... sorry for Thanos or even impressed? The guy came down to Earth without any Infinity Gems this time and he still fought so many people in a row. First Thor+Cap+Iron Man went at him at the same time pulling no punches at all, then Cap with freakin' Mjolnir, then Wanda, then Captain Marvel, with assorted combinations of basically the entire Marvel Universe shooting all sorts of shit at him at one point or other. And they all had a deep, profound personal grievance to settle which would only end with his death.

It was kinda like that scene from Airplane! but with superheroes.

Violence. Smoking (as referenced in one of the prior posts). Murder. Sexual content. These are 'triggering' things as discussed.

And this is so hard to enforce because limits ought to work both ways. For instance my instant thought when I saw smoking was "wait, really? that's too much", simply because I'm not a smoker and/or it doesn't bug me.

But if it bugs someone else why not allow them to point it out? If it's a minor thing in the scene they could just be accommodated without any true loss or need to nitpick, which seems to be the entire point of X Cards in general - that they don't need to be explained.

Because the moment they have to be justified and debated they are that much less likely to be raised in the first place, which leaves a person unhappy with something that might be trivial to remove.

How about a link to a HowTo, then? A lot of game runners don’t know where to start and mucking around in iptables could be dangerous.

It is, but I'd arguably say not knowing the basics of networking while messing around blindly with iptables may be worse than whatever attack is happening on your game, since you're risking making it inaccessible even by yourself - say, by blocking ssh connections.

Perhaps what a kind soul could do is create and document examples of very specific things to do for common tasks - such as banning one IP, or one specific /24 range.

      For example

      sudo iptables -A INPUT -s 110.111.112.0/24 -j DROP

will drop all inbound traffic originating from 110.111.112.* .

... is that for the most part the Night King and his forces, other than being a massive threat to all life, are not very conductive to cinematography; all you can do is fight them, run away from them or be afraid/defiant of the dead. They don't talk, there's no dialogue; you can't negotiate with them. They won't give you a rundown of their hopes and ambitions.

I feel a lot of the discontent comes from having different expectations of the show than it wanted to cater to. So much I read online was so based on things like time travel (Bran = the Night King), rather extreme takes on who TPTWP is and why, shocking plot twists... but those are not good for TV shows or movies. Most viewers probably still don't have a fucking clue what all these prophecies from season 2-3 were - they wanna see Starks kicking ass because those are their heroes.

There were many truly spectacular scenes in there. Lyanna Mormont killed a goddamn undead giant. Jorah had a beautiful death.

And Arya, a girl trained for the whole show to be an assassin killed someone - and people still complained. That was for Jon! He was being prepared the whole show for it!

... You know, like Ned Stark was the obvious hero of the series. Oh no, wait, that was Robb - the Young Wolf, he was the one. No wait.

This series messes with a lot of obvious narratives. It messed with this one as well. It might not be for everyone (but it is pretty damn good) so ... I'm glad it is for me, because I loved the hell out of it.

    • RE: First Through the Gate Syndrome

@Thenomain It's also strange because, by going first, you can set your character up a little bit better too.

For example I don't feel comfortable posing as already being in a room if someone else poses that they've been there for a while as well - so if my alcoholic guy is already in his third beer at eleven in the morning it's harder to establish that without resorting to exposition of some sort where three empty glasses and a resigned sigh by the waiter who comes to clean them up would do the trick but... better.

Going first can be very advantageous. Plus you stand a bigger chance of people actually reading your whole pose rather than losing it in the entrance spam. 🙂

@bored Oh, one more thing I just responded to a buddy of mine on FB posting (spoilers to anyone who visits the link) this YouTube analysis from a strategic point of view.

      My takeaways from it:

      1. This is a TV series, not a tactical simulation. Spending 20 minutes to discuss fantasy-military siege strategy is missing the point by... a lot. This isn't an RTS game.

      2. Comments like "I still enjoy it but..." just baffle me. But what? What the hell...? What do people want more than enjoyment? Life-long fulfillment?

But also, let's not gloss over issues the MU community needs to try to solve (to help keep new blood) by generalizing that all online cultures have problems, or by confusing the issue by claiming MUCK, MUD, MOO, MUX, etc all have entirely different cultures.

You're going too far, I think. Just the fact we have all these terms - MUCK, MUD, MOO, MUX - is a barrier to entry.

And Ned was unquestionably a good person, but I do not think he was actually a good leader when it comes down to it; he was willing to risk everything—his home, his people, his family—because he wouldn't compromise his honor.

I'll tackle this outside of spoiler tags since they're unnecessary for it.

Ned was an excellent liar. In fact he kicked ass with it - he had a secret which he kept from everyone for many years, including his own wife, and in fact he used his immaculate reputation as a way to perpetulate that lie; no one questioned how this honorable man had a bastard with some random chick because why would he lie about it? Duuuh.

And even later in life he made the choice of his people over his honor. It's how he lost his head by admitting to treason specifically so they'd be safe from the Lannisters. Things would have actually worked out pretty well if Joffrey wasn't a complete idiot about it - Eddark Stark in the Night's Watch could have altered the course of several events on the Wall.

Having said that his biggest mistake was made due his honor of course, by warning Cersei about what he knew and giving her a chance to strike first.

I'd love a Hunter and M/M+ only game where you are constantly outmatched and outclassed by everything at all. Maybe include ghouls and WB types as playable, too, but that's it.

Game of Thrones goes down in history as a show that ended too quickly. As in: 5 episodes wasn't enough.

Almost certainly but I think this was inevitable. Think about it - Episode 4 for example barely contained action (perhaps ten minutes of it, total) and it was what, an hour long? That's almost a full-length movie just for politics and wrapping up Episode 3. Granted they could have perhaps used the time more wisely but still, there are many points we need to wait until the end for a resolution. And dammit but I quite liked Episodes 1-2 which is where I'd have saved some time.

As in: The Battle at Winterfell and the Battle at King's Landing will move too quickly and people will feel like not enough was addressed.

Episode 5 is gonna be a fucking bloodbath. I'd be shocked if we don't get at least 3 important/favorite character deaths.

I have a feeling all of this stuff like: What about the Prince who was Promised? Who is this unnamed Dornish Prince? What the fuck ever happened to Edmure Tully or Ellaria Sand? Where is Nymeria? What about the Reed family? I feel like these things will likely not get addressed and hardcore fanpeoples are going to be in Thanks, we liked it, but it was too quick and not thorough enough for our 2 billion theories and love for x or y fringe character mode.

I concur. Look, we (as in, fandom) are putting a lot more thought into this than the writers are. They just want to wrap this up, and they won't risk alienating casual viewers by reminding them of characters we haven't seen in two years (what's a Dorne?), a direwolf they don't remember exists (even Ghost has been barely there) or the whole Reed family ('who?'). And anything trickier than that would be hard to pull off.

So yeah, we'll be told it's an open-ended conclusion and that's it. I seriously doubt that with two episodes left - one of which is an enormous battle scene - they'll have room for anything too fancy; there just isn't enough time to wrap it up. They'll stick to what people know and care about; the Stark kids, Dany and the remaining Lannisters.

I'm not complaining, mind you. It was a hell of a show while they had the books to follow and they didn't do a bad job following through afterwards - it just wasn't on the same very high level, but that's not what they signed up to do. D&D were supposed to have at least one more book to guide them by season 6.

I'm grateful for having a show like this since it opened up a lot of interest in the genre and it has contributed to a resurgence of fantasy across the board.

    • RE: Spars and fights

To me one of the basic parts of building up chemistry while roleplaying fights is to be on the same wave length with the other person(s?) about the style. I don't mean posing style or the verbiage involved, just... the general spirit of it.

For example a fight can be cinematic, full of backflips, walk-walking, heroic poses and such. It can also be more of a conversational piece full of banter, multi-sentence dialogue, taunting and generally stuff that ignores the physical vigor using it as a backdrop for other things. It can be also be hardcore super realistic (or at least what passes for that on MU*) with energy conservation being a primary concern, participants keeping track of how fatigue or minor injuries affect the spar going forward, etc.

Aside from the outcome, using dice or not... aside from all that, I think it's important everyone agrees beforehand how it's going to be, because mixing those things usually won't work well.

XP is irrelevant if you can't buy anything with it. 🙂

If you're a regular mortal then even if you get 3-4 XP a week (which is a lot) you still won't keep up with a single enraged Uratha or Gangrel.

For mortals spreading that shit out is all you can really do. Having influences, maybe multiple hideouts, alternate identities... just trying to desperately stay a step ahead of an opposition which outclasses you in every conceivable way.

Double ... For what its worth, I'm feeling over the abundance of comic genre and zombie genre and supernatural genre stuff on TV, if this heralds in a few more fantasy series in the end. Then I'm grateful they got in the dragon stuff and some of the magic and the general populace has taken to it in droves, could get a few more things out there I'd like to see in TV series format.

What worries me is this kind of stuff costs a lot of money and sooner or later there will be a bust. Probably sooner.

If you produce the next Vampire Diaries drama and it doesn't go well it's not a big deal because the fake fangs and colored contacts prosthetics aren't a big deal. Sink million dollars per episode into a Wheel of Time adaptation that doesn't work and suddenly the producers' narrative will shift wildly into 'oh, the public is tired of fantasy, let's go back to cop show procedurals'.

Sometimes it's unavoidable that someone is going to get pissed off or disappointed.

When I was much younger and the online RP thing was new I fucked up. I had a character in a WoT MUD who was 'bonded' to a character he had married; that's a pretty tight IC relationship, both on an IC social and mystical level.

At some point my partner's player's RL husband needed someone to play with him and she volunteered. I handled it poorly back then - with the excuse that my only alt was greatly impacted and there was no way out that wouldn't fundamentally change the character.

Well, boo-hoo. I still had no right to protest, and I could have made it work in some other way. In this case the other player did have the excuse of real life obligations trumping IC ones but really... it wasn't needed.

At the end of the day characters are expendable, and if they are not because of the time investment then the problem is investing so much time in the characters in the first place, not the reason that investment didn't pay off. Spoiler alert: Past a certain point it never can.
