I was always reading. But I think what really sealed the deal was when my aunt got me a box set of PC games from the Might and Magic series when I was in 5th. Done.

My hypothesis is there is a large group of players that frequent WoD games that really just want a blended fantasy game set in modern/near modern time with a large player base and some guidelines.

RE: The Dark Side of online Role-Playing
Wooooow wtf is happening here. Nothing @buttercup put up there is that radical? And yeah like, he doesn't want his impressionable kid communicating with internet strangers behind closed doors so the computer is in a public space. That's not wild.

RE: Incentives for Doom
I love playing short-term characters that have a set expiration date. My last game, I played several characters that either died because they had terrible luck or because they were bad guys and the end was coming as the plot was wrapping. Totally worthwhile. An XP incentive would be cool, but isn't really necessary for the people who already like this kind of RP.

RE: Character 'types'
Yeah, I absolutely have some types. I mostly play men with the occasional woman thrown in over a period of years.
- Dour and grumpy but a good guy.
- Very clearly a good guy-good guy.
- Eccentric and possibly morally ambiguous.
- Strong-willed and usually reasonable woman.

RE: Arx: @clues
@oldfrightful I'm pretty sure becoming one/fighting one/obtaining an army of them would solve a lot of my problems.

RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff
@Quinn Man, I felt myself just totally stop while breathing this. I'm so glad she's okay. So sorry you had to experience that.

RE: Arx: @clues
@lithium When I started playing last year, I had some real moments of "ugh all the people know more than me" feels.
Now, if one of my characters died tomorrow .. I would go with a much more focused OC concept with a short list of goals.
Once I got done sniffling.
Anyway, the point I'm getting at is 100s of clues is eh. It's not better or worse than having 30. And you tend to gradually accumulate them.

RE: The Work Thread
I'm growing exhausted and tired at work where it feels like no amount of prep that I do the day before prepares me for the next day because that slack I created for myself just gets sucked up taking care of things in other places of the building.

You are not going to abuse the word 'says/said'.
There's so much good advice in this thread, thank you everyone! This in particular really stood out to me. I'd been wondering lately if I was overusing that and had started to try and diversify things a bit, but it's interesting to see the take that it really can't be. And that's something I hadn't thought of, that we're so used to seeing it our eyes just move along to the next thing.
I'm a pretty concise poser myself, anything beyond 8-12 lines feels like it's too much. I try to avoid using excessive wording and focus on making what I'm writing impactful or at least being worthy of some kind of response from the people I'm playing with. I don't know that I manage it with every pose, but it's a goal.
Along the line of sharing writing techniques, I know someone who has really great timing with throwing out one liners. I've never been in a scene where they did it and had it derail or stop what we were doing. Instead it sort of... reset what was going on, framed it into a narrower focus and helped push things along.
