So regarding shopping carts, does the USA not have the thing where the carts have a chain and lock to each other, meaning you can only remove one from the stack by putting in a coin, that is then released when the cart is returned and chained back up again?
Here leaving a cart (or shopping trolley to use local parlance) rolling around the car park means you are leaving a £1 coin in it and so people rarely do such things.

It's probably just that you're more likely to have a quarter in your pocket than a dollar coin. It's less about the expense itself and more about the idea of not wanting to waste money needlessly.

From an outcome-focused viewpoint, there's no difference between not returning your cart because you can't and not returning your cart because you don't want to, because the kid pulling carts has to go get it either way.
But if we're taking an outcome-based viewpoint, there's no difference between arguing for responsibility and being judgmental, because people feel judged either way.
All things being equal, you should return your carts. I hope people can remember that very few things in this world are actually equal.

to add a cherry on top to an already shitty day in my stressful life, I just got rear ended at a red light on my way home this evening. Thank god not hard enough to even deploy airbags (people haul ass on that road so i'm lucky). It was just enough to bend up my trunk, not just do in the bumper. Bumpers I can deal with. But this means my car is out for awhile once I get it fixed and I'm just struggling pretty hard with not crying my eyes out. I don't have the time. my head hurts. i work in a job that requires significant labor which means if this isn't just adrenaline then maybe i'll be out unpaid (i don't get pto at my job), and i'm not sure how to make my healthcare premium payment if i miss too much work (it takes 75 percent of my paycheck to insure my family, it's pretty much the only reason why I work, it's still cheaper than buying it on the market).
I don't know. today sucked.

I appreciate the sentiment but I'm not sure that's a good idea in America at this exact instant. I'll revisit my reluctance after more of my countrymen get vaccinated.

The threat of disease is a good reason not to do it, of course. I think the sentiment implies some sort of safety in doing so; e.g., if the shopping cart is filled with rabid wolverines, I will likely not go near it.
That said, I like the sentiment, and I'm supposed to be COVID-immune for another few months.
