Marvel: 1963

Apparently it's because when I used, my ISP is a ISV6, which I guess is something the game has had trouble trying to deal with.
At least that's what I was told when I logged on last night.
-
@Monogram IPv6. It's not that the game has trouble trying to deal with it (Hi, I'm Theorem), but that something between you and our server was having issues connecting via IPv6. I have no idea why -- its completely beyond the scope of anything we can actually address.
As it happens, it isn't that DNS was failing, but "portent.genesismuds.com" has two addresses in its record, A (IPv4 address) and AAAA (IPv6 address). Since your new network seems to prefer to be IPv6, it returned 2607:fc88:100:9::8.
For some reason you couldn't connect to us via IPv6. I have no idea why: I've never quite gotten around to using IPv6 in real life. Things get interesting from here, though, as I can access it via IPv6 address fine from my machine (and from my work network, too)-- so its nothing wrong with the server itself, I surmise. There's just something borked between you and our host.
That said, we're going to be changing the address in our ads to 'marvel.chrysalis.me' which just advertises the IPv4 address just in case this is an issue for anyone else. It should make it all just a non-issue.
Thanks for helping investigate.

We're back up after Genesismuds maintenance.

Just posted to Announcements:
Hey folks. After talking it over, staff has decided to make a small change to the game. We will now accept DC characters as well as those of other comic companies. Okay, maybe not so small. There's a couple catches though.
Just like with Marvel, some characters will be banned. We're not making up a list and will take it on a case by case basis. Others will be restricted.
Just like with Marvel, characters will need to fit into the 1964 era and the game's theme.
Also, just like with Marvel, characters will need to fit into the Marvel universe. Yes, you heard that right. We're not merging universes. There's no Gotham and never has been a Gotham. Batman will need to fit into NYC somehow. Oa will need to deal with the Shi'ar Empire. And power levels will need to be scaled to Marvel which, generally, is lower than than of DC. Obviously, in a lot of cases, this will need consultation with staff but we'll be happy to do that with you. We think this will add a lot of possibilities to the game and believe the effort will be worth it.
Lastly, just as an FYI, no staffer is going to be apping a non-Marvel character for 2 weeks from today. First choice is all yours.

Because nothing says "Marvel 1963' like a game set in 1964 that includes Batman, Superman and Wonderwoman.
-
@Nein I can't argue the Marvel/DC crossover, but hey, time moves forward, right?
-
Games grow and change. Those that don't stagnate and die. It's closing in on a year and we decided the players would benefit from opening the game up to other characters while still keeping the Marvel setting and single city grid to keep RP concentrated in one place.
Just think of us as (Marvel: 1963)+.

So far MOST players have been welcoming to the change, with a few being...fairly rude about it to the new DC characters. That is fine, though. As someone coming in as a DC character it just shows me who to avoid, and who is nice. It's cool they labeled themselves so easily right off the bat.
But yeah, I am excited about the addition, and the majority of people have been cool about it. I have had some folks reaching out to me immediatly for character hooks and future rp plans!
-
@toreadorfool Why on earth would people be rude to players for making a choice staff made available?
Ah, humans.
-
Right? They have mainly been incredibly vocal about their dislike to the change and to the new characters coming in, which is hard not to take personally. XD
BUT as I said...most people have been rad, and I reccomend giving the game a try, especially if the idea of DC interests.

To spark interest on DC Rebirth I proposed this change for our game a month or so ago and it was met with very strong resistance by my players. I was actually kind of shocked.

Well, I can see the point of protecting the thematic consistency of a game (even though I will never understand comic book MU* where the same character coexists with other versions of themselves from different eras). Adding Superman to a Marvel Universe game is kinda weird I guess.
-
Eh. It SEEMS like DC has more alien races running around earth routinely.

You won't get an argument from me. Honestly, I wouldn't mind banning him altogether but that's not going to happen. Some characters will fit in pretty seamlessly. Pretty much any street level character is simple. We're going to need to work with players for some though. Any alien, for instance including members of the Lantern Corp. But it's been made clear that everyone needs to fit into the game's theme and the Marvel universe so everyone knows what they're getting and that some work might need to be done.
As for the idiots, yeah. Best to ignore them altogether.
-
@TNP I kinda admire superhero MU* players for their flexibility. I've spent so much time on games trying really hard to maintain internal consistency (for example there was a big debate on a fantasy MU* lately asking if concrete has been invented IC or not) that just being able to add a bunch of alien races overnight without the game exploding with questions seems amazing to me. Not to mention people can interact with different versions of the freakin' same person and not just go 'well, you know what, fuck this. I'm gonna go home and watch TV' is downright admirable.
-
@Arkandel Maybe it has something to do with the fact that Comic Books tend to stretch the bounds of their own canon far, far more than most fantasy settings do:
SuperMechaWolf? Oh, he didn't die, well not really. The first time his head was crushed, that was a clone put in place by Dr. Defenstro. The second time, he was resurrected by the Crystal People, but it turned out that was another clone and that all along he was in Dr. Defenstro's underground dungeon. Then he broke out and FINALLY met up with his one true love, WOMAN-WOMAN, and got shot with a Apollyonite bullet, which killed him...
...but then in "Shadows of the Underpass IV" it shows how he went through hell, then heaven, and was given a second chance by God provided that he come back and focus on fighting racial injustice.

Personally, mixing Marvel/DC just waters down both to me. Feels wrong-fun to me, and I've honestly never seen a particularly well-done scene with say Batman/Spider-Man (fucking wrote superman here, whoops) together.
Doing both in 'one universe' just seems super fanservice-y/"we need players".
I prefer single universe games, but I also recognize I'm in the minority, because the two single-uni games, DC Rebirth and Marvel Reborn are dead as fuck.

More players are always nice (well, usually) but I wouldn't say we need them. Even at this hour, we have 27 unique logins. We wanted to open up additional popular character to the players. We didn't, though, want to do some 'dimensional crisis' thing where suddenly the DC universe phases in, overlaps, or whatnot. They've just always been part of Marvel.
I don't think I've ever seen that done and who knows, it might not work. But we'll find out and if it doesn't, we'll deal with it.

Does that have to do with the fact that one is Marvel and one is DC, or the fact that the mood and atmosphere of these two characters could not be more diametrically opposed? I can imagine a lot of people who would just feel weird in an entirely in-Marvel scene cohabiting with your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

I prefer Marvel only (but voted yes on this change; but the reason I prefer Marvel only is I kinda hate DC. Die, Superman, Die.), but I also want to listen to people. While we've had a couple players not happy with it, we've had more happy, and if that makes it fanservicey, then I plead guilty. We've had a few new people come by recently who just can't seem to find a character they want to play and don't want to do an OC. That's unfortunate.

Universe Unlimited had the plus of having mixed the two universes very well. I mean, some things were ignored and caused some continuity/logical problems, but I did sit in there and fix some of those, at one point, at least to most people's satisfaction.
I think if you make a mixed game you have to accept two things: 1) you'll disappoint some people with any changes you make to fill in gaps or explain discrepancies; and 2) you'll have to shift the ambience and feel of both, if they're very different, until they can cohabitate.
For example, in the Marvel universe, mutants suffer a lot of persecution (let's ignore the fact that Average Joe and Jane seem to have a special radar and are always able to tell when someone is a mutant, and thus worthy of persectuion, and when they aren't, and thus worthy of trust because superheroes). Meanwhile, in DC, most metahumans (many of which are essentially 'DC's mutants' since it's basically just 'born with these powers randomly') are not.
So you pick one. Since Marvel's is a much more integral and important part of a lot of characters, I usually favor using that.
Other things are just fun to mix and match and see what you can do!
Namor does not rule Atlantis. He rules Lemuria! His people are an off-shoot of Atlanteans that left Atlantis centuries ago. They have a wary truce with Aquaman and Atlantis.
The Kree are descended from ancient Kryptonian explorers. It explains their higher physical powers, probably diluted (maybe they once lived with a yellow sun, but it's been millennia since then). (And hey, their naming conventions are very similar!)
The Nova Corps was an attempt by the Guardians of the Universe to create a new intergalactic police force when [x thing with the Lanterns] happened, but they ended up separating from the Guardians and now operate on a different scale than the lanterns (or whatever).
Quicksilver's mutant power allows him access to the Speed Force. (So many people hate this idea, and I don't know why, or care.)
The Celestials are responsible for [name any number of weird fucking things in the DC Universe, including even the Anti-Monitor].
Galactus and Mogo are totes frenemies and Ego constantly feels left out.
