    • GIF Uno (not for the GIF haters)

In this thread... post a GIF that has something to do with the GIF before it (in some way, shape, or form in your mind). That's it!

      To kick us off...

      (it's not a thread, it's a Tide ad.)

See I love posing /actions/ people can respond to, not stuff that is a barrier to entry to RP. They can easily look at my character and read what I look like, or if they know me, they have already done so and posing it over and over again can be... intrusive.

I feel like people respond to what people look like all the time, though. Moreso if it's something that's likely to stand out for some reason, whether because it just does, or because of context. Maybe you're in leopard print, hot pink, and wearing gold mirrored aviators indoors. Or maybe you're wearing a vintage Dior dress with pockets, which is always relevant.

Either way, I don't tend to have a description for every single outfit my characters might wear. The closest is on Arx, but even then people kinda skim and assume all kinds of things.

Yes people respond to what people look like, but there are /so many/ multi-descers out there that are /easy/ to use and manipulate on the fly. There's absolutely no reason to need to pose it every single time rather than set a multidescer up.

Well, generally my descriptions include the character's general sense of style and fashion, the kinds of clothes you'll likely see them in, not specifics. They don't wear the same clothes every day, but I'm probably not going to multidesc the entirety of their wardrobe in advance. I did once, but the character was a street rat, literally.

Double-post since this came in while I was writing. This, yes. This is why I write the single-line in my entrance pose. Because my main desc includes the general sense of style, so my main pose can be like 'Today s/he is wearing...' and a simple <blah> of what it is.

I include clothing in my poses. Usually my first pose. And usually it's only about a sentence worth.

That's not worth my time to deal with a descer. And if you're fussing over spaaaaaaam, people would be even more spammed to look at my entire desc if I'm going "BY THE WAY GUIZ MY DESC IS VITAL YOU NEED TO LOOK AT IT" ... when I could just toss out a single sentence / half-sentence in a pose.

And yes, that includes everyone seeing it again, because we're talking a volume scale. One line vs. the (considering my average desc length) 8-10 and considering I RP on average with only about 4 people max except on rare occasions. So even if I begin with just 1 person and 3 others join, the spam quotient is ultimately less if I pose 1 sentence of desc per vs forcing each and every person to view my entire desc.

And let's be honest, expecting people view your desc every time you RP with them is absolutely attention-demanding behavior.

I haven't given that one a whirl yet. It looks nice, the aesthetics of the creatures has just never reached out to me, unfortunately.

I suppose it's not for everyone, but taking down a massive robot dinosaur armed with machineguns and lasers is ... well, it is what it is.

It's right up there with Last of Us for why I want a PS4.

      Just wanted to share!
The following characters just opened (either idled out / didn't finish their app). None ever hit the grid that I'm aware of, so they're basically a clean slate.

      Ravager
      Batgirl
      Deathstroke*
      Joker
      Katana

*Deathstroke is actually restricted to current players as he's tied into the game's metaplot, so they want someone that's proven themselves to be proactive.

I've never gotten a character right in my head until I played him in at least 5-6 scenes with different people. It just takes me that long to stretch him out, see what makes him tick and experiment with different voices until one just feels like him.

This is why i hate writing backgrounds more than a couple sentences long. I don't know how they are, how they were shaped, until I get a chance to play them a bit

I love that more games are letting me write bullet point backgrounds. Let me write the high notes and fill things in as I play the character.

    • RE: Encouraging Proactive Players

The sort of negative person who puts me off of running is the sort of person who is disruptive to the whole process.

Someone who is negative or has a bad day once in a while isn't a big deal. Like you, @faraday. The times we've talked when you've needed to vent? That would never be an issue to me because you're proactive, inclusive, supportive: you provide value in immense ways.

The sort of person that I think @apos is indicating is... well, let me tell a story.

on Fallcoast there was this guy. Mage, playing a PI. From day one, he was off-putting to people. And I say day one because I remember when he was still in CG. Throwing fits on channel because Staff wouldn't let him be everything he wanted to be (and this was on Fallcoast where they were extremely lax in the rules). He wanted to be 21, a Detective, a college graduate, and a 'powerful Mage.'

      lolno.

But he wouldn't stop bitching on channels about how unfair it was that Staff wouldn't allow it to happen.

He'd drive people off channels with this.

He finally 'settled' for being 24 and a PI.

Later, I ran a plot for the Law sphere folks. He paged me asking if he could take part. I told him OK, but this is specifically catered to the law sphere (now I had a Time/Space Mage in my sphere, so I'd already written the plot to account for mages; I was OK on that front). I said: 'If you want an 'in,' work with these guys. You're a PI, it's doable, but it's on you to work it out with the other PCs.'

Yes, I should have said no. But I figured ok, I'm not just a player ST. I'm a Staffer. I should give this guy a chance and try to help him out, but he's asking me the day of the scene about joining in, so I can't adjust a lot, but I'll give him a chance and there will be hooks. It's happening on the street, so it'll be easy to walk up. The business owner could hire him (the guy sort of handed him his card and brushed off the NPC overall... )... etc etc.

      First round in:
OOC: Guy asks, "What's going on?"
Everyone else, OOC: "Uh, did you read the set pose?"
OOC: Guy says, "Oh I don't like reading those."

Continually, throughout the scene, this guy ignores my ST poses, then throws a fit when he's corrected. When the Law guys (the cops) take IC control of the scene and the PI waltzes up to them and goes 'Hey, you should give me the case' and one goes 'Well, give us your card and we'll call you if we need a consultant' (logical reply to a PI) he begins having an OOC tantrum.

One of the guys actually tried sitting down with him afterwards for a good half hour to explain why cops and PIs don't always get along and why his OOC behavior (not reading the ST poses, arguing with everyone, etc.) was problematic and all this guy did was continue to whine, complain, and have a general fit over how unfair it was that the scene wasn't adjusted and made to fit 'just for' him.

These, Fara, I think are the types of people Apos is referencing. The ones that are just overwhelmingly negative. This guy would have ruined me for STing for a while if the other guys didn't support me in return.

Wow, thanks for keeping everyone organized and enforcing timeliness,

I can actually recall a scene where I thanked a player for this specifically. I gave the PCs two directions they could choose to go in. I had options planned out for each. And all but one person spend two rounds just figuratively sitting on their hands. Even the PC 'in charge' ... wouldn't make a decision. No one would OOCly make a call. No one would ICly make a call.

Despite me asking. Despite me nudging. Despite me giving them all the details and hints and going hey, this is for you guys. This is for your fun. Either direction works, just pick one; each has fun stuff to do!

Until one player finally went 'Guys, let's just go this way. We can't keep just sitting around wasting time.'

      I thanked them profusely after.

Seriously, be the person who takes initiative, even OOCly. Take a poll. Nudge people. Be the helper to page the person that's still learning to help them out. Your ST will love you for it. They are juggling story and NPC/monster sheets and dice and...

High cholesterol, tho I'm imagining anyone even remotely overweight is in that camp.

Actually, no. Totally possible to have great cholesterol and be overweight so don't think you need to lose weight to get it down.

I have, thus far, been utterly unable to lose weight, no matter what I do. Dieting, nope. Exercise, nope. Medication changes and 'oh this medication helps people lose weight,' nope. Even tho my thyroid is being treated, I have hashimoto's and, well. often it'll just fuck you over in the weight dept.

Flatly skin here. As someone with bad eyes, the fact that the quoted text and the actual text are different sizes (and that the actual text has me punching the zoom up to 125 to make it legible) is painful. Not sure if that's a skin issue or something in the base CSS, but it'd be great if that were fixed.

Yeah, chances of us 'fixing' skin issues is slim to none. All I can suggest is going in and trying out other skins.

I can go out there and see if designers have made other skins for Persona (the nodebb default), but that's the best I can offer.
