I also think it may be time to officially made the Ad thread ads only. No discussion whatsoever. Want to discuss a game? Put up a Hog Pit thread (for the down'n'dirty) or a Constructive thread (for the random chatter). Keep the ad thread for details (the ad, any updates such as big events, opening of new spheres or OCs etc) only.
      How's that sound?

Eh. I kind of like having general-overview sort of comments about the game from others. I also think that it's valuable to have Staff answer some questions about the game there in the ad thread (system, CvC or CvE focus, Can I Have A Gold, etc). I agree that it's really easy for them to get derailed, and it may be more effort moderating them than it's worth, but I think it's definitely worth something.

I've been kind of going back and forth on this. A lot of the time the 'innocent' questions either become a derail into unrelated discussions/theorizing or are used as an underhanded way to attack the game/genre.

It may be better served if instead people PM'd the game-runners or tagged them in other threads (the Constructive thread for the game) with their questions and then the game runners updated the main thread with an FAQ.

This might be a more focused model. And then, instead of people scrolling through four pages of back-and-forth, there's a quick FAQ right there to look at.

    • RE: Things We Should Have Learned Sooner

This doesn't apply to a lot of us, but some.

Your education is for you. Don't (always) suck up to your instructor.

I had to analyze a poem a few months ago for a class. I dislike poetry in general, but this one was downright bad (IMO) and I made my opinion known in what I wrote. Not only did I end up with a 100% on the assignment, my instructor thanked me for my honesty and asked if she could use my essay as an example for future classes for both my analytical approach and my honesty about the poem.

Some instructors, yes, will totally let personal bias affect grading. You can usually see them coming from a mile away. But if you are told to write based on your view of something, then damn well do so. The education is for you, not for them.

I had to write a 'professional-quality' review of a movie this week for class. I thought the movie was garbage. You better bet your ass I made it known. So what if my classmates wrote glowing reviews. Maybe they thought it was great. Maybe they're trying to suck up to the instructor. I thought it was garbage. In the end, this education is for me and me alone and I thought Insidious was utter drek as far as horror films are concerned.

@auspice I am still of the opinion that the Advertisement thread should be an initial post by the author and then locked, so the initial poster can edit it but no discussion about it. Put the discussion in other topics.

So I thought about that, too.

But I'd want other Staff on the game to be able to post, too, y'know?

And it to not just be one single big BLAH of a post.

So that a Staffer can come in and say:

      "We just opened OCs!"

      or

"We released Geist!" (I just really want Geist 2.0 okay hush)

      or

"We're having a huge plot next week!"

      or

"Here's a handful of new questions that have been answered..."

and if we're more heavily moderating, the three of us could go in and pluck any non-'official' posts in an ad thread and move them to one of the other (Constructive or Pit) threads as appropriate.

And as noted, there can be a post in the thread with links directly to related threads. Like say I put up an ad thread for Pugmire: The Hydrant. Then someone launched a Mildly Constructive thread to discuss Pugmire: The Hydrant and someone else launched a Hog Pit thread to discuss how much they hate Pugmire because surely it's just gonna be a bunch of yiffing.... one of the moderators could then go in and add a post on the original add thread linking to both the Constructive and Pit threads (indicating which is which) so that people can go and see that discussion.

From there, myself and any Staffers could add new posts in the Ad thread ("Hey guys, Cats are now allowed!" "Hey we're launching a new chapter in the metaplot next week, now's a good time to go through CG!" "Here's a bunch of new questions we've answered in the other threads..." and so on), but people would have those and direct links to the other discussions.

I think this would help people who come to MSB for the ads, but also help keep things from heavily derailing and/or causing those ads to just end up off in the Pit (as they often do).

      Just posting here about this:
Had some hard think last night.

I'm about to go into a month of intense shit at work. I have a project I need to finish by the 15th for a group IRL. I'm stretched thin.

So I'm gonna try to catch up on stuff and then scale back from games that aren't SGM until the end of November. I'm not quitting (hence just a quiet heads up over here) and I'll be around on weekends to RP with those that need it, etc.

If you do absolutely need something on one of my chars, toss me a message and we'll sort it out. I just need to get shit did without stressing out.

This puts into words something I got a strong feel from with Dragon Age, thank you.

People would ask 'Oh did you-'
'No, what are you talking about?'
'When you were in X town, did you <thing>?'
'No? Should I go back an-'
'Oh, no, you had to do it at a very specific time. Oh well, you can do it next time you play. It's pretty much ruined now.'

.......so it's an open-world game where I have to do things in a very linear way to get the full effect. Thanks.
I don't want to play with a walk-through open to get the 'best' effect out of the game. I almost never play games a second time through. I don't have time to play games a second time through.

      Dual post...

...also got a 100 on my other final project in that class which was to outline a horror movie (oh man did I stress out and bust my ass on that one so WOOOOOOO!).

...which means I came out of my horror/mystery course with A FULL ONE HUNDRED.
I've gotten a 95-or-better on most of my courses. I think only... 3? in my degree program so far have fallen below (and 2 of those have been 90-95 while one was a B).

But this is my first perfect 100.

      I'mma celebrate tonight.

CPunk 2077 is everything I could have hoped for.

Like, from the get-go, I was super pleased. This is non-spoiler-y as heck, but:

Makeup options in video games have always sucked. Like they always look SO BAD. Like a 5-year-old trying on her mom's makeup bad.

But the makeup options in CP2077? Look good. There's good variety. They're designed well. Hell there's awesome nail art.

I should sleep. I need to sleep. But the game, she calls to me.

      @faraday said in Original Sci-Fi?:

      @auspice said in Original Sci-Fi?:

But yeah, the technobabble thing is an issue and I think it's on both Staff and players of any game to foster an environment where handwavium is the norm.

To a point, but handwavium can be an obstacle too. Like, yeah, you shouldn't need to know detailed cardiology to RP a doctor, but knowing what's possible with the tech is important. And often that means knowing a bit about how things work so you can fill in the blanks between the things that are explicitly spelled out. Having one group of folks "handwaving" modern level tech while another group "handwaves" skin weaves and nanobots gets to be pretty darn immersion-breaking. At some point you have to stop handwaving and ground your tech in something players can sink their teeth into.

Oh, for sure. But we don't come down on people not knowing the specific names of drugs, exact dosage amounts, or the latest-and-greatest in medical discoveries on modern-day games ("oh em gee they introduced X last month you should know that!").

So there is a grounding, yes, but the handwavium comes in not needing the fiddly details.

      Truefax:
In school, we had an assignment to take a myth and re-write it set in a different era.
I took the story of Thrym stealing Mjolnir and Thor dressing as Freyja (fun story since it shows the Norse saw a man dressing in women's clothing as nbd) to get it back and set it in the 80s in Miami. It was set in rival clubs and Mjolnir was a keytar.

Would 100% be tempted to write a version of Thor like this on a MU.
People would hate me and I wouldn't care.

      I love my cat.

Like she is the best cat.

The coolest most awesome cat to ever fucking cat.

I mean sometimes she's a butthead, but I love her. So does everyone else that knows her. I mean seriously, how many cats receive gifts from other people? (My friend gave her one of those cat water fountains a few months ago. ...I'd say she refuses to drink from anything else, but she learned how to turn on the kitchen sink last week.)

    • RE: Good writin'.

      @A.-Meowley

What you described is really about on point.

Wait a round or two. See what's going on. Pose into it. Is there a party going on? Join the party. Is there a quiet conversation? Walk into that.

Imagine what it would be like walking into that setting IRL and pose accordingly. It's not as difficult as people make it out to be and I think you're already very much on the right track. You may be overthinking it because you see other people flubbing it up so majorly and you're worrying too much that you might be, too. And I'm gonna say... I doubt you are, since you see the problematic people, too. 🙂

Because, yeah, you've seen those people and they're a peeve. The person who is not seeing the eldritch horror and reacting accordingly. You're trying to pose your character and wondering why the ever-living-fuck Jane over there is giggling and flirting while everyone else is wigged the fuck out by the thing with twenty-eight eyes and forty tentacles.

      They're not visualizing.

That's the key: visualize. (Yes even if it means imagining the many-tentacled-beast.)

Visualize. 'Okay, my buddies are standing around the kitchen looking somber... Even if my character is running in in a great mood... these are her bffs, she's probably going to scale it down and realize something is up.'

      Another tip:
Even if I have very good reason to derail a scene (something happened in another scene and I have BIG PLOT NEWS to share), I will ask OOCly if it's OK before doing so.
