More sadness than anger, but...letting go of my biz after a good 3 year run is pretty painful. It's the right decision and I don't regret it, but it was my one thing that was just mine. I will be able to do it again I think once my toddler is in first grade. But I'm feeling pretty down about it.
-
@mietze Was this the raku stuff you were working with? I'm sorry to hear it. It sounds like a good call for now, but I get how it can be frustrating and feel like a giant let-down. Will keep fingers crossed you're able to get back to it, and have absolute faith you'll be able to do it.

Motherfuckers.

Yet another reminder about the importance of backups.
Backups that AREN'T connected to your computer the rest of the time, since backups that the ransomware encrypts when it hits your PC don't help very much, do they?
-
@Apocalycious The answer to that is: Implement a pull-backup system and you don't need to care.
Also remember folks: Backups you haven't successfully tested with a restore are
probablyworse than not having backups at all. -
There are also quite a few reasonably priced backup software solutions that can do most of the hard work for you. Even cloud backups are okay, if they let you create your own encryption key that doesn't get sent to them (which many do) and use good encryption (many do).
For most people the risk of data loss (device being lost, HD dying, ransomware, etc) is much greater than that of data being stolen from a cloud backup solution, and if it's also encrypted the risk is pretty minimal.
-
@Apocalycious Yeah, for me the biggest issue with cloud-backing isn't privacy (although it's definitely an issue) or even accountability (especially for the free solutions - if your free DropBox account suddenly loses everything do you even get any recourse?) but efficiency; regularly uploading enough GB of data takes a while.
But for documents, ebooks, pictures and such it's all usually all good. If you're a professional photographer it might not be for the reasons mentioned above.

My cat, normally a large, old fatass, who's more content to sleep all the time, becomes alive at the mere whiff of milk. I can never have a bowl of cereal in peace.
Also, for some reason my Spotify program has stopped working and I have no idea why. Which is a shame because I've been on a Pearl Jam kick recently.
-
@Monogram I think there's a 3-month Spotify premium sale lately for something ridiculous like 50 cents if you're into that.
-
I am so sick right now but my boss called in sick first so I had to cover.
-
...why is it always the day after the night I didn't get any sleep at all that they send the fire truck around blaring the siren and Xmas carols?
Because seriously it is fucking always. ,,,o.0'''

@Auspice It sounds like you're on top of it and I'm sorry you're experiencing this. It does sound a lot like something that happened to my sister almost kind of suddenly a year ago. Turned out, she had developed GERD (hitting your 30s is the best). I thought it just gave you constant heartburn but apparently in some people it sets off asthma attacks where none were before.
I dunno if this is helpful but thought I'd mention as it was one of those 'wait really?' moments.
Science is weird.

This has happened to me before. It's been about ten years, tho. And it was worse, then. I'm on omeprazole (Prilosec) already tho, 'cause joy of joys bad acid reflux.
Hopefully the doctor has something good to offer on Friday. The attacks aren't like 'omg maybe I should go to the ER,' but they're enough that I can't sleep. I'll be wheezing just enough and there's just enough of that 'weight' feeling in my chest that I can't sleep.
That is super crazy, tho. I've known a couple folks with GERD, but never heard of that.

I'm aware that everyone, especially parents, are about to laugh at this but... Damnit...
Can't follow my mildly obsessive compulsive day to day schedule with a five week old baby around, and it's totally stressing me out. Time to readjust...cue every free waking moment today, obsessively planning and organizing every activity and event for every hour for the next week...
Only to have it likely thwarted by this whole... Annoying "life" thing I have. =\ -
I was out of money and insurance and inhaler meds a few years ago. Ended up having to go to the ER. That feeling of suffocating slowly is so not fun. Hope you feel better soon!

I am sorry. I've been there and yeah, it super sucks.
I hit my insurance deductible back in November, so I will grabbyhand at whateeeeever the doctor wants to hand me on Friday since I won't have to pay for it.

I remember when my then GF wouldn't consent to an ER pelvic exam while having an asthma attack, and chocolate was our only medication to help her breath. Fortunately it did help.
-
Warning: Not a happy story.

@Arkandel
Goddamnit dude, fuck me for opening that at work.Kinda funny how I never used to have like a strong external emotional response to articles like that, but now that my kid lives with me I can't even make it through the headline without spraying around like broken faucet.

I saw that story the other day when my PMS-sensitivity was at its worst. I was weepy for at least an hour.
@Misadventure - clearly I need more chocolate.
