But what Coin is saying is 'This stuff happens on statted games because they are statted.'
I'm saying I've seen it happen on a consent game.

I did not say that at all.

I said that shitty people will find shitty ways of being shitty regardless of context.

I absolutely did not say what you quoted above.

That's how your argument came across to me, at least, in the wording used. That statted systems enable people to be assholes.

My biggest thing, re: statted systems vs. consent games (because consent games are not systems, so the term does not apply) is where the power lies.

On the latter, the power lies in the hands of Staff and whoever has the loudest voice. Your meek players and those who are not comfortable approaching authority are at a loss. How many people have just quietly left games because they don't feel comfortable approaching Staff?

I mean, shit, I am the person other people come to on games because I'm that person who will just bullshit with Staff on channels and even I have just left games rather than deal with some shit because I've encountered Staff I can't find that level of rapport with. I know people who can never, ever find that level of comfort. Faraday, for example, is one of the most approachable Staffers you will ever meet and I have had to shove people at her and tell them it is totally okay to talk to her and that is on mundane, happy issues and not 'hey this person is being a problem.'

In statted systems, you put power in the hands of your players. You give even your meek, anxious, introverted players something they can hold onto. You give people a voice. You give them something concrete they can hold onto, they can point to, they can back themselves up with. You give your Staff a base to work off of in arguments rather than he-said-she-said and hoping a smart third party or a decent log is available.

I love consent for storytelling and I still engage in a lot of it, even in statted systems, but even then only for people I trust.

I disagree, but only because it can be switched.

In a full consent game, an honest staffer can't just, say, kill your character for no reason, or because they feel like it. You have the power to no-consent anything. Even if Mortiz tries to drop his Red Kryptonite plot and have Superman rape you because he's just soooooo craaaazy, you can say 'nope, not happening'.

In a stat system, if a staffer doesn't like the argument you're making and how you're using the system to back it up, they can (and will, in many cases) just House Rule that shit to the point where you're wrong, because that's not how it works here.

Again, context is irrelevant when we're talking about shitty people vs. decent people.

And yet, in the case that killed consent games for me, this is exactly what happened. I hit a situation in a scene with a staffer that went past my level of comfort. It would have ruined my character's playability. It made me insanely uncomfortable OOCly (anyone who has RP'd with me for an extended period of time knows that I can handle just about anything, too).

I called a stop and they refused. It was go through with it or be banned from the game.

I was given absolutely no option and cussed out.

So this is not the case at all.

Edited: I was not even allowed to request a FTB. I was told to RP it out or be banned. I have never, ever encountered that sort of shit on a statted game.

    • GTAV: FiveM

So @Jealousy mentioned this and I tried it out for a brief bit right before bed. https://fivem.net/

...it's kind of hilarious. I mean, awkward because it's an environment I am so not used to, but holy shit y'all.

I got run over. Your health is way lower (at least on the server I joined). You can't respawn for 5 minutes. To give PC EMTs time to revive you.

So these two PCs showed up, threw down flares. One walked around and the other like, kneels down beside me and is doing shit like:
      <name> checks for pulse.
      in chat.

again, I'm sort of like okay. This is a new... whatever to me.
      So I just put:
      <my name> bleeds.
<Them> looks for source of blood.

At which moment another fucking car runs me over and just blood everywhere from the legs.
<My name> definitely bleeds from the legs. Totally the legs. Yep.

I mean, ten kinds of ridiculous, but whatever. It's GTA, y'know?

I think so long as people get that I will never, ever take myself seriously, I might have fun with this. Just haven't decided if I'm gonna rage hard as a criminal or gonna try to join the cops to fuck with the criminals.

I joined the LARP server since it's fairly (about a month old) new.

... is anyone else gonna try this?

Even if I don't get the job I aimed for, I'm back up to my full 40 hours at work (without loss in pay) for at least through to the end of August. So no loss in pay.

...sadly doesn't help much with the moving costs as I was already being optimistic and factoring those in. So this is more a 'not getting fucked over' thing, but still yay!

I will note, however, the time I got treated the worst by a Staffer was the time I did say 'woah, too far' on a consent original-theme superhero game. >.> Like cussed-out 'omg how dare you not appreciate me' level.

But I used to be all about consent. Like once upon a time, I was like, a good 75% consent / 25% dice/stats person. Gimme story, gimme people who would work out story and telling it together.

...and then the assholes and their inability to ever see their character fail even once. Then superhero games and shit like 'Well, I don't care about your evidence from the comics. In my opinion, <Soandso> is and always will be the most powerful type of <character>, so you have to lose.'

And yeah, you get this on statted games, too, but at least there you have the system backing up your player STs. On non-statted games, player STs crumble even faster. I know even starry-eyed me was unwilling to ever venture outside of her circle of friends.

@Crysta It's a modded version of GTA V, so you would need the game on steam to play and the mod. But it's basically you and other folks are rping in the GTA V storymode world and you use your own voice acting skills!! (or not) to speak, as a microphone is required. It's a lot of fun and can be really hilarious when things go terribly wrong, like when you are riding in a van with 7 other people down a slope of Mount Chilliad etc...

They have coded jobs that you can do to make money among other things. I find it entertaining enough, but it definitely does not give me the same satisfaction of rping on a MUSH/MUX.

I was thinking of trying out Arx again, I was there very briefly a bit ago, and didn't do anything, to be honest. I'm also checking out The Fifth... Kingdom, I think it is.

      Wait. I need this mod.
      Tell me more.

Geek Chic went bankrupt. Which means that we won't be getting the custom game table we paid about $8K for. We will be getting our money back from PayPal and Capital One. But damnit. We saved for years to finally get one and we were supposed to get it in October.
Kind of silly to be angry about, but...there it is.

It's not silly. Those tables are basically board/tabletop game geek aspirational heirloom furniture (and beautiful, solid, durable furniture at that). Almost everyone who's gotten one spent years finding just the right spot, saving up, justifying it in their budget, etc. Having that snatched away at the last moment would be infuriating.

I definitely had one in mind for 'if I'm ever able to save up money,' so yeah. I feel you for sure.

Just rocked a phone interview for a place in Austin. Lady is positive I'll have the 2nd (Skype) interview. She gave me a bunch of advice for it and even began going over stuff like start dates and commute details; she's personally pretty sure I'm going to land the job.

Pay rate is a bit more than I'm making now. Health insurance would be (on my end) way less (which equates to more). It actually has paid vacation. Four week's worth! It's been over a decade since I had paid vacation and actually got to use it (had a job once since with it; had a week's of general PTO, but had to use it for the flu instead).

      ANYWAY. HOORAY FOR PHONE INTERVIEW.

Shout out to @Royal here. I love when people notice flavor shit.

Fallen World. My character opted to leave a scene right around the time a werewolf brutally murdered someone:

Meanwhile, Intrigue is already on her way to the warehouse. She goes to turn on the radio to find there's still one of the kid's CDs in the player. Some sing-a-long begins blaring. "...well there goes the mood." It's hard being a private investigator and a stepmom some days.

An eyebrow lifts ever so slowly as Cash shows Demetrius her magic trick. The departure of Intrigue is noted with a little wave of a .38 Special. "That is absolutely fucked up." Says the vile masque of the former Guardian. Then claws. Then blood. Then more and he tilts his head aside ever so slightly. "Hey, you think his watch is worth anything?" A glance down as blood runs down the mans arm, over the watch... Grail sighs heavily. Defeated. "Of course not."

Lemme just shed a tear. Thank you, man. I appreciate the acknowledgement of the blaring children's music as she left the parking lot. 😄
