      Thanks for looking into this!

And @sockmonkey you'll just have to wait and see! 😉

      I'll upgrade over the weekend.

    • RE: What does Immersion mean to you in MUs?

@apos For me immersion means simply that I feel comfortable with the setting to plot a character's background, make plans, play that PC in the setting and not worry about whether I understand it or not.

At the point that intimate understanding of how the world feels and works becomes intuitive, and I only ever need specific points clarified, I am immersed.

Sorry for the wait @Apu (which is still your username 🙂 ).

This took way longer than it should have, but after bashing my head - and asking @Auspice to do the same - against this on and off for a couple of days since it kept insisting we didn't have permissions to do this. But my power!

So it turns out that's due to a nodebb bug that will get fixed in 1.8.3.

      And now you know!

. Let people create Momma's Diner if they need a place to have pancakes that's also about to get destroyed by Meteor Chick on the fly since no one cared about that place before and no one will after the plot runs its course.

See this is my issue with the lack of a grid, if no one cares about Momma's Diner before or after the plot then what is the point of saving it? The plot becomes just as much a random scene as any BarRP.

I'm not sure why that's your issue with lacking a grid.

You don't care about Momma's Diner. You make it through a temproom, let Meteor Girl blast it to bits, arrest her, and move on.

@coin Also do you see Thanos being the kind of guy who looks back at his actions and goes "oh, yeah, I guess I was in the wrong there"?

He seems the type to double down. He's be that guy for sure.

But also to the earlier point, I'm happy they didn't go for the Death angle since it'd also kinda cheapen his motivation. The guy killed his fucking daughter (oh and half the universe), so he might as well have done it because he thought it was the right thing instead of just trying to impress a girl.

@sg said in Infinity War [SPOILERS]:

@arkandel I guess my issue is that the comics already had a solid motivation, Thanos was nuts and in love with an abstract concept. They really didn't need to change that for the movie.

If they had gone with Hela I'd have been fine with that. Or if they had mentioned a different avatar of Death before in the MCU, same deal.

But this was already a long-ass movie with a crap-ton of characters in it. They didn't need an extra major one, especially coming out of nowhere and whom they'd need to explain.

    • RE: Infinity War [SPOILERS]

@sg Yeah, this can be chalked up to the Matrix's reasoning. Sure, obviously it makes no sense when you really think about it, but it still gave us a great movie.

Also Thanos doesn't need to be perfect. Lots of highly intelligent people in real history supported some really dumb ideas.

    • RE: Infinity War [SPOILERS]

This is from a post I made elsewhere but it might make for a fun shitpost here. 🙂

So let's assume things had gone different in the movies leading up to Infinity War. Let's say the villains had reconciled with the heroes, maybe because Thanos' attack started early and they wanted to avoid becoming culled along with everyone else.

Could they have turned the tide?

      • Asgard. Would Hela have been enough if she hadn't annihilated Asgard's defenses, standing with her brothers against Thanos (who we could then assume had multiple Infinity Gems but not all of them) ? What if Odin was around as well, would it have been enough?

Alright, fine, and Malekith as well.

      • Earth could have had multiple additional villainous defenders. Aldrich Killian, Hydra's Helicarriers, The Ancient One, Killmonger and Iron Monger, even the Abomination could have lent a hand.

      • Could Ego have taken Thanos out? Would he have been enough? What if Ronan stood with him along with the Guardians of the Galaxy?

      • Honorary mentions but irrelevant in this context are bad guys who wouldn't care to stand against Thanos. Ultron would want him to snap twice! And Dormammu... well, he's probably even worse.

I'm also leaving out X-Men villains since they haven't joined the MCU officially yet. If you want though feel free to toss in names like Apocalypse or Magneto to the fold.

      What do you think?

@coin Well sure, but for example if I mention Hulk smashing Loki in Avengers 1 no one can reasonably complain.

So the question is basically "what is reasonable in this context?".

This has come up before but we can probably use a policy on it. Give your input, MSBites!

Also what's a good punishment? I don't feel banning people is appropriate unless it's truly malicious and intentional. Enforced signatures? Lame avatars? 😛

@lithium said in Interest check: pure OC superhero game:

Easiest way to deal with leadership is just to have a command structure baked in. This person is team lead, so long as they are available. Then this person is second in command, unless they're not available, so on and so forth.

Even that has been known to break down because the problem typically isn't IC, it's OOC.

So I'm off for a week and since you're playing the second in command you make some decisions while I'm off. Once I'm back I see them, get threatened by it, and pitch a fit about it.

    • RE: Big city grids - likes and dislikes

@kay said in Big city grids - likes and dislikes:

I thought I should split this into its own thread, since the big city is a popular setting for many games.

I plan on having my superhero game set in a bustling metropolis. I am looking for input on what kind of grid set up you guys like and dislike. What makes it easy for you to get around? What makes it easy for you to get immersed into the game? Pet peeves? Pet favorites?

      Two cases.

      1. If geography really matters in your game. Maybe it's about resources, or an ongoing turf war, or power pylons granting different powers to those who live near them... whatever it is, if it matters, then you need to plan out a real grid and keep track of who's where doing what. Then each square is a RP hook for someone to take over, monitor for their enemies' presence, etc, and it represents opportunities for scenes.

      2. If geography is just a generic thing (people live in this huge city, and while there are X hospitals and Y police stations but overall it doesn't matter terribly much what else does) then a small grid with temp RP rooms works best. Let people create Momma's Diner if they need a place to have pancakes that's also about to get destroyed by Meteor Chick on the fly since no one cared about that place before and no one will after the plot runs its course.

@saosmash That's the problem. YMMV but when admins are asked to intervene then it's our standards that decide what gets to stay where.

It took about two minutes from when I moved a thread today to being accused of picking sides, and that's on an issue where if you asked me right now what it was about I wouldn't be able to tell you.

@faraday said in Hello MSBites! Grade your administrators.:

I can only assume the mods are aware of it since they've been posting in the thread. And if people haven't been flagging posts like mad, that says something too about what the community is willing to tolerate. (I didn't flag personally because I was just curious to see how far it would be allowed to go.)

That's not a good assumption to make. I won't speak on Gany and Auspie's behalf but personally I only really read through threads that interest me, and the best way to ensure I skim through one is when it's filled with GIF memes. So it's quite possible that when I post on a popular thread it's for a specific part that caught my eye and that things might have fallen through the cracks in the last 6 pages this past hour (which happens :p).

Also... even if we first read something we might not think it through at the time. If General You think something doesn't belong, tell us. The only reason I ever mind seeing flagged posts is if the reports are getting weaponized to settle personal grievances, else what's the worse that can happen? Maybe something gets flagged that we decide isn't so bad and we ignore it.

Or something is bad and we do something about it. Tell us.

@aria Well we didn't go backwards in time and do it retroactively! We started doing it a couple of weeks ago when that guy started spamming accounts and raged at Auspice.

FFS. Can we just get a "This motherfucker, AGAIN?!" gif added to the library to post every time he pops up with another annoyingly trollish and probably racist thread, so I don't have to look at the dumb shit he has says for more than a few posts?

If it helps, we do delete all posts made by repeat offenders (okay, so we only have that one repeat offender) so they don't litter the place unnecessarily.

@packrat said in Interest check: pure OC superhero game:

Also depending upon the nature of things, there is no reason to assume that big power superheroes would be terribly effective against a city just being shit.

I see no inherent reason superpowered individuals wouldn't be at least as effective at any other form of crime as street level ones on a game, especially on a MUSH, and particularly if there's no systemic hurdle (i.e. artificially created by the creators) for them to overcome.

Was Luke Cage worse at fighting the Hand than Daredevil in the Defenders? Could he not deal with corruption in Harlem just as well in his own series? And yet he can knock down walls and throw cars around.

You can say this is just because of how he was written, and it's true, but remember that on MU* people always want to be able to do more, not less. You'll see street-level reimaginings of Superman wherever it's possible, able to tackle both that giant robot and the colorful pimp next door.
