      @miss-demeanor

I just didn't want it to come across as me being like 'how dare you be good at your job!'

It sucks sometimes. I actively try to slack off more because I've been that person and I then see other people struggling to keep up to what I can manage. And now here I am (because my ADD has gotten worse over the past few years and productivity demands are only getting higher and higher) struggling to keep up and it's just...

      It's fucked up.

@auspice My direct supervisor even admitted to me the other day that I'm doing a job that would normally be spread out amongst 2-3 people, with a few additional duties tacked on. That every other warehouse in our district? I would be only doing one of the three 'main' things that I'm doing.

All it ever takes is one person pulling it off and it gets held up as the gold standard. And I'm not disparaging you! But what you can manage isn't what everyone can. And management just refuses to see that in most cases.

And in my job, it's usually managed by people cherry picking tickets. They get so concerned about their numbers that they'll start skipping tickets looking for the easy ones. Which means everyone who works tickets accurately (in order, oldest to newest) has an increase in more difficult tickets because the easy ones are all being snatched up by someone more concerned about 'meeting numbers.'

I've been on teams where most of my team mates did this, leaving me with only difficult, time consuming tickets. So not only were my numbers garbage because every ticket took 10+ minutes... But I was also stressed out because every ticket was hard work.

So the 'multitasking' game has another dark side: it pits people against each other and not in an obvious way. No one thinks 'Hey, by doing this, I'm screwing over my team mates.' They think: 'My boss is yelling at me about numbers numbers numbers every week and this is the only way I can think of at this point to make up for it.'

This is is why, in every interview I've had, I've pushed the point that I focus on quality over quantity. And if that is why I haven't gotten those jobs? I'm fine by it.

I will admit, my job forces me to multitask constantly.

More and more jobs are expecting this, despite the studies to the contrary. Companies don't give a shit. They just know they can get more 'work' done with fewer employees and what are you going to do? You need the job.

And they make unreasonable promises to their clients, shareholders, etc., then pass the buck off to you.

I spent a chunk of time yesterday reassuring my team: 'I know we're being pressured to hit 12 tickets an hour, guys, but I'm not pulling it off, either.' (As team lead, the person with near-perfect QA, etc., I'm looked at as the person to emulate.) They were all really stressing out over this and one guy piped up how he didn't know if he'd be able to do it.

One by one, they all admitted none of them were at that number. So I reassured them hey, yeah, I've pulled it off maybe twice. Between ADD and the sheer number of tools and things we have to check, the sheer amount of multi-tasking (keep track of the client chat and the internal chat and...)... a ticket every 5 minutes? C'mon. Let's be real.

(And yeah, they want me at that number and I'm not even at my desk the full day because on top of working tickets, I'm also a team/office lead, so I have to: help people with their tickets, liaise with the manager, run down two flights of stairs anytime someone rings the door bell, etc etc...)

Multitasking is garbage, but it's become a required evil in corporate and I don't see it going away because upper management has found it as a way to get 'numbers.'

I'm starting to feel cursed re: deliveries.

Just ordered groceries. Now, I've had zero issues with Instacart in the past. Used it in Seattle no problem. Been using it here. Great service, no problems.

Until today. Big order (haven't bought groceries in nearly a month). It was marked delivered and... nothing.

At least they aren't giving me a hard time on having it re-delivered tomorrow. 😐

      Oh you can't.

That doesn't mean we shouldn't have it in some utopian future.

      The tricksy bit:
Discerning between 'who's posing' and 'who is chatting while waiting for others to pose.'

Figure that one out and you have gold.

I actually went a good few weeks without a migraine. It was nice!

Today I have one. And right after I had a lovely fibro-free, well-rested day, too. Go figure. I'll just grit my teeth through the workday, reminiscing about how lovely yesterday was.

(Here's hoping the emergency migraine pill works. They usually don't, but maybe today's the day!)

I'm trying the place out. Largely 'cause I've got a char I've always wanted to play.

+sheets are open, which I find swell. So far, the majority of people around have been pretty cool and Staff is friendly. I'm liking the vibe of the place so far. Will it be perfect? No clue. But I'm willing to give it a shot.

I agree, though for somewhat different reasons. I do log a lot of the time, and that indent in people's poses means I have to go through the log myself and fix all the indents before I add the log to any wiki. Which in turn, makes me less inclined to log.

It's yet another reason why I ❤ Faraday and her scene system. It ignores those indentations when it logs the scene. There's no need to go back and edit them out. So the tab-obsessives can tab away and I never need worry about having to clean up after them.

I metapose to an extent. Partly to tell story (it is a narrative!) and partly to help flesh out why my character is doing what they're doing. I can't perfectly convey expression or body language, but the metapose might help get some more of that across. So I try to balance a line. I won't ever get into the passive aggressive snarking at other peoples' characters in it (and I loathe when people do!), but I might use it to expand upon why my character is behaving a certain way. Why they're standing stiffly, why they're lounging noodle-limbed upon the sofa... because there's intricacies to form that we can pick up on IRL that may not always make sense in simplistic text without the other details.

So while I know some games of yesteryear were very draconian about NO METAPOSE, I use them because I feel they help expand upon why my character is doing what they do and I trust my fellow roleplay partner to be an adult and play to what they know (or could reasonably pick up on) and what they don't.

@auspice No, you weren't "talked to" about your activity. You approached us and said you were sorry, that you weren't trying to camp out on a character, but that you were very busy.

And yeah, I'm not a fan of huge scenes, either. Trying to follow everything gives me a headache.

Edited for clarity: I believe you brought it up on a channel, not privately.

OK. Might be a bit of misunderstanding, then! It felt like it may have been put out there that I was spoken to re: activity and I just wanted it to be clear that I wasn't. 🙂

Those were the main two things. It's not like I was constantly running around other places playing. IIRC, I think I was only really on Faraday's BSG game at the time (I can't recall any others, tbh) and it's never been very big or active.

Most people can tell you that even now, I get in probably 1 or 2 scenes a week and one of those might be a public one if I'm lucky.

      😕

      Ok.

      1. I was never once 'talked to' about my activity. Maybe talked about? I dunno, but I was never talked to.
      2. Every time I tried RPing except in scheduled private scenes on Arx, they blew up into big, unwieldy things. I couldn't handle that at the time (and still often can't now).

      @kitteh

Yeah, in the time I played there, I never got a single clue that wasn't weeks to months old. Made the system useless. It's why I got so '!!!! yay!' when it looked like I was finally going to have a chance to do a thing! and so disheartened when it went to other people. I just found there was really no place for me on the game.

It really is a place best, IMO, for people who have the ability to play every single day (and often many hours in that day) and me with work, school, and often migraines... it just did not suit at all.

    • RE: Coming Soon: Arx, After the Reckoning

I will be totally honest that the Nox'alfar stuff in Alpha/early Beta was the primary reason I lost interest in playing. I finally, with Mason's story and how I got hooked in on Lou, began feeling involved (because my investigations, no matter how hard I worked, never went anywhere)... but Mason's player at the time was good about keeping me in through him. And he was an important hook at the time.

So I thought, yes, I can get involved. Going out there makes sense for Lou. Finally! My character built for adventuring gets to do a thing! She's been sitting around bored, unable to do the thing she's made to do! And then oh, no, we all decided this other character similar to Lou goes instead. Sorry!

Took the wind right out of my sails. I went from 'I am all for this place' to '...oh.' So I really do get why new people are feeling like they'll never be able to find a place to fit in. It was really, really hard even back in Alpha / early Beta if you weren't constantly active / knew the right people.

Yeah, I'm a little confused by "there is too much focus on combat characters" but also "I don't like the idea of social systems based on my assumptions of what they are."

I've actually read it closer to:
"I feel there's a huge focus on combat that has needlessly complicated things and now I feel these new systems might needlessly complicate the social side and put up a wall that will make it even harder for newer people to achieve things while already established PCs will continue to dominate."

There is no way they'd ever say "that girl is overweight, she needs to stop eating sandwiches". What gives?

Not around you. You're a guy.

But trust me: they say this all the time.

      They do.
Or they find way to subtly nitpick the way you eat your sandwiches. Particularly relatives.

My mother, who after her weight loss surgery still weighs more than I do, is still trying to convince me that I should get weight loss surgery.

And I've been around the women who will try telling you how you should check out this or that fad diet. They may not be telling you directly to stop eating sandwiches, but they're telling you.
