You're a special case.
I should point out that he has Cystic Fibrosis, so our food choices are usually limited to what his stomach can handle and in what quantities are necessary for his continued sustenance, so letting him work the magic there just happens to be a happy side effect. Thus our 'narrowing down of the things'.
Sushi being at the far end of the order of preference for both eliminated it, leaving 2. The rest is whatever he's feeling.

'What my stomach can handle' usually narrows the field a lot on my end, too. I love spicy food in general, for example, but there's plenty of times I cannot eat it. Same goes for dairy, greasy food, etc.
Overall I, the person, am not a picky eater. The stomach contained within can be depending on how badly the various issues I have are affecting it on a given day. So it's usually the biggest dictator as to what gets eaten.
But once I give the parameters, I am happily in the realm of 'anything goes.' I love trying new food, even, which is why I often don't want to choose. Introduce me to new, plz!
I don't have this issue. If we're getting take-out, "surprise me" is the go-to answer. If we're dining in, then the answer is super simple: don't be picky. I'd eat tree bark if I thought it'd do something for me. Burnt that pizza black? Hand it here. Oh no, that fight caused pepper spray to get onto my lunch? Oh well, down the hatch it goes - "hey, that's not half bad! Has some kick to it now!"
I just give her full control of where we dine and either opt to be surprised or just outright deal with what my selection is. Pickiness over food isn't really something that concerns me. I'm fortunate I guess, since it seems like a lot of folks have issues with being able to choose what they eat.

My reply is usually 'tell me where you're ordering and I'll figure it out'. And usually, if I absolutely just don't want anything in the place they're ordering, I'll order something else.
Because I'm a grown fucking person and can eat different food from other people at the same table.

I'd like to share my shameful story. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when, when I first came to China, it was hard to get English reading material. Any English books you found were treasured and shared among the (vanishingly small: 7 people) expat community. You wound up reading stuff you'd never even consider before. (I read Jackie fucking Collins!)
I happened upon a dusty, beaten-up copy of A Game of Thrones in a bookstore. I was somewhat of a fantasy fan (usually more SF than fantasy, but fantasy was up there) so I gleefully grabbed it, paid the ENORMOUS amount of money being asked (about a quarter of my monthly salary!) and scurried home.
I couldn't stand it.
I couldn't finish it.
The book was such a tedious slog that, despite being so starved for reading material I was reading Jackie fucking Collins, I couldn't finish it. Hell, I could barely begin it. I actually read the first Harry Potter book all the way through (although just barely) and couldn't stomach the first quarter of A Game of Thrones. I threw it out, not even putting it on the reshare circuit, because I wanted to make sure the book was destroyed.
So given this antipathy to the source material, and given how difficult and time-consuming it is for me to acquire up-to-date North American television episodes (read: not impossible, but a serious pain in the ass) there has never even once been a slight temptation for me to look at Game of Thrones.

I've never watched a single episode of Game of Thrones. I'm nether proud nor ashamed of it. It is a statement of fact.
Now, if I said that I've never watched a single episode and I'm proud of it because people that do watch it are tremendous douchebags, then, sure I'm a dickhead.
Same with people who trump around their ignorance about the Super Bowl, as if this makes them somehow morally superior. (I know people like this.)
To me, that's like folks decrying single-payer universal health care without knowing a damn thing about it. Being ignorant is fine, but using it like a sword is like giving a child a gun.
I'm horrible when it comes to food. It's because I don't actually like food. I know, it's shocking. So to me unless I have a craving for something; it's all the same. So I really cannot decide.
I am, however, fully up front about this.

I liked the books too much and have not watched the Game of Thrones. I'm worried it will ruin my brain movies of them. I know that probably doesn't make sense.

I watched through most of season 2, but the changes to some of the characters from the books bothered me too much. So I stick to the books. And that's what I tell people when they ask why I don't watch the show. I tried. I prefer the books. I'm good.

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. In the case of GoT, I couldn't.
I'm not saying anyone who minds the difference are bad people, but I get a little tired listening to the complaints. Different medium means content must be approached differently. I approach them the way I approach different directors with plays or covers of music. It's going to be different. How did they interpret it?
I can sense a rabbit hole of going about how people who don't like the interpretation are okay people, and they are, but this being the peeve thread and me stressing how minor the peeve is to me, I'm going to prematurely shrug one shoulder and nod.
