@Sunny I keep picturing this scene where the dancer is doing high leg kicks in a saloon girl dress at the gate to occupy the guards who are scratching their heads wondering wtf just happened, while the 3 werewolves abscond with the truck on their backs, will powering through death rage so they don't break anything as they tip toe out of the industrial parking lot.

As an aside, this sort of scene is why I think a game based on Buffy/Todd and the Book of Pure Evil (kiiiiiind of NSFW, haha) would just be so much goddamn fun.

If I just charge ahead, I ruin their fun.

If I have to sit through their planning and scheming? They ruin my fun.

So beyond the obvious point of alternating, sometimes letting them have fun, and sometimes letting me have fun. And me taking the backseat and pulling back on the loud and bright shit. Any suggestions for how to handle that?

Mix it up a little. If you're the hammer, let them help you decide where the nails are. That sounds like peanut butter and chocolate to me!

This isn't always the easiest thing, but I've found nine times out of ten actually asking the person to stop, mostly politely but allowing the slightest hint of irritation to leak into your voice, is enough to make most fuckers really stop checking their phones. It's miraculous. Sometimes they even apologize.

EDIT: Rereading the above I think that might have come off a little sarcastic, but that's not at all how I mean it. I really do get how hard it is to confront people for being obnoxious/breaking social contracts, but it's seriously almost always worth it.

      @Catsmeow

Hain't nothin' wrong with never having heard of Welcome to Nightvale before!

...unless you don't rectify that asap. Then you're sad and you make me sad.

Sounds about right, timeframe-wise! I wasn't around for the actual closure either, I just mean that things had slowed down considerably, from what I gathered.

Oh snap! He was...in the high school group? Half-demon with visions, and basically turned into a giant iguana? I came in when things were more or less winding down at Devilshire, unfortunately.

      Oldies:
Silver Ranger (and a few minor knock-off OCs) @ Heroes & Villians
Hellboy @ The Endless City (I think it was called?)
      Dain @ The Reach
      Geoffrey @ Devilshire
Eddie Laramie and then his little bro Lucas @ Banyan Tree (and the successor set in Savannah)
Jecht @ FFMUX (a few times, in the murky past)
      Venom @ Project Infinity, briefly.
Samael (Sabbat gargoyle) @ City of Hope (and at the knock-off COH for a bit, whatever it was called)
      Gaston/Valenzo/Thomas @ Arx

I would be all for a Buffyverse game. DO IT!

For darker, grittier urban fantasy, "John Dies at the End" is pretty great.

I'll second this pretty strongly. John Dies at the End is...is...

The man walked past me and stopped, observing the blood running down my neck.
"Your injury. Let us tend to it." He looked out through the open doorway and silently gestured to someone out there. "Our world," he said, "is far more advanced than yours. For reasons you'll understand shortly."

A thin, bony, naked woman entered the room, carrying two small, white kittens. She sat one of the fluffy cats in my lap and stuffed the other down my shirt. She turned and left.
"There," said the large man. "The kittens will make your sad go away.”

...there are no words. They should have sent a poet.

I'd also recommend War for the Oaks by Emma Bull, anything by Caitlin R. Kiernan (Daughter of Hounds is probably closest to the "urban fantasy" mold), The Magicians by Lev Grossman, and the So You Want To Be A Wizard series by Diane Duane.
