    • RE: Table-top gadgets

I cannot think of a single tool that beats the tactile feel of dice, and a sheet of paper to doodle on, preferably with character stats on it. I prefer, myself, to sit at a table with straight-backed chairs, and a BattleMat™ when appropriate.

Have someone write a log. Here are the logs of one of our campaigns. Four years. One giant rabbit hole. AD&D 2nd Edition.

Er, sorry, I have to go read all of these right now.

Options can be a bad thing if they distract from the gameplay or give an advantage that some might consider unfair, both things others have offered some concern over. This is normal. I wouldn’t want the rules to change my character or force me into unwelcome gameplay either.

      What's 'unwelcome' is relative though.

This is why I said, "me" and "my" and "some". I fucking swear, sometimes I think people pick on things they don't like without realizing that they are not adding anything.

Seriously, "it depends" is a tautology. It's cliché. I'm going to ride @surreality into the weeds on this too, because it's argumentative without looking to solve an issue. So is "what works for some doesn't work for others." No kidding? Here, let me write that down in my journal. Clue Discovered: Nobody is the same.

Maybe what you meant to say was, "What do you consider unwelcome gameplay?" There. That's searching for information instead of making overall meaningless hand-waving toward our desire to be non-confrontational yet still make judgements against people's viewpoints.

      Sheesh.

However, I don’t see anything unfair so far and I’d be surprised if anyone was notably inconvenienced, tho it’s hard to comment on an incomplete system. I doubt it will end up game breaking, but if so then I expect to hear reviews about it here.

@thenomain No they really do not.

Tell that to the Harry Potter game I'm tweaking CoD code for. In order to treat the setting with respect, something needs to change.

You have your own opinion, but it's...well, tangenting this thread. I don't mind this, but you seem to want this discussion to split. I tried to bring it back home, and you're getting kind of snippy about it. So if you want to discuss this, fine. If you want it in a different thread, now is the perfect time to reply to a post as a quote in an entirely different thread. (I've done that my fair share of times.) If not, don't worry about it.

      --

edit: I just remembered the historical books that White Wolf/Onyx Path came out with. I cannot imagine almost any of them being possible without system tweaks. Vampire 1980s and Mage 1920s maybe being the exceptions. I don't think Mage Noir had anything but a few optional add-ons. The Vampire Chrome tweaks were brilliantly funny.

Alternate settings often require alternate rules, so the rulesets people want to engage in are important to a discussion about alternate settings.

      @coin

I wish we had better tools for doing that.

I believe that having better tools for something makes a system more likely to be adopted. Tho if players want to do something a certain way, there's almost no amount of coding that can be done to encourage or discourage it.

This was the first Christmas I can remember without my older sister. My brother-in-law was doing well, but muted, and occasionally shaken.

And let me tell you all through watching it happen: No parent should ever have to bury their child. If any of you have ever had to, I give you my deepest sympathy.

      Fuck. Cancer.

As a throw-out line, I remember when players decided to do things all on their own. Give a class full of artists a blank canvas and a goal and stand back.

Sometimes stand far back with a camera to film the drama, but hey.

I want to say that this habit was beaten out of them by staff for various reasons, but it also probably has a lot to do that we don't have the energy we used to. Kudos to those who do, but I get worn down by work on a regular basis and by the time I'm sitting here I don't want to worry about all the little things we worry about on Soapbox. Sometimes I want to sit down and see what comes of the play.

I can be pretty good at self-motivation when I'm not afraid of the consequences.

Knowing that limit is one of the few true talents of making this hobby work. Congratulations on somehow being both understanding and reasonable. If you can teach this skill to those willing to learn, you'd probably do quite a bit of good.

      Backpack: $9.99
      Shipping: $8.95

      Is this backpack that good?

(edit: the leather backpack of holding is $70 right now, too, which if it's even halfway decent leather is a good deal. Most leather is more 'pressboard' of leather, and if the Rolltop Backpack of Holding is the same quality as a Jansport then $10 is pretty much what it's worth. $10 shipping tho? Dear god!)

(edit edit: More complains than compliments about the Adventurer's Leather Backpack of Holding. Bah!)
