      Double post because:

      Licensing

I recently decided to go back and watch Supernatural from the beginning because Netflix and hey why not, I can binge the whole show.

Except I kept thinking something was off.

And when I got to Faith, in Season 1, there is a certain song playing at a certain moment that very much sets the tone. Those who know the show know what I'm talking about.

Except in the Netflix version it's an entirely different song and I have no idea what the fuck that is supposed to even be.

That song is set to one of the most memorable moments in Supernatural, and to not have it with the shot is a goddamn crime. The soundtrack to the original seasons was the best part.

ETA: For those who don't mind spoilers, it's this scene. How can you switch that song?

Oh, god. Sam and Dean are babies. BABIES.

Okay, I need a reality check here.

Interview was on Thursday. I sent my thank you note about an hour later, with an attachment of something I made when my department was having a similar to problem to one they mentioned.

Since then, both interviewers have replied to my thank you note - which is not something I've ever experienced before - saying how nice it was to meet me. One told me to let her know if I have any questions.

That's a really good sign, right? I'm not overanalyzing and looking for signals that aren't there?

No, Ben. No. No one else in the entire department is having issues with the application.

All three incident management emails which I wrote, the login error message, and the bright red notification on the application hub screen that I pushed out were all things I put together today just for you.

By all means, please send out a department-wide blast to 136 people, including my boss's boss's boss's boss to ask what's going on and ask if anyone can help you, instead of reading literally any single one of the five fucking things that popped up on your screen today about this.

Y'know, the ones that the other 135 people in the department managed to read just fine.

This is a really stupid thing to be excited about, but I got one of those plastic-donut things for putting your hair up in a bun, even when your hair is fine and stupid and would only make a little hair nugget if you tried to put it in a bun on your own.

I cut my hair super short when I was about 14? 15? and kept that pixie cut for well over a decade, so I missed out on all of those years when it seems like every other woman on the planet figures out how to manage her own hair. As I've spent the last few years growing it out to past my shoulders, I've also had to (sometimes rather embarrassingly) spend my 30s figuring out how this all actually works.

Now I'm like, "Waaaaaaaaaaaaaait..... I can outside in the summer and not immediately look like an electrified poodle?! AWESOME."

It's a really, really stupid little thing to be excited about, but given the year insomniac and I have had.... fuck it, I'll take it.

(Note: Ponytails are not an option due to the spectacular "young Samuel, the colonial youth excited to start his new apprenticeship at the printer's press" vibe I give off when wearing one.)

@rinel said in Dead Celebrities 2021 Edition:

      are there actually rules

Yes, there are. Lots of them.

When a royal needs to use a surname, they don't generally use their house, they use the name of their title. Prince Charles uses Wales, as did his sons prior to gaining their own titles, for instance.

It's actually even more complicated than that!

In 1917, the family adopted the surname "Windsor" by the order of then-King George V. Sometime in the early 1950s, the Queen amended that order to Mountbatten-Windsor to reflect Prince Phillip's family name, but it only applies to her descendants. However, that's a surname that he adopted from his mother in the 1940s after WWII because, y'know, for some reason the Brits were feeling super salty about the Germans and didn't really want a royal consort running around named Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, as @hedgehog mentioned.

However, @Tinuviel is also correct in that several royals use surnames derived from their father's title on institutional paperwork. Like he said, both of Charles' sons used Wales as a derivative of their father's title of Prince of Wales and George, William's son, uses George Cambridge at school, because his father is the Duke of Cambridge. Whether or not that would change when Lizzie passes and everyone moves up a rank in the succession, I don't know....

Because there are, in fact, a lot of rules. But when you're the royal family, you also just get to make those rules up because fuck it, you can. And that's basically the same thing as not having any rules at all, @Rinel.

In short, everyone is technically correct. Which as we know, is the best kind of correct.

Yeah, yeah. This is a bit of thread necromancy here, but I had an experience today that left me pretty upset, so.....

I've been trying to reach out to friends, coworkers, and classmates that I know have family in India right now to see what I can do to help besides the donations that I've already made and the response I've gotten is just..... raw, and pained, and terrified, and entirely human. And thick with the sort of gratitude that breaks my heart, especially when one after another has told me that for the most part, no one outside the Desi community has reached out to them directly.

There are nearly 400,000 people in India being diagnosed with COVID a day and nearly 4,000 dying -- and that's just the official count, which many people are saying is grossly underreporting the situation from a lack of personnel, supplies, and access in remote or rural areas. One friend of mine has lost four family members in the last three weeks alone; two more of her cousins are in the hospital getting what treatment they possibly can. I just.... yeah.

I'm going to be linking a small slew of places that you can donate to. Please do so if you can.

And if you can't? Check on your Indian friends and colleagues. They are absolutely not okay right now and kindness costs nothing but a few minutes of your time.

      Indian Red Cross
      GiveIndia
      Pratham COVID Relief Fund
      Sewa International

I also know of two GoFundMe campaigns that I can link to if anyone is interested, both verified as authentic through people I know who are either directly involved with them or whose family members are.

I honestly don't know much about anarcho-syndacalist, but wouldn't anarchy, technically, be the extreme far far far FAR right? Absolutely no governmental regulation?

No, anarchy isn't about no government regulation. It's about power structures being arranged horizontally rather than vertically because vertical power creates hierarchies that are inherently exploitative. Most anarchists I've been exposed to want a democratic government, but a directly democratic one instead of a representative one and one in which any official can be removed from power at any moment by a simple vote.

^ This. Anarchism is not The Purge: Now in 24/7 Mode! despite a bunch of fearmongers trying to make everyone think it is. It's essentially "direct power over others turns people into assholes" made into political theory.

      Also:

PS - If you're pro-choice on the basis of "it's not my business what people do with their own bodies" or pro-gay marriage on the basis "the government shouldn't get a say in who you love, as long as everyone is consenting freely".....

      SURPRISE!

You have some left-wing libertarian social values. It's just that no one told you that because we usually associate the word libertarian with survivalist crazies who are like "Imma storm and squat on federal park land as a stand against the gubbament, because that sounds like a good idea. Send snicky-snacks, please."

Also, a lot of right-wing libertarians are anti-taxation and believe everything should be privately owned, including police, schools, roads, and etc, despite the example of privately owned prisons being utter shit-shows.

I know a decent number of those folks and sincerely hope they all move off to some entirely private island to indulge in their Atlas Shrugged wank fantasies and see how long they last after having opted out of modern society.

See: Above post about "Please send snicky-snacks."

My sweet old man has started having worse and worse arthritis because of his age, so we increased his dose of pain meds.

The trouble is the pain meds upset his stomach, which is already fairly sensitive. So right now he's having his dog food withheld and is on a diet of rice cooked up in chicken broth until his tummy feels a little better.

The thing is, special dog rice is apparently boring and yucka, so he's only eating about half of it and then refusing the rest. (No, this is not because his tummy hurts, I assure you. He's eating his medicine wrapped up in cheese slices and flavored dog vitamins just fine, the little asshole.)

He's basically just being a drama queen, throwing a tantrum because dinner isn't what he wanted. Clearly, he is neglected and abused. His people beat him, and make him sleep in piles of snow, and he has never even smelled food in his entire life. We're obviously monsters, based on our desire for him to neither be in pain nor pooping all over himself.

Similarly, we shouldn't be aiming for 'back to normal.' Normal got hundreds of thousands of people killed. We should be aiming for better than normal.

^ This. If there's one thing I think the pandemic demonstrated, it's how many things were just.... fundamentally non-functional in our society and that I don't want to go back to.

So seeing so many different groups from schools to businesses to government agencies bungle it so badly in the hopes of rushing us back to things the way they were before we have the chance to notice or object is infuriating.

Even my own company, whose decisions I laaaaaaaaaaargely approve of (which is a big part of why I work there) is making a return to work plan that, while not dangerous, is inherently stupid. It absolutely takes zero advantage of a model, does nothing to lower our costs, actively exacerbates a few key space issues we've been having for several years now, and is pissing off employees. And the response by management is to shove their fingers in their ears, shout "LALALALALALALA CAN'T HEAR YOU", and double down.
