Star Wars?
-
Does anyone have any idea what's open, active, and halfway decent?
-
Been looking a long while myself and haven't actually found anything even semi decent that's actually got good activity levels. At the moment it looks like the Star Wars MU*ing scene is kinda dead.
-
I believe there are currently three open and active? but could be wrong. One Saga, on D6 and one DSS.
I know AoA (Age of Alliances) is active, has decent RP, but is very Roll heavy and is gaining more and more systems that make it more code heavy than RP focused
-
I've looked at AoA but a friend who plays there described it as "sandboxey," with not a lot of GM-driven plotting, which tends to be a not for me kind of thing. It DID seem very active, though.
-
@three-eyed-crow that is a good way to describe it. It has meta-plot by virtue of being set in the time frame of the current movies. PCs largely RP around that plot doing their own stories because they can't really effect the bigger plot.
To paraphrase the headwiz just the other day, "Ideally I don't know what any of you are up to, I just hope it's all thematic"
-
This is my big problem in Star Wars games, or really any game set on a book series or other popular media that is at the current time.
The big damned heroes are already cast, so what does that make the PC's?
It's a hard thing to do right, and honestly, I've never seen it done right personally.
Not saying it hasn't been done, just I haven't seen it myself.

Uh... heroes in different stories? I mean, I get what you're saying but I don't get how that's different from literally every other MU out there. Even if it was a wholly original setting, not every MU character can be the last remaining "chosen one" literally saving the entire galaxy multiple times. It just doesn't scale that way.
-
@faraday You see it especially big in Star Wars games though. Nobody will ever be Darth Vader except for Darth Vader, or Yoda, or Luke, or Han, etc.
If it's a Star Wars game that is set in the same time period, but, /away/ from the big movie plot, with no FC's etc, then maybe you've got something there.

Gotcha. Yeah, being along for the ride during a re-tread of New Hope wouldn't interest me any. I was thinking more of things like SW:Rebels or Rogue One, where the PCs could be adjacent to the movie storyline but still had room to tell their stories and even potentially be heroes in their own right. (Though you still have the problem with the limited number of epic hero moments we discussed in the Spotlight thread.)
-
I think this is why I love the Old Republic era. While there's "big heroes", there's a lot of room for original characters.
-
@firepuff And the Knights of the Old Republic era is so /big/ that even the 'big names' are only a small blip of time during it.
-
@lithium Another theme idea that works is 'making it local'. All of my TT games from D6 on have mostly focused on a single sector of space with about 20 planets or so. You're not going to do the really big 'blow up the Death Star' canon stuff that the movies do and have Galaxy-wide consequences, but you can do the equivalent that make you Big Damn Heroes to your small patch of the Galaxy. Pretty much the same as what 'Rebels' did; make it important locally.
-
Did someone mention Kylo Ren's hair?
Asking for a friend.

I love the Old Republic era for so many reasons.
It was just goddamn epic and glorious.
-
@auspice Right? I would super check out an Old Republic era Star Wars game. But I am thoroughly uninterested in SW games set during the actual trilogy time periods for the most part.
-
Another major advantage of the Old Republic as a setting, to me, is that you don't have to contort yourself to allow players to play Force users, or limit them to a small segment of players.

Yes, exactly. It's removed enough from the big movie time periods that people don't feel constrained by the canon sequence of events, you don't have the problem of having big huge characters as FCs, you can freely have Force users on both sides... It just seems like the ideal time period to set a MU*. Pick one of the big, bustling planets that had both Jedi and Sith presence and base it there.

So what you guys are saying... is after I finish working on and get my superhero game either stable or dead from disintrest I should build a Star Wars Saga's KOTOR game? I like this idea.

That is EXACTLY what we are saying.
