This has been an ongoing project as part of the bigger project, as a resource for folks newer to the hobby or just in general. @Auspice's poll inspires the post, in part, 'cause I'm a forgetful hag that forgets to post inquiries like this.

What terms can you think of that you've run across that are unique to the hobby? Any that have been particularly opaque? Any you've heard used a lot?

There's actually a reason for this -- some terms get used in different places in different ways, and that's pretty relevant. For instance, games I've played, sanctioning a player means punishment of some kind has been administered; in other RP communities, the same word means the character has been approved for play. That's a pretty huge difference that could easily trip people up.

This project may or may not be completely stupid, and I'm doing it either way and don't really care much if people think it's stupid. If you want to argue that, by all means, have at -- but I'm a lot more interested in what terms you think are useful or should be included on such a list (preferably with the definition you've associated with it, which is especially useful, since like the sanction example above, the different meanings can be included and if that unconfuses so much as half a dozen people from freaking out about a term with such contradictory meanings, well, it's not like I have other things to do with my time at the moment).

      Oh fucking well.

TS comes to mind. But basically tiny-everything is pretty unique to the hobby.

+jobs instead of tickets, which most people would identify from the real world?

The grid, referring to a game's built, described, interconnected world.

Dunno, this is a big project. You're probably better off sticking it on a wiki and let people add items then just curate occasionally... individual games have a ton of native terms, too. "Emote fighting" for example is what we used to call purely posed combat in a MUD I played, but I've not seen the term picked up anywhere else since.

Calling the game's setting the "theme" is something that still baffles me to this very day.

And boy do I wish it would be picked up elsewhere. I haven't had a good emote fight in... years. Way, way, way too many years. Dice ruin everything (while at the same time making things SO much easier).

Mav is one of the first that comes to mind.

using Charactername-p to refer to the player behind the character confused me at first.

I swear, I never figured out what 'mav' stands for. Mis-...something?

It's short for Maverick, a player from what back when (I think on AmberMUSH?) who was notorious for mis-paging/talking on the wrong channel. So the term got coined as a shortening of his name.

Right? I actually just recently came across a player who says he actually knew him. First time I'd actually run into someone who had.

It definitely came up on AmberMUSH first time I heard it back in '92, but it wasn't because of the guys name as far as I know, just the pose/page went 'Maverick' as in the definition of the word: an unorthodox or independent-minded person. It was then shortened to Mav. It went independent and not where intended.

I could be wrong but that's what I remember.

I can say with 100% certainty that it predates AmberMUSH. My extremely fallible memory wants to say it's from Islandia, but it could just as easily be from TinyHell or ChaosMUCK or LambdaMOO or any of a dozen or so other projects from the ~1990 era.

I do not support this usage of theme in regards to games, but I understand where it comes from.

"Maverick" was absolutely the guy's character name. I am almost positive Amber is right but it may have also been HellMOO. (edit: Cross-checking with Autumn's list, Islandia or Hell. Or Tim. I still think Hell.)

In modern parlance, this would be a "mistell" or a "mis", "tell" being the page-like command on...IRC-based systems like MMOs, I think? This is close enough to "mispage" that it hasn't been difficult for people to follow.

IIRC - Maverick's RL name was Jerry. As well, I have heard it was for his infamous paging of other people. However, this is also how urban legends start sooo...

I always heard that Mav was a girl and was knowing for mispaging TS poses on chans. Or anything on chans. Or pages to people.

Again, like @Catsmeow said, urban legends sorta tend to have different variations depending on who you talk to. That's just how I heard it years ago.

This may or may not change in the future.
