MUSH Marriages (IC)

Some marriages that were to happen, I never got to RP, as the games often died prior to that particular phase. Others happened but sort of idled out.

I think a danger is there sometimes, to have all RP focus on marriage and little else which can sometimes cut down on the variety of RP to be had.

My most memorable ones were two very unhappy marriages, though, on two different games. Which also brought all kinds of intense RP. Sometimes painful to play out, but yeah, in the end there were some great scenes. Pushing my characters to extremes.

Edit: The two games were both L&L genre, Tales of Daeren and Eternal Crusade.

On Firan, I got really lucky with the majority of my character's IC romances and marriages. I had a great story on one alt full of angsty drama that culminated in a nice romantic ending that went on until I left the game. The player and I were also great friends, a relationship that developed as we RP'd together. I came off roster married to a character who had a player who was a friend and when he rostered, the next player became a pal. Then I had a character who was involved with ANOTHER OOC friend - we were lucky enough to app both at once. Had a blast.

Then fucking Ana approved Custodious for him and I rostered immediately.

I've never had a character get married IC.

I've had situations where you might as well call it married, and as far as I and the other player know, they still are some 20 years later. So: A long time?

I've had a few. A couple of times I actually started the characters married, or in on-off relationships. The latest was over a RL year, but the characters couldn't actually get formally married for IC Lords & Ladies reasons, but it was a marriage as far as my character was concerned.

In non-roster games, which is the majority of games I've ever played, the main issue can be if the other player stops playing or idles out without closure. A couple of my IC marriages may have technically lasted RL years, but hardly count for that reason. In one case, it made my character pretty much unplayable, but that was a very specific situation. I still don't regret it, though. The RP and the character arc leading there wouldn't have been possible without it.

It's a little embarrassing with how many Lords and Ladies games and assorted marriage simulators I play, I've had very few actual marriages. A good handful of courtships and betrothals but so often the games fall through or players lose interest etc etc.

Maybe I have cooties. Or my hookers are just more popular <.<

I've only done it on Firan, where my experiences were universally negative - either the guy was a truly uninspiring RPer, or else he lived in Australia and was only available every other Tuesday from 9AM to 10AM.

I've wanted to play a totally dysfunctional marriage somewhere since forever, but either the game shuts down before the potentially dysfunctional boyfriend has a chance to become the dysfunctional husband, or else the person who's willing to app in as a married couple doesn't want to play on Game X because he prefers Setting Y.

I have had three.

One my husband died the morning after in a dramatic duel to the death? It was also a secret and and the ensuing baby drama was interesting and a massive dramatic train wreck. But married for the possibility of owning a town - was not a bad gamble on a L&L game. My sworn knights were super awesome afterwards too @Meg

Another I apped in already married with a very good friend and often rp buddy. It was really interesting to play out that long term relationship and gave them a very different sort of rapport since they were still crazy about each other. They got remarried in space after fighting aliens. Obnoxiously.

The third was actually also played with the same friend, but they apped in as my NPC hubs after a plotted kidnapping. It was a total arranged marriage and a mix of chilly and mutual respect. So my experience has been that it you like and trust the other player it can be loads of fun! But also don't get hitched the night before a duel. (Or do. Idk)

Do, if it is gonna make a great story. That was one of the best storylines I've played, and I have played a lot of really great, tense, dramatic, silly, fun storylines. Made only a little frustrating that we couldn't see it to its ultimate conclusion.

ETA: Also, even in the L&L type games, I couldn't quite ever make it to the marriage part. Could never drag someone down the aisle. I did get close to a marriage once, in that my guy bought an engagement ring before dying. That was fun to inflict on people. @Rainsodden

@meg That is true. The through line of it made for a lot of really fantastic rp that I had a ton of fun playing. It would have been nice to get a conclusion on it.

I amend my statement to - do get married the night before the duel to the death if you are game for some intense rp.

Serafine and Leta were my longest IC relationship and only 'marriage' in my RP history of ever. And yes, it counts.

Relationship RP is my jam, yo. I love getting swept up in a story of personal drama with high emotional stakes. Best time you can have for free, if you ask me. I've been married several times of varying lengths. They all ended mostly because of idles or burnouts...or game closures.

From my recollection, I've been a husband more often than a bride. I think I give good groom. I have written vows, picked rings, researched proper attire and been a part of some lovely ceremonies, both private and public.

I just love it. No matter how many times it turns tits up, I go back for more.

I'm sort of a stickler when it comes to this. I don't mind that kind of RP when it presents itself, but most times there's usually a particular group of friends who I do those kind of storylines with. In part because those friends are good players with creative storylines that don't allow the relationship to really go stale, but they're very stable and very sane. Which at times, I think trumps anything else.

At the same time, that very restriction might be the one thing preventing me from trying to do so with someone else, even to the point that it came about wholly organically, and there's nothing more pleasant than something developing when you least expected it. And it doesn't even have to be a relationship. Could be a friendship or even rivalry. But the chance of the other player being a couple screws loose makes a bit cautious on the whole thing.

So suffice to say, they're great when it works out and proverbial nightmare of OOC nastiness when it doesn't. Better to be picky than be miserable.

Where do you find these people? Teach me your ways! I've gotten chastised for... Rping on my alt while with my partner, for TSing on my alt while me partner was in a GMed scene, for my character being sightly rude to her character for in character reasons, FOR HAVING A RELATIONSHIP ON MY ALT...

How long did this relationship continue? Too long. Just. Too long. Didn't get married. Glad I didn't.

@deadempire Yeah, run away from that person fast. There are a few of those people out there, toxic AF. I h ad one time where i was RPing with a person, and her IC boyfriend kept paging us both while we were in the scene trying to figure out what was going on. Paranoia and possession run deep with some people. It's mucho creepy.
