@arkandel Just so long as changes like this are also documented in Announcements and not just left to being a reply on a thread someone might never find.

Done. Apologies about that, I didn't mean to bury the response. We'll see if the measures so far are sufficient.

      I use Potato.

But SimpleMU is my favorite. It's just now reached the point that most games take advantage of colors too much to stick with it. 😞

I dread I might lose my registration key which I bought back 1825 or so one day. Or that a Windows patch might break the whole thing.

No other client has windows spawns working just the way I like them to.

    • Change in the Ad section

For visibility purposes, I made some changes to the way game advertisements work.

Recently active ad threads were forked; the initial post remained in the Ads section while the rest of the posts were placed in the Mildly Constructive forum under their own thread.

It's going to be the way we do it going forward, at the very least until we do have a wiki going. Please refrain from replying to the Ad threads directly - use the discussion ones instead (or create a new one if there is none in the Mildly Constructive or Hog Pit forum categories as applicable).

Any posts replying to an Ad thread directly not made by either the original poster or a staff member from that game will be moved to an appropriate thread instead.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

I know most new year's resolutions aren't going to be followed. Everyone knows this.

But dammit it'd be nice if companies didn't capitalize on it to take out even the hope we'll do something good for us to squeeze an extra buck out of us.

There are at least two ads on the radio on my commute that seriously grind my gears - one of them a BBQ restaurant chain literally going "you COULD go to the gym but that's hard! But you know what's easy? Our all-you-can-eat wings!" and another saying "your diet plan can wait for another month, try $4 for 5 chocolate bars!"

      Motherfuckers.

This all reminds me of a McDonalds ad last year which literally went "you could pay $10 to go to a museum... but that's boring. Have some McNuggets!".

We can let ourselves down quite well, dammit, we don't need help telling us it's okay to aim super low and we'll fail anyway so why even bother?

@paris said in criticism not allowed in ad threads is only enforcing a false positive, prove me wrong:

@arkandel I'd be happier about this if you leave update posts by the thread originator-- I'm not speaking for bot, but horrormux goes through a theme change every couple months, and archetypes open up between stories. Being able to update that and leave posts there would be convenient.

      That's what we're doing.

The only people allowed to post on Ad threads are the originators (or staff working for that game, but if I find out they're not authorized to do so things won't be pretty for them). They can edit the posts, respond to them, anything they like.

Everyone else who wants to comment about those games needs to do so in the game's corresponding threads elsewhere (Mildly Constructive, Hog Pit, wherever).

To add more tyranical news to the mix, apparently locked threads can't be edited by the OP either.

So I won't be locking such threads, but just (?) forking any posts made in them directly over to their corresponding discussion threads... but please refrain from making any such posts unless you're the OP and you want to signal actual news (i.e. "the game is now open!" or whatever).

See why a wiki is better, g'dammit?

@auspice said in criticism not allowed in ad threads is only enforcing a false positive, prove me wrong:

Based on a comment made at one point of 'waiting to hear back from <a thread owner>,' I believe Arkandel was asking the game owners if they wanted their ad threads locked down to just the ad post and the discussion moved to a new thread. I don't think he's just going ahead and doing it without go-ahead.

Double post! The comment was about nodebb not providing a convenient way to fork only the original post of a thread but you need to manually click on every other post to fork them into a new one.

Since the HorrorMU thread was pretty active, and recent, I asked Botulism if she didn't mind making a 'new' ad thread instead, which I then locked, and moved the original thread to the Discussions forum. It was really all just basic housekeeping - and how we're doing this going forward.

I mean, sure, but even with piracy, these companies make money hand-over-fist. I mean fuuuuuuck, Game of Thrones is the most pirated show in history and they're still spending exorbitant amounts of money on it.

I'll be honest here. I have no idea how companies like Netflix quantify how successful a show is or how it contributes to their overall bottom of line.

For example if you make The Last Jedi you pay $X, you make $Y, and if Y is sufficiently more than X then yay, you're good to go!

How the fuck subscriber based stream providers can tell it's worth it for them to create big budget films, award winners etc... that's all a mystery. Part of me suspects it's trial and error, or maybe the profit margins are just that huge, but...

Hold up, I'm noticing threads being locked up and discussions popping up, so a conclusion was formed but no official word with an announcement as to the new way we gonna do things? I just care about transparency here is all @Arkandel

I made a post about this in this thread but it probably should have been somewhere more visible than that.

Recently active ad threads were forked; the initial post remained in the Ads section, locked and editable by their originator, and the rest of the posts were placed in the Mildly Constructive forum under their own thread.

It's going to be the way we do it going forward, at the very least until we do have a wiki but possibly after that too (although I'll look for a way to dynamically tie the locked ad threads into the wiki content in that case, since @faraday had a point in saying she wants to check one place for content instead of two).

      @coin said in Good TV:

I mean, it was only a matter of time.

It's also short sighted. The biggest hurdle to piracy is always convenience, and piracy is absolutely the biggest threat to content providers, especially the ones relying on very expensive content to draw people to their service.

So for example let's say you're Netflix and you spend $$$ to make Stranger Things. That's the kind of show you expect subscribers to be lured by, and then stay for the rest of your stuff. Finding this show online is very easy but it's still easier and more convenient to have a Netflix app on your phone and the content is just waiting for you, keeps track of where you left off, suggests similar shows based on your watch habits, etc. Same thing as Game of Thrones, Westworld, etc.

If it becomes too expensive or annoying to have 5 different apps to watch all your stuff then Android Box or your torrent client becomes a more attractive option, and given the budget of these productions they can't afford to miss out on subscribers. Even reduced subscriber growth (let alone loss) can be disastrous when you spend that much money on a small number of shows.

@kanye-qwest What I begrudge is that the way things are shaping with streaming services starting to fragment we'll back to square one again... basically exactly like cable, but with services like Netflix, Disney, HBO, Amazon etc instead of channels and bundles.

It was great while it lasted to pay $12 and get nearly everything under one interface.

@bored said in criticism not allowed in ad threads is only enforcing a false positive, prove me wrong:

So the mobs will exist. The only place it really matters is in terms of the mods taking that sort of 'public opinion' as having any meaning. Which is why (bringing this thread back to topic) we do want guarantees of being able to voice criticisms without being shouted down by the cheerleader squad for any particular game, just as much as we want safeguards against mob attacks being too vicious in non-designated areas.

A couple of things about that.

For starters there are no guarantees anyone won't be shouted down by someone else. The only question is whether it's personal (which outside of the Hog Pit is not acceptable) and if those shouts are correct - a lot of the time people who are quite eager to point fingers and raise hell about others prove to be much better about dishing it out than taking it when the table turns.

But also - and this is frustrating for me - this is not WORA. WORA has been dead for many years, it was being ran by different people, had different rules and it existed in a different time. I will take any criticism at all at face value but, dammit, please don't throw that in my face; it's like me complaining about something @Goldfish is doing in Echoes in the Mists by referencing the shitty things staff did in Haunted Memories.

Of course a lot of us carry baggage. Some have enmities going back a long time and there are definitely multiple cliques carried over from MU* both active and long gone. But we are also adults, dammit, and we can own our own shit; we can change if we decide to, we can improve if someone points out a way to do it and now and then we can say "okay, sure, I don't like you but I was out of line there and I'm sorry".

I have a lot of fun chatting with you people about all sorts of random shit, both MU* related and otherwise. I would miss many of you, including some I'm pretty sure don't care for me very much, if we didn't hang out somewhere much like MSB, if for no other reason than at the very least you all understand where I'm coming from.

I've spent too much time in this weird hobby and the only people who can really relate to it are you all.
