@Salty-Secrets said in Active Games Of The Now?:

If you want a list of games by population there's always the mudstats directory.

Does it actually update anymore? I used this and valued it for a long time, and the charts for the games listed are still nice, but last time I checked there as nobody really sticking new games on there anymore, at least not with any regularity. Like, there are two reasonably active BSG games right now, both of which have been running for going on a year, but I don't see either Orion or BSU listed. I don't think Arx is listed and it comes up in every "activity" conversation. Etc.

I'd say 9 times out of 10 when something shitty happens on a game, it is discussed. Maybe not too or with staff but it's talked about.

And this means when there - inevitably about these repeat-offenders - are complaints, stories will come pouring out of the woodwork about So and So Incident that was never reported and/or only talked about in a different RP circle than the one the other incidents were talked about in. Put these motherfuckers on blast, and you'll find it was almost never just that one innocent time when the poor lamb meant no harm, really.

@Gilette said in How to Change MUing:

@AlexRaymond -- I actually think it is that, that there are still a lot of people who might log in a bit every week but don't really play. And, in my mind, they don't qualify as active MUers.

Maybe this isn't what you're trying to say, but the implicit attitude of YOU MUST BE ACTIVE AT ALL TIMES AND RP EVERY NIGHT FOR 6 HOUR SCENES is part of what drives more casual players out of the hobby. I don't think somebody who RPs a couple times a week is inactive at all. I think it's a reasonable level of activity and the hobby overall would be healthier if it was encouraged as a desirable median.

I'm all about slow-burn, and frankly I tend to take someone wanting to go ALL IN AFTER ONE SCENE as a sign I should pull back from that character as potential romantic RP. We're just clearly going to want different things out of it and would both end up frustrated.

Props to @Glitch and @EmmahSue for their work on this, and MAJOR props to @Arkandel for stepping up to take it. There were a few possibilities that filled me with dread. @Arkandel was not among them.

I have no idea what that thing @WTFE posted is.

@Rook said in How to Change MUing:

The entire MU community feels very 'passive' lately.

Human beings are passive. I do think it's gotten worse over the years, as the way we entertain ourselves has become more tailored to that passivity (so fighting past it seems less normal). I agree that it's deeply frustrating and causes a lot of the issues we see on MUs, I just don't want to talk about it as a 'MU problem.' At the end of the day, every player has to take a certain amount of ownership for their own fun. It's what I try to do, at least. And sometimes owning my own fun is saying 'This game just isn't for me, I should play somewhere else', but I still feel like that's taking ownership and not expecting entertainment delivered to me.

I definitely agree with some of the ideas posted and they're things I look for in games. I vastly prefer single-faction, PvE environments, and part of that is the way it promotes interactivity and ease of finding RP partners. I'll also echo @Arkandel in saying I think Arx's randomscene code does a really good job of giving people a reason to get out and RP with newbies/people they maybe haven't interacted with.

    • RE: Star Trek Theme/Setting Discussion

Anomaly and Gamma One were pretty popular in their day. They had the +report problem, which I will join the masses in not liking, but I don't think a single ship/station Trek setting with an NPC Captain is a hard sell at all. Particularly if you steer it far, far away from RP-by-report and focus on the episodic adventure Trek does so well.

Games are hard. Starting a game is hard. There's nothing about Star Trek that makes it particularly hard, though, and certain things that I think lend themselves quite well to a persistent environment if the STs focus on those things.

Edit: Or you could set a game where you play the Maquis. Smaller crews, numberous ships.

There actually was a 'MaquisMUSH' back in the early 00's. It was only open for a few months but was a lot of fun while it lasted.

MaquisMUSH set during the Dominion War (where Eddington's whole thing either never happened or happened very differently) seems like a very fun campaign as a small, hyper-focused game.

@surreality said in Which canon property/setting would be good for a MU* ?:

If I had a nickel for every time somebody told me to 'just use WoD or don't do it' -- which is a system I think is actually crap-awful for MU -- I could have paid all of my hosting bills for the entire time I was doing dev.

I actively avoid these games because I'm disinterested in WoD as a setting and very disinterested in buying 2 (or more - and yes I know I can pirate these easily but, ethics aside, it's still a lot of reading theme and setting material I am actively disinterested in) RPG books I will never use for any other purpose other than playing a game I do not know if I will like or not.

I don't say this to be contrary, I am well aware that WoD is a very popular genre in MUs and doing a game in it will get you a ready-made audience. But I am part of another audience and I don't think I'm alone, so I'm presenting the opposing point. I feel like it's less about catering to The Audience, and more about catering to an easily-corralled audience, rather than one that's more diffuse and less focused.

@Ganymede said in POLL: Super Hero MU Gut Check:

Take Iceman. He doesn't have super strength, but he could make ice weapons, so maybe he has some sort of Elemental melee weapon available that has medium penetration and damage. And for his ice blasts, again, you could use a ranged weapon called "Blast."

I played a pyrokinetic on X-Factor and that was a REALLY easy thing for the combat system to ape. And my custom flame weapon amused the hell out of me, just going to admit that. I think it helped that the characters were supposed to have rather street-level powers, so you didn't really have Superman/Xavier-level folks running around. Admittedly, I did feel there were balance issues with powers that were harder to quantify, but I feel like those would've actually been worse, not better, in something where you were just dealing with descriptive traits. I appreciated having a dice framework at all.

Note what is missing from this list: trying to stir up a good old-fashioned MSB/WORA/SWOFA/whatever curb stomp. Because the stomp could very well be yours if you keep this nonsense up.

But if he stops, we'll have one less reason to drink. 😞

I don't know if you're talking about my attitude or theirs.

Oh, theirs. Sorry, thought that would be obvious, but if I were you I'd also be freaked.

But the most recent icing on the cake was yesterday when I offhandedly mentioned to my mother in the natural course of a conversation how I'm not comfortable living in the same house as guns. Especially with people who are drunk a lot (I live with my younger, also 45-voting sister who wants to get a gun... or already got one, I don't really want to know). Later, my mom finds a poster with a gun on it that says 'Keep Calm and Carry' and she laughs about how my sister should get it because I don't like guns.

    • RE: Auspice Needs To Move!

I find the Sunbelt pretty livable (I'm in Phoenix atm). It's growing and in the cities, at least, there're pretty decent job prospects. The reasonable cost of living is what's kept me here (might be able to buy a house next year, woo and such!)

Good luck, @Auspice ! I've been in a situation where I just needed to pick up and fucking leave where I was at and make something new somewhere else. I had family to support me, so it wasn't horrendous, but when you don't have that kind of cushion it's a bitch making huge changes like this. I hope every little bit helps.

I wouldn't say it's -hard- to figure out, but there's a bunch of commands you'll be oblivious of until someone tells you about them because there's not much help file documentation.

This is about right. I was able to PLAY Arx right out of the gate without any issues/command learning, but I feel like I stumble over something I was ignorantly unaware of every week. None of the more complex systems are necessary to just get into RP, tho.

I drink soda with real sugar. I know its bad for me stil, but maybe not as bad! I am trying to cut back. But soda seems to help my headache and that is part of the problem. Maybe I should go get an ice coffee.

I've successfully cut soda out of my diet...except for the occasional Coke with 4realz sugar. There's a hole-in-wall taqueria by my apartment which sells it and it is one of life's pleasures. I think Costco stocks real sugar soda, too.
