@icanbeyourmuse Alts ... Exactly this. Anything. There is no win, except enjoying story.
Someone could honestly be the Head of a Sept and go to war with their rival Sept. It would be short lived without support of other septs, especially those in your clan. It give Ulster some ground to. But we're not stopping it, staff is more focused on larger plot and threat to the Fifth of Kidare.
It's old school politics, have to go talk and rabble rouse others to your side. But Sept conflict and division could make things interesting.
We're looking at politics, much thanks to @Ganymede. Makes it more tangible, may make Sept conflict and clan vs clan raids a little more work. But our focus is making environment against Kidare to drive personal stories.
Lancelot has great story that is widely known for his character development and personal struggles that go against his presumed nature. Not for fighting giants with Galahad, not for being a de Orkney ( check the c map, hard to imagine someone from there like Lancelot), not for slaying the Dragon near King Pellinore during his visit their. If I ask a random stranger, he's a tramp and Guinevere is a harlot ... They all know love triangle, which is made better with Kay, Galahad, other knights and Arthur's take on this. Knowing it's happening letting it happen, dealing with it after. Redemption, redemption too late. It's effect on the kingdom and later judgement calls.
We have everyone mostly in court to deal with broader issues ... Raiders, famine, foods, bad political decisions, to make the right ones, to fund the right septs to give in times of need. To decide whether we invade Ulster, defend, what to do with Leinster, Munster, who to trust and not trust. Everytime Ronain is available, he's there to listen to what the court folks want or think on ideas. Like Munster now, the lean on his decision is 'no fer now'. There may be more tomorrow to come of this and other situations.
The politics should be more concrete going forward of that helps, but convincing your fellow players of your agenda goes miles now (actual politics and diplomacy, convincing the others your right or they're wrong).

I think everyone has moments of an amusing lack of awareness. It's human nature to not see how we are being perceived against our intention.
I hate when people apply their flaws to everyone and call it 'human nature'. Many people take pride in maintaining an acute degree of awareness with those around them. You're basically alleging that humans are hard-wired to be socially inept. I strongly disagree. I can certainly see how one might come to that conclusion if their main sources of interaction are via the internet, but not otherwise.
-
I'm not sure what this has to do with which Lords & Ladies games are out there which I hope we're all aware is the purpose of this thread. Perhaps awareness is not the same as consideration.
-
@pandora Are you asserting that you, or even most people do NOT have moments where they lack effective awareness of others, in any form?
-
@Misadventure Please don't twist my words, I seriously hate that. I never said that it never happens to people, I said it's not human nature to lack awareness, just like it's not human nature to speed in motor vehicles, even though a lot of people do it.
@Thenomain I'm well aware of my derail. I deeply apologize that it twisted your precious panties, I'll be sure to stay on topic from here.
-
You know what my pet peeve is? Double standards. If you're going to crow about being aware, be aware. This isn't the Hog Pit, yet you're acting like it is. You're disrespecting the thread topic to go on a personal vendetta. Sure, I've been there too, but this is the only second post in this thread where I haven't addressed the topic.
Somewhere in my head I do believe that trying to neg people needs addressed and pointed out, that's my failing. Prove me wrong and just swallow it whole and become constructive and on topic again. And be aware.
Edit: And don't twist my words. I really hate that. Hopefully you can understand what it's like when someone does.
-
@Thenomain Please post about your pet peeves somewhere more appropriate; you're creating a new derail in response to the original one you were just bitching about. Talk about double standards.
Back on topic, I was just speaking to someone about how it can be hard to get into the swing of things on political games, if you're coming in late, or playing a character that wasn't much of a mover or shaker before you took them off the roster, but your interests lie in the social arena. I'm not a shy player, but what sort of advice would you all give someone trying to get involved without having to poke/prod people OOCly?
-
It's mildly interesting to note how it takes people outside of the WoD-crowd to call Thenomain out on being a self-righteous, argumentative prick.
-
@Tempest I see people /constantly/ calling him out on the stuff he says. In and out of the WoD community. People just decide they like him despite that. I find him enjoyable to talk with.

I will call bullshit on this comment, being impatient and choosing the option with negligible gain and possible catastrophic loss rather than being patient is pretty much text book human nature.

I dunno man, the only problem there is other people deciding to shoot pages or tells while trying to keep it IC, and then can just very politely brush that off and focus entirely on IC communication. I find it a mixed bag, I've always been able to get involved in fresh characters, but it is more of a, 'how much effort do I want to invest in this' thing in reaching out to people nonstop to get involved. It's tricky in that I don't really want new players overwhelmed by people reaching out to them by hitting people over the head with incentives to do that, but if the burden rests entirely on new players to put themselves out there IC, a lot of people will just say 'fuck it, this is too much work' and slip off after they fail to gel.

Ignoring further attempts at derailment: I think a lot of it is the motivation and wherewithal to do ingratiating rp. Find some kind of hook, some sort of ego-stroking aspect of your character that you can use to get close to the people things hinge on, and get them hooked on rp with you.
I've had characters do in depth personal interviews for books/travel guides. I've had characters devise elaborate fortunes to tell for powerful people. Scherezade those mfers. Every rper is, at the core, a vain and undisciplined aspirant novelist.

I think it depends on the nature of the political game.
If the politics arise from resources scarcity, then being able to produce something that few others can gives you an automatic in. If the politics arise from attempting to climb social ladders and banging your way to the top, it can be a bit more difficult.
I'm not shy about asking around OOCly to get RP facilitated, so I'm not sure what the best solution would be for you. Maybe just hitting the streets, RPing where you can, and just RPing with enough people that what happens comes naturally.
-
An alternative to getting into rp on a political game, what I tend to do.
Recognize the politics. Make a char not directly involved; one that won't make a roll to determine some outcome for house or home or hearth. Those are fine, but what I do is different.
Take that character not directly involved, party sibling, one that just wants to raise crops, the one that is opposed to the meta conflict(s). Watch the politics and form a strong opinion for or against what is actually happening in news posts and gossip. Find someone and express your political views, argue if your opposed. Befriend if you agree, plot what to do about opposition. Try to have the non political type live in the face of the crazy politics going on, complain about the politics.
You'd be surprised where this can lead.
