    • RE: New Mu* Creation: Atharia

      To update:

I believe all my theme files are written now. I will probably add a 'daily life' write up so people can incorporate typical things done each day into their RP if they want. I'm absolutely open to comments on what people feel I missed on putting in for theme files.

Still working on sorting proper plot stuff but for starts the first 'opening plot' will be trying to locate the Children of Gods'. The Children of Gods, to why they are important to find for the people, have the potential to become Gods. Think of them like Hercules, who is given X number of tasks he must complete yo ascend. The intent is so people can help the tasks assigned by the Gods to complete.

I've found a coder (woo) and we're still working out what code base to use. I'm leaving that up to my coder to decide what they would prefer. I've set up a list of things I want for code.

The grid itself shouldn't take long to do at all. I'm trying to make a decision on how large to make the grid. I don't want it to be huge but I also want to set it up so people can play in their kingdom as well as the neutral grounds.

So, hopefully, it won't be much longer before Atharia is fully playable.

"Coffee shop" rp (AKA rp amongst yourselves) should be at least half of your rp on a game. Otherwise, you probably aren't roleplaying a character so much as playing the world's crappiest video game.

I make something of a distinction between what we could call 'social rp' and 'coffee shop' RP.

To me social RP is primarily about getting to know the other characters and exploring the interactions they have with my own character and the enjoyment I derive from those interactions is often the primary reason I play MU*.

However 'coffee shop' RP often takes place in a literal bar or coffee shop and has a habit of leading people to the most boring interactions possible.Often the RP is just rote poses about ordering/consuming whatever and talking empty platitudes. It's possible to make these scenes interesting(The article linked in this thread is great) but it takes more effort since you have to break the pattern and introduce something the rest want to interact with.

I'm tempted to suggest it might be good policy to not have any generic bar/coffee rooms on a game grid as a way to guide people towards doing something more interesting as their 'default' scene.

But then you're isolating out people who /do/ like that 'boring' coffee shop play. I know a lot of people who do like to go to a bar or restaurant or whatever and chat about nothing. Not everyone wants to do scenes all the time that has some big purpose. sometimes they spent a whole day doing a thing that has a purpose (push plot along and so on) that they just want to go have casual play that likely will do nothing more than have them meet new people/hang out with people just because.

It really just comes down to letting people play what they enjoy (provided it is within the theme of the game) and directing them to people of similar tastes.

Not to add more reasons why to go the gala/social event. But this here. Both supers are not familiar though in the comics they end up on the same team. This moment where you're both in your mundane identity and something happens in front of your face - how do you stop it, do you out your secret or do you find another clever way to stop it. Not just the show up later in disguise after overhearing, but literally if you two seem to get along during the social event, move to something happens that tests this secret identity even.

It has been a while since I watched anything super but I recall Bruce/Batman and Clark/Superman have both been pretty clever in explaining their absence at certain times. Got knocked out, was taking notes on the scene in a safe place. Doesn't Bruce/Batman present his Bruce persona as a bit f a coward? Been some time since I watched or read so I could be remembering wrong.

@de-villefort said in MUs That We Would Love To Make (But Won't):

I realize Clark Kent could go to some random gala as a reporter and Bruce Wayne could show up at a random bowling alley in Gotham to hang out with the plebeians... but why...? Why would you want to role play that?

The person you are presenting yourself as is a lie. The person the other players characters are presenting themselves as is also a lie.

You both ends up talking about meaningless stuff with people you know you're never going to have any real connection too because you're lying to their face and all you can hope to get out of it is a chance to arrange to meet them again to talk about more meaningless stuff while you continue to lie to each other.

      Why bother?

My WoD characters do not generally talk about what they are. Talking about being a 'vampire' or 'Changeling' or whatever the choice is not something that should ICly be coming up in casual RP so it is not lying. My characters have developed solid relationship with people that trust is built up on. Not talking about something big like some special hook that is not branded about doesn't fall into 'lying'. Unless it is a couple and the person is not aging or something why would this 'secret' be talked about like talking about the weather?

Also, why wouldn't Clark Kent talk with someone casually? In the movies and comics he kind of goes 'Hey! What's going on?' to a random person. Sure, he could do his super thing and find out but he opts to interact with people. Batman has his rich playboy persona as a big part of his life. He's constantly in places where he can talk to people as someone who seems basically useless. He learns a lot of what is going on that way, with his 'coffeeshop RP'.

I feel like you're making the 'secret' the OMG most important aspect of the character and ignoring everything else about them. A Sin Eater is more than the person who deals with ghosts and the Underworld. The Noblewoman who can light things on fire with a touch because that is a special thing she can do is more than an arsonist. They have personalities, families, hobbies, etc. Why not focus on learning about the character (Much like you do in RL when you meet someone and you connect) over about their 'special' thing.

Do you walk up to some stranger and go 'I was abused as a child. Has anything like that happened to you?' in RL? So why would you go up to someone in a game all 'I'm a Changing Breed, a horse. Are you a supernatural being too?'?

I am aware it is not as point blank as that.

To sum it up.. if you make focusing on a person's secret your important thing for RP, anything else will never entertain you because the finding the secret is all you are presenting yourself as caring about. The people have offered so many suggestions and ideas to what could be used to create interesting RP.

      I'll add some suggestions:

      • Playng a noble? Meet with fellow nobles to make connections and (for those who like it) discuss possible marriage connections or gossip about the latest 'scandalous' actions done. Talk about the 'who knows who' stuff. Talk about pending conflicts, the latest fashion, who's the most famous.
      • Playing a Super on some game? Talk about how 'odd incidents' are happening, an upswing in recent deaths in your area, your favorite sport, the clubs you like to go too, the most famous people currently living locally, the up rise in crime, the police force seems corrupt, the local politician is taking bribes. (or so the rumors say).
      • A more fighty type? As suggested over hear plans of a mugging or potential murder or whatever and go be heroic and try stopping it with your friends. Train with your buddies, discuss the latest combat techniques. (I don't know much about combat stuff so best I can do)

There is literally countless things that you could RP about that is not someone's 'secret'. Honestly, unless it is important to RP.. I really don't care what a person's secret is (Sometimes it is). I mean it is fun to be a person 'in the know' about someone's thing but it is not make or break to told when it comes to RPing with the person.

      Even more on this: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-57325653

A lot of people are demanding Canada Day be cancelled (Yeah, yeah, today is Canada Day) but I'm not of that mind. I think people should celebrate Canada but also add an Orange Shirt to the mix and take some time to honor all the children lost. I've never been a fan of forcing people to mourn something because its not genuine then. But, anyone (Canadian or not, Native or Not) who would wear an Orange Shirt today, I would ❤ but I'm not demanding it. I would rather it be a choice not an obligation. Even better if it is extended to be worn on July 4th as well, to honor the American Natives who have faced the same thing.

@icanbeyourmuse Based on what I see people playing on Arx? Yes. Scholars are popular.

You made a good point so I set up a position for the scholarly types not blanketed in the social position. I was already leaning a little in favor of the scholarly position I just wasn't certain it would be of interest to more than just me:

I'm interested in if anyone has thoughts on something because I'm back and forth.

I have Baronets and Knights as a middle class position that commoners can obtain (To me it feels like commoners always miss out on big positions on L&L games so i made something exclusively for them). They are the people that are used for 'honor' battles, so to speak, for social and combat fights. Baronet being the mental/social position and knights being the, as is common, physical position.

What I'm thinking of doing is adding a position for the mentals to be separate from the socials. So that they have a special thing they can aim for to obtain. They would be on par with Knights and Baronets, awarded just the same, chosen just the same, etc.

Would that be something that interests people who like to play scholarly types? To be able to be the 'official' scholar type for a noble house with perks and benefits for being as such.

The major benefit besides the official title that Baronets and Knights get is they have a village 'given' to them as a reward for their position.

I am just curious to if a scholarly title/official position would be something that people would find an interesting aspect before I go about creating a name for the position and making the write up.

    • RE: New Mu* Creation: Atharia

I have been spending the past couple days setting up family details for the starting families/noble houses. Since there are a couple titled commoners, I've also made them too. I also made them all coats of arms (not happy with them but I like the chosen colors).

I also now got a map of the world. It's not perfect but it is close enough. I would probably have to fully customize to get what I want. The layout is what I want, the biomes of the land are not fully set up how I want them.

The policies have been properly written since I first posted the update. They are still subject to be changed/added to as we go along/realize we missed stuff.

      ~~

The code base is going to, still, be TinyMUX. I don't understand any of how to code in anything else. Even my TinyMUX code skills are limited but I can do a few things by myself. The Arxcode is lovely but I'm not nearly skilled enough to figure out how to set everything up properly.

I have a /potential/ coder but we'll see on that. At this point, I think we're just waiting on codely stuff to get done. I considered switching to Penn for the Faraday System but it still falls in my lack of knowledge for Penn stuff. Plus, for my purposes, I'm not big on the background skills thing.

AGES later. I've basically finished writing all the news files for Atharia. A few little things need tweaking or adding. Some will even be modified to read better and/or for fitting wit certain NPC things.

Atharia is still a world where people are 'cursed' to repeat the same life over and over again but each life is slightly different due to actions of a previous life.

The 'nobles' are people who remember their previous lives.

There are mythical creatures to be discovered.

Marriages are mostly political but love is considered for matches. Commoners can't marry into nobility but we've added options that basically put them as close as they can be to being noble. Same sex marriages are a thing.

Sexuality is extremely freeform. Basically, there is no 'shame' on people who decide to sleep with all the people or on people who decide to be chaste. The only people who prize virginity are Courtesans and that is only due to favors they can obtain (even then, it is more symbolically used than anything). Pregnancy prevention is flawless, so bastard children are few and far between since it is a choice by /both/ parents to create a child (as the prevention works even if just one person takes actions to prevent).

      The Gods are meddlesome creatures.

For actual being able to read stuff fully:

      https://sites.google.com/view/atharia/home

      ~~

Anyways, atm, I've switched to TinyMUX because I know how to somewhat code in that but I'm not set on stone in the use of TinyMUX as a code base. I'm open to discussions on others if someone is interested in coding but has a preferred system.

So, I would love it if someone was interested in helping with code stuff. I've listed a thing of 'wants', I'm pretty much on board with using codes already established where possible.

I might have missed stuff but codes desired:

      https://sites.google.com/view/atharia/wanted-code

      ~~

I'm interested in people who would like to help build the grid to but, really, I and my current theme staff can do that. It would just make life easier.

      ~~

I am still working on writing up policies properly. So, don't consider any of that gospel or ready. I'm /always/ open to discussing policy stuff.

      ~~

Side note, I'm unlikely to go with having a wiki and will probably be sticking with Googlesites. Though, I'm not completely dismissing the idea of wikis if someone can make a good pitch. I'm not fond of people having character pages with all the images and bright colors. I like things to be consistent across pages on the game website, at least lookwise.

My host has said that he is not certain how to make Ares work on his stuff so, that is off the table as an option.

      ~~

Message or comment here any interest in being player or helping staff side. Hopefully it won't be long until Atharia is a place. That will basically depend on code stuff.

    • Orange Shirt Day for Native Children

I don't know if the Americans do something similar but Canadians have an 'Orange Shirt Day', usually Sept 30. It is to honor the children (some still living today with trauma, many died) taken away from their family and put into residential school.

Here is a bit of info: https://www.orangeshirtday.org/about-us.html

There is a bit of an exception right now. Recently 215 children were found, buried and forgotten, by the people (Churches), that ran the residential schools. I'm not demanding it or anything but a lot of people, especially Natives in Canada, or at least my area, are honoring those children. IF it is something you can and would do, consider wearing one today?

      https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/remains-of-215-children-found-at-former-kamloops-residential-school-first-nation?fbclid=IwAR0toyraP7TwJG7YVs3SrPhdI7znatyiLGhrI5bUDtOhDYCdBCH0FRlBIOQ

I don't know how much of you know about stuff like Residential Schools, the 60s Scoop (which is when native children were snatched from their families) and many other events. A bit of a google search will probably bring up a lot of this stuff if it interests you to learn more.
