I am pretty sure most people operate between those two extremes but it really can just be about genetic strength of your enamel.

Yeah, it seems to be a genetic lottery thing. I had terrible oral hygiene when I was young and dumb, but even though I've got good habits these days I didn't have to pay for the sins of my past. My teeth are pretty healthy.

On the other hand I have friends who've been flossing and brushing twice a day since they were toddlers who might as well have their dentist on quick dial, which is so frustrating for them.

      @Ghost said in Historical MUSHes:

I don't see mushing surviving these concepts unless at the very least it's an invite-only MU where everyone knows going in that some players will be dropping N-bombs, but there's enough OOC love that the other players are well aware that it's a role and not covert racism spank-banking.

Not even that exception will work. Who is the 'license' going to come from ? For example as a white guy I can't just permit someone else to drop N-bombs even if I'm playing a black person on the MU*.

Ironically there's room for spank-banking (literally!) in sex-oriented MU* where that's kind of the point. I'd never be offended by just about anything on such games, and I couldn't tell you why.

@Auspice To be fair, the worst physical pain I've ever experienced in my life - bar none - was a cracked, infected tooth. It was near the back of my mouth and had it happen on a Thursday night when I lived in a small city for a while whose dentists were all going to a convention for the weekend.

That weekend. Was not. Fun. I couldn't sleep, I could barely function.

I suspect human life before reliable dentistry was not a lot of fun a lot of the time.

@Thenomain said in Intersectional MU* Community - Discussion:

What I'm reading here is that a "quorum of like minded individuals" can maintain a space if they have a vote of no-confidence on its current leader.

Worse - it can make a moderator depended on the current political climate to continue doing their job. So they'd be at the constant whim of the strongest clique (and there are always cliques) to enforce their policies.

@Killer-Klown I like this take because it makes us sound less like basement-dwelling antisocial nerds and more like brave pioneers who endured social ostracism for noble reasons. 🙂

    • Recycling characters

For the life of me I can't recall if we've ever discussed this but if not it's probably worth talking about.

How do you feel about recycling characters wholesale from one MUSH into another? I don't just mean reusing a general character concept ("I liked my Grey's Anatomy-inspired Mage so I'll do it again for this next game") but more or less the same PC, perhaps with the same name, possibly even including parts of their history and on-grid development as part of their past venturing into the new game.

Obviously stats would need to be different based on XP availability, House Rules or even choices made to account for their new circumstances ("Bob was already burned out defending the Invictus so he's a Carthian now").

What are the pros and cons of that approach? How would you - as potential staff, or faction-mates - welcome (or not) such PCs?

Does it make it easier or harder if there are multiple characters using that approach (say, a pack coming in together)?

@mietze The darkest timeline is at my current company which, as good as it is about many other things, is forcing us to wear button-down shirts, proper pants and absolutely no t-shirts.

We don't even ever have clients over here! Whyyy.

    • RE: If you work hard, son, maybe someday you'll RP

@egg Perception is important - just because you think everyone else is having a blast while you sit in a room that doesn't make it so.

As for RP isn't a reward given to those who deserve it. Sometimes it's simply a matter of having OOC connections.

Finally people boast - a lot. Even on MSB.

I wouldn't be part of this hobby (or run a forum about it) if I didn't enjoy it.

The pros need to considerably outweigh the cons if I'm to be part of something I'm not getting paid for. Period.

@Ghost said in Poll: Do I enjoy this hobby more than I don't?:

And while those boards have 3.2k(etc) posts, I think my overall point stands. As cathartic as bitching and venting may be, I feel that negativity reigns and that those particular boards are a symptom of a bigger issue.

This is a natural consequence of who is motivated to post and by what.

The constructive boards, debates about the nature of gaming, even analysis of TV shows - those take time and thought as well as a certain frame of mind. If nothing else I think it's pretty impressive we have had thousands of contributions for them as it is.

But the Hogpit is easy. People get on there when they are pissed off - which makes them super high motivated to get whatever they have to say off their collective chests - or someone else has already had something mean to say which they can rant about, offer their +1 or drop some F-bombs.

I don't much care for that noise but it's part of the hobby, too. At least it's happening where everyone can see it rather than over pages and behind people's backs. Either way I certainly don't think it's what the hobby is about, since if I did I wouldn't be part of it.

@Roz said in Game of Thrones:

I'm really enjoying the season but WHY does the show insist on trying to get me to find Tormund's behavior towards Brienne endearing or comedic???

I think it's 90% fan service. My guess is they didn't expect the relationship (?) to blow up in memes or the actor playing Tormund to become so popular on the internet - otherwise he really isn't that interesting a character. Brienne is literally the only plotline he has left, else I'd expect him to have been killed or not get a lot of screen time by now.

But yeah, he's totally creeping on her.

      • Game of Thrones Episode 3

      Yeah. YEAH.

      Lies.

      You don't have friends.

I have people I eat and watch movies with, and that's good enough.

Folks, whatever Arx-related drama there is here, please take it to a different thread.

Also please keep in mind this is in the Constructive category. Please don't take potshots and personally flame people - this is not the place for it.

@Auspice Yeah. Folks be really really careful around the internet until you get to watch major releases like that because people are complete assholes.

Needless to say spoilers on MSB will be nuked from orbit. If you need to create a thread to discuss it please do so but leave no doubt from the title and in the first few posts themselves that it can spoil things.

In other words use common sense and be considerate. We're all nerds here.
