      I picked up a freelance writing gig.

      I hate it. I am very close to going 'Look, I've already put over 10 hours into this. It's not worth $90 anymore' to the guy that hired me. Whoever he has as his 'editor' for the writers is a fucking idiot.

      Edit me for grammar. Edit me for phrasing. Edit me for legibility. But if you can't follow the bouncing ball of the topic and concepts like 'According to studies [link]....' have you whining at me 'We can't make unfounded claims!' (lady it's not unfounded the link to the fucking study is right there I'm not going to rehash the entire medical study in copy that's supposed to be 'lighthearted' and 'easily consumed' jfc) maybe you need a different line of work.

      If you're editing for content as well as grammar, you need to do the research on the topic, too.

      Not sure of how many folks know about this, but it might be something good in continued covid-times. I know a few people who have begun using it as a way to still play with people they can't do game night with.

      https://en.boardgamearena.com/lobby

      Tons of board games on their site. One perk is they have turn-based play, so you don't have to actively be at your computer at the same time. The site emails you when it's your turn to play. The benefit to our community here is letting us play games in different timezones.

      Yeah, really dodged a bullet there.

      Being only in a tiny private school and then homeschooled, I was super isolated.

      I wanted to do girl scouts! But my parents 100% bought the whole 'girl scouts will turn your daughter into a satanist lesbian' spiel and I wasn't even allowed around girls who were in girl scouts.

      TV and books were my escape (in so many ways) and where I found the people I aspired to.

      @Macha

      I kind of had to. I had a mom and grandmother who were super insistent that I needed to prepare to be a proper Christian wife and that meant learning to cook and clean and wear dresses and makeup and be subservient to men-

      I had to look for my role models elsewhere.

      My mother literally told me once 'If you don't learn to cook, you'll never find a husband.' I did later learn to cook for myself but at the time my response was 'If someone only wants me for my ability to cook I DON'T WANT THEM'

      ETA: considering my mother is incapable of keeping a house clean (not entirely her fault, her mother was super Type A and refused to even let her do her own laundry so she never developed even personal skill management in this regard) and is the worst cook I've ever personally known, I feel like she was probably the singular worst person to try teaching me these skills

      @Ganymede

      I never said they weren't there at all. I had some growing up. Ellen Ripley, Sarah Connor, Janeway... but the point is that it's not just men who are handed garbage people they're supposed to use as their audience model. Women get the same treatment.

      And often in super successful enterprises.

      And it sucks big time. 😕

      Keanu is awesome.

      And @insomniac7809 I did reference Bella, aka training wheels for teaching young girls that they should let men gaslight and abuse them

      we're all presented with garbage role models 😞

      At least Bumblebee gave us Hailee Steinfeld as Charlie instead of another Sam.

      If you ever wonder just how much contempt Hollywood producers hold for their consumer base, consider: they used Sam Witwicky as the audience identification character.

      At that time in our nation's history, Sam Witwicky was perfect audience identification character.

      "He's sexist, dumb, helpless, self-entitled, and a bully. Michael Bay really gets me."

      'He's a white boy who gets the hot girl.'

      I mean c'mon, look at all the women who imprinted on freakin' Bella in Twlight.

      Both genders are guilty and Hollywood (and authors and game developers and....) takes advantage of it. They throw in a white bread, boring ass protagonist you can pretend is actually yourself being the big damn hero who gets the guy/girl and people sink into the escapism like a warm bath.

      @LWhiskey My guess is @Caractus is a fascist trying to make anti-racist movements look bad. It's a common tactic of the far-right.

      I mean, my own guess is that he's the 4chan troll back again like, though in that case this all still applies.

      That was my immediate, knee-jerk sense based on the 'No one wants to play pretend' post. The 4chan troll always always always starts off with a post like that. A low-ball, shallow end of the pool, 'this seems harmless, but will still get people riled up' and then it's off to the races with the racism.

      I'm also offended this guy thinks the only reason people could be opposed to an app like that is 'you don't like black people having sex and would be OK with a WHITE WOMAN being just for sex purposes' (paraphrased)

      dude, spend like, a week on this board and you'll see we take issue with people trolling narrative-focused games just for sex, period. It's not the sex that's the issue, it's the 'fuck everything y'all are doing here, I got bored on Shang'

      I don't care what your race, gender, or sexuality is. If you barge into a narrative scene all 'HURR HURR IGNORE TEH BAD GUI LET'S ALL FUUUUUUUK' I'm gonna be pretty fuckin' annoyed.

      I regret clicking that link to the -- thankfully denied -- Arx character.

      Pretty sure this is the sort of thing people mean when they reference (mild or overt or straight up racist) stereotypes making POC on games look bad.

      Also: I doubt this is Cirno. Cirno likes to app unthemeatic (for non racial reasons) women.

      To be frank, that vague whiny 'people don't like to pretend anymore' post in gripes made me think this was our usual troll because that dude likes to make posts like that to bait people into conversation. If it is, the fact that he's apping on games is a new twist. The fact that the characters in question are racist depictions would be no surprise though.

      I picked up a handful of games in the Steam Sale so far (mostly cheap/silly multiplayer stuff like Tools Up, Witch It, etc), but also finally got Two Point Hospital and it is absolutely the winner. I get why people love it so much. It's relaxing to play. but also a lot of fun.

      @Wretched

      Apparently my spoken vocabulary is fairly extensive; moreso than I often realize. I got accused way too often by my ex-husband (and some of our mutual friends, even one who also considered themselves a writer) that I 'purposefully' used words they didn't know.

      And I didn't, I really didn't. I just used whatever words came to mind (and thus were right for the situation).
