      Another work rant:

I like the guys I work with on 2nd shift. I liked the guys I worked with on 1st shift.

I cannot stand the guys on 3rd. There's the pretentious ass who is, I guess? threatened by not being the only one who knows computers anymore. Excerpt from tonight's passdown:

Me: 'They finally fixed <program we use>.'
Him: 'No. I fixed it last night.'
Me: 'They released an update for it. It's fixed properly now.'
Him: 'I fixed it last night. It just needed a tweak in IE.' (a tweak that IT passed down to us and I passed down to him the other day, but w/e)
Me: '...they patched it. It works in IE and Chrome again.'
Which set him to muttering that 'oh they probably just downgraded it' (which is also not what happened but whatever; I gave up at that point)

There's a guy who is blatantly racist. As in 'will complain about how 'bad' other races are and when it's pointed out that most of his coworkers are non-white, pulls the 'well they're the better ones' card.' He's also the one who, after not doing his damn job the other week, tried throwing me under the bus.

The last guy does his job, is OK to get along with, but is never. on. time. Every day he works, I know I'm gonna leave 15-20 minutes late waiting for him.

Which almost makes him the worst because it means I'm stuck sitting around with the other two guys.

Ohhh yeah. I forgot the SJ element.

      That'd be a tricky aspect.

@Sparks heh, I'm about half-way through Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka so this idea is ... creepily timely? ...

On an semi-related note, has anyone ever created a Girl Genius inspired game (does anyone know if Studio Foglio has an official position on such works?)

Knowing what nerds they are, I imagine they'd be all for it.

The problem is that everyone would want to be a heterodyne.
(Except me. I would totes pky a jäger. I've considered MMO RP just for the purpose of being a jäger-style orc somewhere. I mean come on they have the best hats!)

@Auspice Kids don't MU. We can be a super serious 18+ game based on young adult novels. There are no faults in my logic.

Oh. They find MUs. When they get banned on forums meant for the 9-15 range for continually engaging in adult content...... I know for a fact some discovered MUs.

I'm sorry (not really) but I'm basically twelve and I want a Warriors game. The one with the cats.

      I could never do it.

I moderated the official Warriors forum for work for a number of years. If I never see kids trying to RP cat sex again it'll be too soon.

@Auspice I'm currently in the middle of no where waiting on my car to be fit to drive. There's nothing around me! I drove with my mom through the nearest town the other day and it was still pretty barren. You're crushing my hopes of having better pickings in Austin, haha.

There's a lot of locations here, but I he algorithm sadly seems to have made most of them fortresses or greenhouses. I'm hoping in an update that gets fixed.

@Sparks said in Hosting and codebase recs:

It is not how I would recommend building a live-updating MU* website, but it's doable in Penn or TinyMUX. It is sheer hell to code, but it is doable.

You know there's a codebase that could do it better and long before Penn, Mux, or Rhost? Muck. Or Moo.

There's just a lot more support for the Mux, Penn, Rhost set. At least since Nuku went off to be a successful Furry RPG Game Company. 😉

Thank you for mentioning these. MOO gets a bad rap around here and is likened to 'just for MUDS,' but I began on MOO and every one I played was as RP focused as a MUSH/MUX.

MOO is an astoundingly capable codebase and could handle external connections twenty years ago. (I think fondly to our auto updating econ site for WNOHGB.... hell that game had a lot of code I'd still consider advanced. Programmable ship computers??).

But like many of the others: you gotta know how to code it. It's where teenage me learned any code beyond web shit, so I don't think it's too bad.

But if you want an out-of-the-box solution, @Alamias , like it sounds from your original post: Ares is the best option imo.

Third interview was yesterday. I think it went well. It was definitely more of a grilling session than the culture fit I'd hoped it'd be.

But, for once, I was able to look people in the eye as I answered questions. I'm glad to be past that anxiety issue at least.

Unfortunately the woman doing the hiring is now traveling for a few days so I just get to stress and wait.

@Sparks said in General Video Game Thread:

ETA: I should screenshot downtown Seattle tomorrow to show you. The algorithm is very favorable here; it's just a sea of different types of inns, with usually a greenhouse every other block or so, and pretty much anywhere you stand there's almost always at least one fortress only a block away. Anyone who's in downtown Seattle will not need to buy energy because you could just walk around for like ten minutes and refill. To be fair, though, back in the Ingress days people basically carpeted downtown Seattle with POI entries, and the benefits of that have carried on into PoGo and Wizards Unite.

I might be in the pool of people to blame for some areas being inundated with locations as I was an Ingress player 😉 (tho I began in SC)

But I used to go to the park in Bellevue, near the Pokémon offices. I am very familiar with how dense it is. 😄

And maybe that's part of my gripe! I know how it could be. Mox in Bellevue was great. A gym and two pokestops.

@Sparks said in General Video Game Thread:

@Auspice — Yeah, algorithmic generation of game resources is great, but it is not inherently balanced well for all locations. On the other hand, anything other than algorithmic generation of game resources (out of their POI database, I mean) is not even close to feasible for a game with a literally global reach, so...

In this case I think it just wasn't weighted very well and/or needs checks for 'how many inns are in a general radius?'

Because I only have a couple in my daily commute, but I have way more fortresses and inns.

I also wonder if it'd be possible to identify locations people might reasonably hang out at and weight those more with inns.

I was at a lady geeks event at the library near my house on Sunday and it had just a fortress: everyone present who is playing was vexed by that and few of them have found restaurants, cafes, etc. with Inns.

Heck the nearest one to my apartment is at an intersection almost a mile away. I'm uh, not gonna just hang out at a busy intersection. And I wouldn't want any kids to do so either!

    • RE: General Video Game Thread

See, I was assuming it was just to try to force/push people to spend money since Nintendo/Pokémon is fairly against money mechanics and makes them very secondary (it's been an actively stated goal for the Nintendo mobile games that they're trying to encourage kids not to spend money and when I worked with Pokémon on the online tcg, they were very adamant that it'd never cost money or have money options).

But HP isn't governed by the same rules, so...

This is the issue with the companies being based in these really major metro areas. I mean, Austin is a big metro area but the instances of locations dies off a lot outside of downtown. In PGo, I'm actively annoyed by how many raid locations there are now as compared to standard gyms.

    • RE: General Video Game Thread

In general, Wizards Unite is a better game than I expected (Pokémon Go with a HP skin did not appeal to me at all originally), but this energy thing is a huge problem.

There's no passive energy regen. You can only get more by buying it or visiting Inns. But not all locations are Inns. Some are fortresses or greenhouses. And those don't give energy.

My work has a bunch of locations around it....not one is an inn.
      My apartment has nothing nearby.

And I live in an urban area. I feel bad for people who live in more remote areas. I can't/don't play while driving and I work second shift (meaning my ability to just go somewhere and hang out is v limited).

There's just no point to me playing. As intriguing as the game is.

      I second Ares.
Digital Ocean is easy to use, inexpensive, and Fara has instructions on the install process.

If you hit any speedbumps (I did; turned out a change on DO required some tweaking of the install process), she is very quick to help and happy to do so. The Ares discord is a great resource.

If you decide to go with a different hosting plan, I have a friend who provides hosting and support for $5/mo. He can at least install things for you and add stuff to server cron, etc. if needed.

@Auspice I am early to everything, because growing up, my Mother would make sure we were late for every single thing ever.

      It's maddening, isn't it?
And with mapping programs and sites you know exactly how long it'll take to get there. But my father tends to leave like, five minutes before he has to be somewhere a 30 minute drive away. Because he convinces himself it'll be close enough.

I just thought I'd give a quick update for folks.

Things in SG Dev Land were a bit quiet this past week since both @Paradox and I were hella busy IRL. However, it was a busy that was accounted for and we're still on target.

I am really excited for getting to reveal this project in its entirety to everyone soon. 🙂
