@Pyrephox Of course, and I mentioned that. But read the last paragraph - what those players want affects you.

My theory is he's practicing his coding skills 24/7 so he can bring WORA back.

RE: Kinds of Mu*s Wanted
@Pyrephox : And that's fine! The only thing is, most players are looking for something they're at least vaguely familiar with either in terms of mechanics (i.e. an established RPG implementation) or theme (borrowed from books, video games, etc).
Now, in some ways that even makes sense as you know what to expect from the setting, its quality is high on average since these are properties written by professional writers instead of hobbyists and of course we as players are also fans of certain ones. But that's not something you should be concerned about since obviously you can want other things.
What is a concern is that since 'most players' go elsewhere that leaves other unique games be both small, niche and relatively not advertised through word of mouth. MSB or TMC can help but it's quite likely there are gems out there, well ran and coded little games we've just never heard of which eventually die down because their creators give up on them at some point if there are only a handful of players on at any given time.

RE: Kinds of Mu*s Wanted
It sounds like a Dresden Files MUSH might be up your alley then. But the go-to themes for urban MU* are usually intended to be bleak rather than the opposite.

That doesn't leave me with a huge feeling of security regarding this new project. I love what they do, but I don't want to invest the time in it if one day it's just going to be randomly shut down, at least from the players point of view.
How long was the game running for? (Not a rhetorical question, I don't know).
If staff has been running a game you liked for say, more than a year, and they've been active in that time that's a pretty impressive span of time. Would you begrudge your friend running a great long campaign in their living room for ending it because the circumstances of their lives changed?
Enjoy it while it lasts, and make sure to say thanks. Security doesn't play into it unless the game summarily shuts down a month in. We're not owed anything.

RE: Where the hell is everyone?
Barring specific exceptions (bad staff, the MU* shut down, etc) my experience says people in general leaves games for one main reason: Inactivity. They log on, nothing is happening, they log out and stop trying. If KD utilizes these new numbers by populating opposing factions to encourage political dynamics that won't be an issue.
Now granted there is still reason to be cautious - KD only has two staff members and getting an influx of people can be extremely demanding on their resources. More so since/if some of them already have baggage, drama carried over from their previous games which resurges now, etc.

RE: Where the hell is everyone?
This is pure speculation on my part so please take it with as many grains of salt as you will, but the numbers of people I've seen hitting Kushiel's Debut lately are pretty impressive.
I'm inclined (this is the speculative part) to think many of them are refugees from nWoD MU* looking for a new home; with the games in the genre either getting bad press (TR/FC) or being reported as pretty inactive (Reno/Eldritch) there could be a migration. And since KD in particular is using nWoD 1.0 rules, which many of those players are already pretty familiar with and easy to use, there are few other barriers to entry; since people who make a transition tend to bring their friends over - who have friends of their own - this could be a thing.
If that's the case, and if such new games manage to retain those players instead of them simply giving something else a try before reverting back, we might eventually see the prevalence of WoD in MU* diminish.
... If it's not the case then it's likely because I'm wrong, and it'd be far from the first time that happened.

RE: RL Anger
Speaking of all that, have you heard of this?
TL;DR: The story claims a company made the 1/3rd pounder burger to compete with the quarter pounder burger but it failed because people thought 1/4 was larger than 1/3. I mean 4 is larger than 3, right?

A lot/most of those 'suggestions' are just to cover their asses.

RE: Location, Location, Location: Where Do You Want to See Games?
Settings, much like characters, aren't self-driven. A great concept on paper still has to be developed so it breathes on the grid - and that takes work and maintenance.
As long as you don't pick a place that's somehow... wrong (say, a town too small, or some country most western-world players can't related to and don't know much about) location is irrelevant. Active, creative staff and players are what makes it work. Set it anywhere you want, it'll work or fail on the merit of how well it's taken care of, not if you picked Seattle over Cleveland.

I only know of two people I flat out avoid, because of legit crazy/stalker tendencies, in the over-a-decade I've been at this RP thing.I've only a couple reasons I don't avoid people (and I'm not prone to do so for many, it's too much work - which is probably a reason on its own right
).

We're likely to have common friends and I'd rather not miss out on having fun with folks I like because of ones I don't... it seems counter-productive.
-
Alts and internet anonymity being what they are I'd probably run into them again somewhere without realizing. Paranoia isn't conductive to having fun.
As long as they don't actively make an effort to keep me involved in whatever it was that annoyed me in the first place it's all good.

RE: Kushiel's Debut
I do greatly appreciate already knowing the system but that's because usually learning new mechanics isn't something I look forward to.
One thing I noticed though while filling out the sheet is that, without all the supernatural stuff as XP sinks, you can get a ton of milage out of relatively few XP totals.
If anyone wants to associate with my new PC's House (when he's approved) or if you're shopping for a place with room to grow which isn't already packed with people feel free to PM me.

RE: Where the hell is everyone?
I'm there, waiting on approval. It's pretty slow right now (I'm told it'll need to be next week) but then again it's Thanksgiving.
While waiting I'm re-reading the first book... damn, 1900+ pages on my Kobo. I can barely remember much of it either, it's like a brand new novel at this point.
