@wildbaboons said in Wheel of Time MU(SH|X):

And I think I may have settled on theme (for the moment). Fourth Age, shortly after the Last Battle. Instead of basing it in an existing city, a new city is being formed somewhere or another from all the nations involved as a sort of nexus/UN deal with plenty of opportunity for world building for folks that like to do that, politicking for those sorts, and the more adventurous stuff as well

The time period sounds exactly right.

The city... I don't know that it matters too much. Book purists will want an existing city (Caemlyn, Cairhien, Tar Valon would all work) and more casual players probably won't care what the nexus is called.

Ultimately a few weeks in it shouldn't matter either way as long as the other pieces are in place.

    • RE: How did you discover your last three MU* ?

This is interesting. I mean it's hardly surprising this forum is being used as a game-finding resource when the poll is specifically addressed to MSB users, but it at least proves the ad threads here are being used for their original purpose.

Word of mouth is the strongest resource (as it should be) and I'm wondering how this applies, or can be applied, to recruiting people not for a MUSH but for MUSHing in general.

In other words other than systemic and technical changes we've discussed before, and which would be out of this thread's scope so let's please minimize that part of the conversation, what's a good way to bring potential new players to the hobby itself? How do we approach them? How do we sell what we do?

Not actually a movies review per se but it's roughly on topic.

Moviepass Unlimited subscriptions don't look so great any more.

LOL - have you actually tried that?

@wildbaboons Concealed from the player. So I just type +roll strength+brawl and the code spits the outcome back at me, that's my favorite.

How I Discovered my Last Three MU*: I was asked to help make them. So, word of mouth? Probably not what you meant.

    • How did you discover your last three MU* ?

The topic should be sufficient but just to expand on this, but I'm wondering how you actually discovered, say, the last three games you played on. Not how it should have theoretically worked, or how it should be, but where did you hear about them?

      So,

You have two votes in case more than one answer applies.

Two more non-poll options as well I'm curious about:

      • Did you hear about those games from an ad (i.e. some specific attempt to sell you the game, even if it was a friend going "HEY COME PLAY WITH ME IT'S AWESOME") or through discussions about those MU* in general which weren't trying to lure people over.

      • Were you looking for a new game when you heard or did it just happen to come up and it caught your eye?

    • RE: Good or New Movies Review

@jennkryst But reviews don't need to include spoilers. They can, but in my humble opinion it's the other way around - the default should be that they don't.

Also it's not like we're being unreasonable here and banning spoilers for months after something has come out. No one will fingerwag because you gave away the ending to The Lost Jedi.

I can sympathize with these people, I used to be that way. But I just don't think that's a very realistic expectation in this day and age

Expectations depend on the medium; if I'm on /r/movies then I'm asking for it. But MSB is one of those mediums we can control a little better, so why not do so?

Surely we can contain ourselves for a week or two, or if we can't, create a separate thread with clear spoiler tags and discuss things there, right?

    • RE: New Vampire Release

@ghost said in New Vampire Release:

IMO a major problem with WoD is that powers are too useful. Be it blood/essence/etc economy, one of the bad habits that comes from a lot of WoD is relying so much on powers that most skill dot selections are done only to maximize the dice pool for a power scheme.

I don't think functionality is the problem of the nWoD powerset per se. It's that there really isn't much depth to them; especially for the physical stuff you can really only increase how hard you hit or how hard you can get hit, and since the former scales up faster and outpaces the latter, it very often comes down to initiative rolls.

Inserting something like hunger will make players ask: "Do I want to use a power and risk becoming hungrier, or use skills to solve the problem?"

Now that is more like it. Interesting choices would be a great improvement. As it stands if you play a brawler there is simply no reason to not take Vigor - it'd be stupid - or use it at any occasion that even looks like it might be turning violent.

Making this a significant decision would go a very long way. More so for MUSH, perhaps.

V5 makes it a lot harder for players to cheese power use, humanity rolls, and behaving like vampires by linking power use to self control.

Again for MU* I want to see how we'll integrate these to become part of our culture instead of doing the same thing as before and either skipping or downplaying the different mechanics.

It took me longer than I care to admit to realize I had only taken one of my contact lenses out as I walked around the house in confusion, rubbing the eye whose vision was blurry 'all of a sudden' to try and clear it.

I'm interested, but at least until I see reviews of the final product I don't see the point in preordering (and unless I missed it there's no price incentive to do so, either).

2 1/2 hours of fanboy porn. I quite enjoyed it! Last Jedi made my back hurt, but this one I didn't notice how crazy long it was.

MVP seating is where it's at. Almost all cinema seats hurt my back after the first hour, but a reclining seat for an extra $5 or so is magic.

    • RE: Search Broken

      @faraday said in Search Broken:

It's not really that complicated, technically-speaking, it's just a PITA. Any time you have multiple tools working together you have a fragile ecosystem trying to keep them all independently up to date and working happily with each other.

That's my problem. If say, the search functionality was pissing me off enough I could just look into the code and figure out what makes it find matches so... badly. But then I'd have to make sure it continues to work when we update nodebb versions, future plugins, etc.

And this is with one moving part. Add more to the mix and it's a hard no.

Also keep in mind staying at the current version isn't an option for us - in the past templates broke because we weren't updating the platform.

    • RE: Search Broken

@faraday To be honest a Discord server linked directly from here, and with a bot keeping users up to date on new posts on that side could work.

My only reservation is that I don't want to have to be responsible for or police one more thing as well, especially since our local trolls find their way there. And there's no way I'd enable voicechat on one either way 😛

@surreality I'm not sure nodebb is that bad after looking at other options. We even considered thinking-out-of-the-box approaches such as Discord.

Frankly nothing I've seen at least is more geared toward having involved, sometimes deep discussions not taking place in real time than a forum does.

Also nodebb is pretty active. It will has and will continue to add features over time so things will likely improve going forward rather than regress.

There's not a single function/program/app that can convert this DB into something compatible with any other decent forum software? Not one?

I looked. But also other platforms are either even more immature (tee-hee) than nodebb, they're not free, or they don't have some of the built-in convenient features nodebb is actually great for (such as a chat).
