David and I watched Bright as well. I thought it was great, and critics are maybe being a little jaded about it.
Jaded with a mix of Netflix hate I think.
-
Add me to the list of people who watched Bright and really enjoyed it.
[puts on conspiracy theory hat]
It kind of makes me wonder if it's just an anti-Netflix thing and/or if movie studios and/or theater chains are paying critics to tear it apart.
[takes off conspiracy theory hat]Either way I enjoyed it and I can certainly see watching it again.
-
@zombiegenesis I think the conspiracy is less people paying to get other people to tear it apart, and more just salty losers who think they have to shred movies that might be popular apart. Nobody thinks Bright is Shakespear, but it's a decent popcorn movie with a novel (in movies at least) setting.
I feel like the bulk of the criticisms I read of the new star wars movies are neckbeards trying to be the vanguard of criticism because they feel so burned by the prequels still, they likely loved the prequels, and were on record somewhere saying so, and now they feel foolish, so they're going overboard on criticizing the new ones.
-
The Last Jedi hate isn't even "fanboy" hate. It is entirely the same hate we saw for the new Mad Max. It's coming from the MRA camp. It's hate for Kelly Marie Tran because she's an asian (and cute, but not 'hawt') actress taking a major role in a movie. It's hate for Vice Admiral Holdo (Laura Dern), another female character in a role of leadership which 'hurr durr is forcing children to think men are evil!!!111'
And same as we saw with Mad Max, they'll flood all the channels they can with bullshit to make it appear legit. These aren't actual fans. They never were fans. These are just tiny-dicked assholes who feel their manhood is threatened because 'oh no they put more ladies and minorities in a movie cuz they's wipin' out menfolk'
The Bright issue is probably Netflix-related. Netflix has hurt network television in that it's shown it's a contender re: television shows and it's done a number on the decade-old model. If it comes in and shakes up the movie model too? Oh man, there's gonna be issues, y'all. (Though I'm mad at Netflix 'cause how y'all gonna cancel Marco Polo?!)
-
For me, I've been a fan of Star Wars since the original hit the theaters in 1977 so I very much consider myself a fanboy and I dislike The Last Jedi because I think it's a bad movie (not just a bad Star Wars movie but a bad movie period). I've never once thought the movie was bad because "OMG, wimminz are doing things!" I dislike it because I think it's a bad movie. I've also personally have not read anything from anyone saying "Well, the movie would be okay if they didn't have AN ASIAN in a major role!" How about the fact that I felt her and Finn's storyline was pointless?
All of my thoughts are marked as opinions, however, and I fully realize that other people very much enjoyed the movie. Which is great, I'm genuinely glad for them. I wish I enjoyed the movie more but I didn't. I guess maybe the "cool" thing to do would be to go on about how people with different opinions than mine are racist and sexist?
Maybe you didn't mean your post to be as offensive as I took it but I'm just a bit tired of this culture our society has developed of "Oh? You don't agree with me? Well, you must be a racist/sexist/*phobe/Etc.".

I don't see that she was talking about you, but not in the way that implies. You disliked the movie. You had reasons.
You are not rabid, frothing hate at the mouth. She specifically said hate. You do not hate. Waaaay diffefent.
ETA: There were literally Reddit groups coordinating and campaigning to drive down the ratings. THAT is what she is characterizing as the MRA stuff.

Marco Polo was fucking fantastic. Marco Polo was also fucking expensive, and was reportedly costing Netflix $9 million an episode -- making it one of the most expensive TV shows ever produced. Compare that to Battlestar Galactica at $1.5 million an episode, which is probably the closest to the viewership numbers I'd guess for Marco Polo. (Though who really knows? Netflix doesn't release their ratings, but numbers for Marco Polo were reportedly pretty low.) $9 million an episode is Game of Thrones level costs, which costs about $6-$10 million an episode to make depending on the season -- and was pulling in almost 26 million viewers per episode this year.
It's a numbers game, unfortunately.

Except any dissent and dislike of the TLJ is being characterized as trolling MRAs.
Thats what I have been seeing.

@firansurvivor And? You don't get to yell at someone for making generalities by doing so yourself. I don't care if other people were in some other space. She was not. My point was she was not. That other people do/were is irrelevant.
Hate is distinct from dislike. One is ok, the other when felt about a movie makes you a damn lunatic.

I'm still salty about Sense8.

@zombiegenesis
I don't think it is a conspiracy but it is a movie you have to know critics will hate.
Most critics tend to me more into movies for the art side rather than entertainment side, so their reviews will show that preference.
Hell that is why I make the distinction between good and what I like in movies. A movie can be very very good and I might not like it. (Citizen Kane for example, I will freely admit one of the best movies ever but I wold cut someone if they tried to make me watch it again.) Just like there are very bad movies that I love. (Toxic Avenger for example.)
I have not viewed it yet though I plan to after the holidays, but from what i have heard from both reviewers and normal folks I can safely say it most likely will not be particularly good but I will almost definitely like it. -

Did you specifically create a change.org petition to have TLJ struck from Star Wars canon?
Did you go to Rose's Wookiepedia page and continually make racist edits?
I assume not. You also phrased your post as you disliked the movie. That's fine. There's major movies out there that people love that I really don't (I didn't enjoy Deadpool at all, for example).
When I say TLJ hate, I mean the things above. I mean the coordinated campaign to flood the Rotten Tomatoes reviews to fuck with their metrics. All based on racism and anti-feminism. I don't mean people who didn't like it based on an actual viewing and breakdown of it as a film.

Matt Smith ruined Dr. Who for me.
None will be as good as him.

The problem there will be if the continued decline of Dr. Who's writing is in evidence, anyone who dislikes it for that reason (poor writing) may be at risk of being labeled 'anti-feminist.'
I stopped liking DW a while back for the poor writing. And I fear the female Doctor is a bid to save the show based on bringing in a female Doctor alone rather than a fresh writing staff and ideas. (Now if they did both, that'd be nice.)
But those are rants for the TV thread.

sorry bby. I fully admit studying screenwriting has made me picky af.
Even for my love of most of TLJ, I want to tear out the entire casino section and burn it in a fire. -

So I watched Bright and while it wasn't bad and I enjoyed it, I think I can see why critics disliked it.
The dialogue was rough. Like, really rough. In some parts, I just wanted to smack the script writer and whoever edited it with him (if anyone). The exposition was painful at times ('Boss, wanna unpack this for me' - I mean really? That whole scene made me cringe.)
So the story was good. It was fun. But the dialogue needed a few more passes in the editing stage and that's probably where it lost the biggest points with the critics.
