@Kanye-Qwest I don't want to answer for Theno or anyone else, but it's a bit disconcerting to be tossed in with a very, very large group of people (in fact roughtly 50% of all humanity) like you share opinions, ideas or intentions and most importantly faults with 'them'.

We're not a hive mind, we just have a penis. In fact some claim it means we have less of a mind, not more.

The day a specific male is being misogynistic or a bigot call him on it. Otherwise it can get a bit offensive pretty quickly.

My issue - in this forum's context at least - is that either issues being discussed have to allow for rational conversation to take place or I have no particular inclination to participate in that discussion.

The first possibility means replies which are literally or sound very close to "you are just as big a part of the problem as molesters" or "this makes me so mad!" are too ... charged to debate. It leaves very little room for actual reasonable dialogue to develop.

The second possibility simply seems like a lose/lose proposition. Who wins if we can't talk things like adults which might include the possibility of disagreeing - or even not agreeing across the board on every issue? Is that going to be better and, if so, for whom?

@Bennie This sounds oddly specific - more like a peeve. Did you run into a Viking theme-dominated sphere or something?

      DOUBLEPOST.

P.S. Are you saying that #notallmen isnt' the sort of thing that is distracting and derails a conversation regarding this topic? Because I'm pretty sure that's exactly what it is and what it does.

Well, if you are pretty sure then I guess that's the end of the debate.

I value dialogue more than I do almost anything else. It's one of the foundation stones of civilization - we must be able to talk to each other even if we come from different places to begin with.

In the context of conversation it doesn't matter to me who I'm talking to; it's irrelevant if I like you or you like me, what your race or political affiliations are, if we have a past or not... I strive to be civil not for your sake or for my own but because that's the only way I know to be respectful to the act of exchanging ideas and viewpoints itself. I'd like to think that expecting the same courtesy isn't done out of spite or entitlement but perhaps I am wrong.

Either way I did not mean to offend anyone and I apologize since I seem to have done so. I just wanted to understand and maybe help out as I could. If it makes it any better perhaps I know more now than I did coming into the thread even if the route there was unexpected.

    • RE: CoD - Victorian - Penny Dreadful-ish.

@Cupcake Those are reasons we should want games in different settings. A character like yours in a modern city wouldn't even raise eyebrows for example, so the whole concept is different.

As for historical accuracy, that's why an 'alternate' Victorian-era is crucial. I don't want to have to care about who was Prime Minister at the time.

@surreality This is also true - but if people want to trash talk they will. You don't have to withhold TS from them, often times you need not do something special to deserve it other than to exist.

Caring about the opinions of others in such a context empowers them. If we do we relinquishing power over our state of mind and self worth to folks who are not worth it.

I pay a lot of heed to criticism and points made by folks I deem worthy of my respect. It doesn't matter if they like me, but I need to know I hold them in high regard first.

The rest... well, the rest are just white noise generators when it comes to their actual emotional impact on my day.

@Lithium The difference is some things aren't opinion-based - they aren't subjective. For example herd immunity isn't subject to well, we can agree to disagree. And it's not like someone is choosing to harm themselves in the privacy of their own home which at worst might raise health insurance rates, but something which harms society as a whole.

    • RE: The Work Thread

Adding to what @ganymede said. Being in management has exposed me to a lot of 'behind the scenes' stuff that goes on when corporations look for suitable candidates, interview them, hire them... or let them go.

Although you could land into a good situation and be looked after, no one is obligated to do so. For example rates aren't decided by what you are worth, but by the minimum you will accept or stay at the role you're filling; you could do research on the current job market value for your job but unless the powers that be decide you intend to leave, or that you already have a better offer on the table, why would they pay you that if they can pay you less? It's as simple as that.

In fact managers are often confused when folks don't do that. This guy makes what? Why is he still here?

Look after your interests. They are not necessarily aligned with anyone else's.

You know, I like making a new character from scratch on a game I'm excited about and even PBs (and conversations leading up to picking one) can be fun, I've even even been known to hunt through my notes and the googlez for appropriate book quotes that fit the concept... but music? I can't find and wouldn't even know how to start looking for a soundtrack if I tried.

So yeah, I recommend it. But totally okay if it's a 'yeah no' for people too.

I've a question! With a built-in preemptive apology if I misread your post.

Do folks mind it so much if their profession is not represented accurately or even respectfully in TV or movies? Because I've heard similar comments to people close to me about, for example, the animal services field, medical professionals in general, etc.

The reason I ask is that I'm in IT. And a whole lot of my field is either portrayed in a hilariously incorrect way (hacking, development, the time it takes to do stuff, even the scope of what computer professionals do since apparently we're also experts in not just every aspect of our own field but everything from DNA evidence to nuclear physics), or is openly mocking us for being introverts, basically on the spectrum as a whole, etc. I figure lawyers are on the same boat or a very similar-looking vessel.

Anyway, my point here is these things doesn't bug me, it's just... kinda funny to see the tropes play out the way they do. I guess I'm also pretty used to it by now since that's been the portrayal in media since the 80s.

Do y'all mind much if your profession is butchered a fair bit in its fictional portrayal, either for comedy material but even in more serious material?

(Seriously, every large social scene should have sub-goals for people attending - exchange packages or information, cause social strife between specific people, repair relationships, lure someone to an isolated corner and shiv them, SOMETHING.)

      This forever.

I don't want to derail this with my thoughts about large social scenes in PrPs (I think once some things I'm currently running are done I'll make a thread about just that) but I'd expand that to say that if every such scene should include more internal structure than its name.

In other words if I plan to run the Frankfort Frank Festival and the only parts of my involvement as a ST is to pose the setting while people just play without any external stimuli from that environment, it's not a PrP. It's a glorified bar scene.
