 80 degree heat may not have been the smartest idea, but I am not at all surprised at how much higher quality my sleep has been.
On the other hand, my left leg and foot aches in a way that I'm not looking forward to dealing with in dress shoes.

RE: Respecs.
How do you feel about allowing/offering respecs
I'm okay if people want to mulligan chargen within a reasonable time.
Other than that, no respecs. Play to find out what happens.

RE: Rosters: To PB or Not To PB?
@cobaltasaurus said in Rosters: To PB or Not To PB?:
If you're looking at a game with roster characters, and decide to go with a roster. Does their already having a PB chosen have a positive or negative impact on your choice? Does it matter if you know you can change the PB once you're approved if you don't like the one that's there already?
Positive: It would give me a far better idea what that character is supposed to be about.
Negative: Nnnngh not another russian model/'roided body builder telling me that the character is supposed to be 'swole/hot'.
Mostly the positive, though.

@darc said in Experienced Tiers or How much is too much?:
There's paraphrasing, and there's what you just did there.
And yet it appears to me that you're both correct.
This.
To reply more directly to Darc again, I did say “inform”, a word used to show knowledge that the system is not black and white. I perhaps should have said that I felt forced, not am forced, and if you read into it further the reason for this is because of those I’m playing with decided for a higher tier, not because the tier system itself. I do believe that I also said that while I dislike tiers, I find FH and SF’s to make sense.
I still don’t like them, but hell, I don’t like Donald Trump as president. It’s up to me to find ways to deal with difficult situation.
You know, adult.
In a more general commentary, this is a reason that I have grown to dislike the “you didn’t read what I said” responses. They are too easy to get lost in the minutiae of words that have meaning, and the oppositions between meaning and connotation, and nerds being nerds, etc. Bleh. No thank you.

RE: Experienced Tiers or How much is too much?
It's mostly that I'm prepared at any moment to be slammed down for my concept because someone I don't know doesn't like it. Getting up the energy to fight though this learned behavior is often too much for me.
Sometimes—rarely—that someone I don't know tells me what they do like about the app so I can focus on that and get it done.
Most of the time I'm over-thinking it.

(That's a trick question. The answer is never. I have never been excited about anyone's WoD chargen.)
Even your own? That's some real self-loathing shit right there.
I like my own chargen just fine, but not the hoops that everyone but @Cobaltasaurus has made people go through to get approved. I've also been recently told that my chargen is "confusing". My gut reaction to that is people are "idiots", and that if the Reach-style chargen that has been going around lately is what people prefer, then I would ask them to tell me where on the doll Mushing has touched them.
Really it's mostly that I have problems coming up with a concept that part of my mind instantly sabotages because I've become jaded through too many years in this hobby.
I'm not interested in one more moment of making a character for you, staff. I want to make a character for me, and that means finding out what this character is about during play.

Claim: FALSE
Origins: The collection of labored and overwrought similes and metaphors included in the example quoted above are an instance of [deliberate attempts at bad writing], not [collections of bad student writing]. These entries were all taken from the Washington Post‘s long-running “Style Invitational“ feature, which twice (in 1995 and again in 1999) invited readers to come up with and submit “lame” and “painfully bad” analogies.

RE: Experienced Tiers or How much is too much?
Nope, it's SF. Paraphrased from the game: Tiers will inform who can do what.
Yeah, so, if I want to do what my friends are, I'm forced into it.
I'm not excited about this, but then when I have I been excited about anyone's WoD chargen?
(That's a trick question. The answer is never. I have never been excited about anyone's WoD chargen.)

RE: Experienced Tiers or How much is too much?
Fair.
I'm currently creating a character on a game far, far higher power than I'm comfortable with because this is what people around me are playing. I am angsting (loudly; sorry everyone around me) that I will not be able to justify this to the gatekeepers and therefore be asked to not play with those people around me.
So FH and SF may be the only two tier systems I've encountered that make a systematic difference. In my world, that's a justification to use them.
