      @too-old-for-this Yeah I'm waiting to see what the landlord's agent comes back with. We're pretty easy, and don't require them to fix stuff often and nothing that's not really critical, so hopefully it'll work out.

      The good news is I don't need the oven, frankly. Between a pressure cooker and an air fryer most common cooking tasks can be delegated.

        @arkandel Yeah, I have to say that my instant pot and air fryer see a lot more action these days than my stovetop. Until the kiddo wants pasta, anyways. XD

          I have a toaster oven that does convection and broils and bakes and toasts and very few things ever require me to use the oven in a range anymore thanks to that.

                    Seeing a look I'm obsessed with on a college kid and wanting so much to try it, but every time I think about the logistics of it I remember I'm in my forties.

                    Sigh.

                      @greenflashlight none harm in trying.

                      Nice thing about 40s plus (or any age honestly) is that you can try on anything you like. And if other people don't like it oh well.

                          @mietze A lot of it (or I should say, a lot of my obsession with it) is kind of founded on her looking like she basically has no pores. My complexion's actually probably the best it's ever been in my life, but porcelain skin is no longer in the cards for me. It's fine; I just sigh and wish for what might have been, had I known about the importance of hydration thirty years ago.

                            All the ways companies have of obfuscating nutritional information for no obvious reason.

                            A 500 grams yogurt container will be labeled with how many calories/protein/etc it has per 75 grams. The one next to it will also have a label with that information... but it's per 125 grams. So you can't even compare them to each other. Would it be too much to list the macros for the whole thing?

                            Bagged salad kits will tell you the macros including the dressing (which is inside each bag but in a sealed, separate container). Would it be too much to list that separately?

                            That's without even accounting for marketing or legal tricks such as advertising as 'low-carb' or 'light' products which are more sugar-packed than the average candy bar. And don't get me started on 'natural'.

                            <grumblegrumble>

                              @arkandel Dude, welcome to the fight. I've been struggling with weight issues for almost 30 years. Trying to find something that's TRULY 'low carb' without being replaced by empty sugars is like pulling teeth. And now they're getting dodgy with the 'keto-friendly' label too! I've been trying to find brands that are straight forward and simple with their ingredients and just stick to those... which means buying in bulk more often than not, since they go out of stock so quickly.

                                @too-old-for-this My usual issue is with the sides. Meat is easy - you buy it from a butcher or in a box and it's just... it. You buy a package containing 552 grams of chicken breast, well, that's what you get.

                                But I really don't like chopping and mixing veggies. Making sure some of it doesn't go bad before others do. Mixing it up and portioning it out. I'm happy to pay a premium to get a sensible salad out of a bag, I just want to know what the hell is in it. 🙂

                                  @arkandel Agreeeed. Especially with the dressings. A lot of the dressings that come with bagged salads are just crammed with empty calories and sugar. So I tend to discard them and use my own. But now the calorie count for the salad is off because the dressing is counted into the portion sizes.

                                  God help you if you do something like Hello Fresh but want to substitute some of the items. My son and I aren't a fan of cooked peppers, so I tend to swap them out for like.. snow peas or zucchini. But now I've changed the breakdown, so I can't tell what the increased carbs or sugars are.

                                    Frozen veggies, bruh. You just weigh and mix or eyeball and mix or just throw the whole bag in a skillet. Whatev.

                                        I used to do this. I probably should again. It was just... the variety was considerably less than what I can get out of a salad bag, since most of the frozen food ones have like a couple of veggies in there. How many carrots + broccoli + cauliflower variations can a guy eat! Maybe the next one has beans in it, plot twist!

                                          @arkandel I can't do mixed veggies frozen. All vegetables do not cook to proper consistency in the same time frame. So you could do a mix of brocc and green beans, the brocc is nice and steamed, has some body to the bite... and the green bean is wilty and mushy. Even peas and corn niblets don't cook at the same rate. And don't get me started on cooked carrots. They somehow never manage to taste like CARROTS.

                                            @too-old-for-this I agree. The key factors here (for me, and I assume for many of us) is convenience and time. Anything that takes me more than 5 minutes to get ready is too long, and 10+ minutes borders on comical.

                                            I need sides that I can fit within the window meat is getting cooked, while I'm looking after chores like setting the table, emptying the dishwasher, etc.

                                            It'll be easier once I'm bulking again since rice is far more convenient to buy and prepare.
