Shadowrun was published in 1989.

Netrunner was published in 1996.

It is true that the Cyberpunk RPG came out first (in 1988), but Cyberpunk is separate from Netrunner even though they are based in the same setting. Also, Netrunner is based on CP2020 (the 1990 edition) not the original 1998 edition.

@Runescryer California is probably better. It's open to more plot ideas and character concepts.

Oddly enough you also see a whole lot less special snowflake crap in spite of the fact that you have a whole lot more license to be a special snowflake; it's paradoxical, almost

Tangential to the question at hand, but I just figured I'd toss out there that doing a full-blown chargen system in Ares is a big undertaking, but just adding something to record stats in the web portal is trivial. You could adapt the web goals tutorial pretty easily for that and just make it a staff-only command to edit the list of stats.

To the original point - it depends on the game, and how much friction is caused by having to figure out die pools and such manually. On some games it works fine. On others it would be a dealbreaker.

Back on the original subject, there is, regrettably, no "perfect" Star Wars game system, but D6 got as close to the feel of the Star Wars galaxy as any system ever has to date, and, even with its foibles, is still the most accessible outside of MUSHing, and the easiest to learn.

FFG is almost as good, but has its own issues; I've only ever seen one FFG Star Wars MUSH come to fruition, and it died in less than a year (it was a niche sort of game, admittedly, or it might've lasted longer). A second, earlier game never got off the ground; the creator got disenchanted with the system a few months later, and tried to solicit interest in making it a SWSE game instead, but got no bites. The system code that was used in the first game was apparently very tricky, and was never quite in tune with the on-paper game system, though it got close. I think I heard that it was built from a GeneSys system for a different MUSH, which works just slightly differently than the FFG Star Wars system.

I once had a particularly hostile work boss tell me that I "made things difficult for myself" like I had some kind of magical way to control my brain chemistry.

@Apollonius Belatedly, my attempt to make a new Fading Suns game got to the point of being given full access to the code from previous games, renting a server for a year and building most of the grid along with writing tens of thousands of words of theme files. I even made some neat map graphics and similar.

But I also suffer from chronic severe depression and the person who volunteered to help with some of their (awesome) code had other priorities. So it never got anywhere, mostly for the first reason. I can certainly help out with projects but not head them given I am 100% guaranteed to burn out if I try that.

Mmm, at the risk of re-awakening this... I don't look at MSB very often, so I didn't see this thread before; but from the specific details given on here, especially in certain of the earliest posts, I'm 98% sure this is the person who afflicted us a few years ago on Game of Bones. Made ridiculous overblown male concepts that smashed together various extravagant and incompatible bits of theme, broke the spirit of that very laissez-faire MU*'s minimal rules, then the minute he was gently asked if he could maybe not do that so much, please, he vandalised the game wiki and ran away issuing a stream of personal threats based on his vaunted IT skills.

Apparently he just recurs every so often. Blah.

My preference in general is for competing factions within a larger war. I generally prefer the politics to be Character vs Character and the combat to be Character vs Environment. I think that this generally means that there are fewer CvC deaths, which tend to be the ones that cause the most disgruntlement and calls of favoritism (you’re going to get disgruntlement and calls of favoritism even if the characters are just competing over a seat on a bench).

Almost everything you said here went right over my head. Game idea doesn't appeal to me at all, though.
