    • RE: Search Broken

@faraday To be honest a Discord server linked directly from here, and with a bot keeping users up to date on new posts on that side could work.

My only reservation is that I don't want to have to be responsible for or police one more thing as well, especially since our local trolls find their way there. And there's no way I'd enable voicechat on one either way 😛

    • RE: Good TV

@lordbelh I haven't watched it. I was up late watching the Raptors game so I didn't have it in me to stay up more. So I avoided the internet for the entire morning, I was super paranoid about being spoiled.

Then my freakin' niece from across the freakin' ocean PMs me on Facebook and spoils it.

      Arrrrghhhhhhh.

It's not really that complicated, technically-speaking, it's just a PITA. Any time you have multiple tools working together you have a fragile ecosystem trying to keep them all independently up to date and working happily with each other.

That's my problem. If say, the search functionality was pissing me off enough I could just look into the code and figure out what makes it find matches so... badly. But then I'd have to make sure it continues to work when we update nodebb versions, future plugins, etc.

And this is with one moving part. Add more to the mix and it's a hard no.

Also keep in mind staying at the current version isn't an option for us - in the past templates broke because we weren't updating the platform.

    • RE: Chronicles of Darkness cyberpunk game seeking help.

@rnmissionrun said in Chronicles of Darkness cyberpunk game seeking help.:

I don't see why that should be the case, assuming they are able to find enough people to help out. The hard part is usually code, but the fact they'll be writing that code in Python rather than MUSHcode should speed up the process considerably.

Another question when it comes to 'how long does it take' is comparing the original deployment versus future requests. As @faraday mentioned it's going to be considerably faster upfront to take an existing codebase and tweak rather than figure out a new one you're not already familiar with... but you (meaning the game-runners) need to ask themselves what they may want to implement down the line.

Many games (for a while there it looked like every game) was content with just this and it'd be overkill to spend the extra effort for a different codebase in that case.

Other games have different requirements; web (or any other protocol) real time integration for example. If so then it makes every kind of sense to pick something else. Hell, many self respecting programmers want to actually either transfer their hard-earned skills in existing respectable languages over or at least to hone them - for example I haven't coded in python in a long time, and messing around with a MU* could be helpful in general. That's another big reason, too.

Anyway, my point here is that the choice of tools always depends on the project's goals.

    • RE: RL Anger

There are two kinds of people I know for a fact are going to hell.

      1. You, person who had the bench this morning as I was clearly waiting for one and got up with two 45 plates on it to walk away... somewhere. And never come back. At least tell me you're done so I can start instead of leaving me hanging and I'll rack them for you! Are you going to grab some water or a towel? Are you just pacing between sets? What are you doing?!

      2. You, person who has five 10s on each side of the barbell so there are no 10s left in the gym. Use a 45 and a 5 or two 25s! It's the same amount of weight!

      Hellfire, that's all I'm sayin'.

    • How did you discover your last three MU* ?

The topic should be sufficient but just to expand on this, but I'm wondering how you actually discovered, say, the last three games you played on. Not how it should have theoretically worked, or how it should be, but where did you hear about them?

      So,

You have two votes in case more than one answer applies.

Two more non-poll options as well I'm curious about:

      • Did you hear about those games from an ad (i.e. some specific attempt to sell you the game, even if it was a friend going "HEY COME PLAY WITH ME IT'S AWESOME") or through discussions about those MU* in general which weren't trying to lure people over.

      • Were you looking for a new game when you heard or did it just happen to come up and it caught your eye?

@Ominous Remember though that there's only so much you can do on a wiki if you're using printed, copyrighted material for your game. At some point the players will need to consult their rulebook.

I don't know how the others were done, but basically Devilshire was a small town with way too much magic in it and two Slayers designated to patrol it (legit it was just two slots for slayers).

In this era of "omg you can't limit slots whaaaaa" I don't know how people would do it other than, you know, maybe just no one gets to be a slayer.

Yeah, that was one of my questions. Also can PCs be Slayers? What can PCs be? And what about themes - is this a coming-of-age thing centered around highschool drama with monsters in the mix or would the usual former sniper/marine concepts be a thing?

    • RE: Descent Reboot

      @Taika said in Descent Reboot:

I'm hoping to be able to bring new players in and get them plotting and involved. If we have a bunch of plot-xp heavy folks, that means there's a lot of plots happening, in general. And I, personally, have no problem throwing newbies plot-bones or a 'welcome to the aboard, these are the people of import for your clan/covenant' to help get them tied in a little quicker.

I really don't want to discourage you, please don't take this as criticism as it's not intended that way! But plot and plot-runners are a real chicken-and-egg situation; if you don't have regular PrPs and things happening your players move on, which means newcomers have nothing to do and leave as well, whereas if they all stayed a while some of those people would be running PrPs thus giving everyone else stuff to do.

So if you want this to work out, while you're designing the rest of the game then don't hope for, plan on how you'll cater plot to your players. The first few weeks are critical - if you get good word of mouth and folks invite their friends you're in business.

That's why I care about game populations. It's not that I think bigger games are better, it's that they increase the chances someone will be doing something, somewhere. And the effect of active STs scales up so damn well.

@wildbaboons said in Wheel of Time MU(SH|X):

And I think I may have settled on theme (for the moment). Fourth Age, shortly after the Last Battle. Instead of basing it in an existing city, a new city is being formed somewhere or another from all the nations involved as a sort of nexus/UN deal with plenty of opportunity for world building for folks that like to do that, politicking for those sorts, and the more adventurous stuff as well

The time period sounds exactly right.

The city... I don't know that it matters too much. Book purists will want an existing city (Caemlyn, Cairhien, Tar Valon would all work) and more casual players probably won't care what the nexus is called.

Ultimately a few weeks in it shouldn't matter either way as long as the other pieces are in place.

If I log on at PennMUSH, Puggy, Brazil, RhostDev Site or any of the other social ones

That's the other thing... marketing! I mean RhostDev and PennMUSH aren't great names if you're trying to attract a demographic who don't know what the game type even is.

Please unlink Fantasy from D&D, There is little about the system that is necessary to a fantasy setting, and it is full of character limiting mechanisms unless you get into the chaos of addons like Buy The Numbers.

I brought up D&D in particular because (as we've discussed before 🙂 ) I like using popular systems people are more likely to already be familiar with as the source material for settings. Pathfinder would also work, for example.
