I think Netflix or one of the services offers a thing where you watch a show with another household, and both of you can pause it etc, and you can then link up by whatever means to talk as desired.

Amazon Prime and Hulu both offer this. Netflix does not as of yet.

Covid has impacted me a lot more than I'd like.

I'm normally kind of hermit-y, but...

***=I ended up realizing this became less about coping methods and more a rant about how much I've struggled***

      click to show

      As an example:
Last week, from Monday evening to Sunday afternoon, I didn't speak to another person except the nurse when I got a flu shot. For nearly six days, I didn't speak aloud to another person in any meaningful way.

Pre-Covid, at least I was working and interacted with people at my job. I'd take myself out at least once every other week so that I wasn't trapped in the cycle of work/home. I did have a social circle (though the reasons for losing it are unrelated to covid and entirely related to my refusal to be around people who condoned transphobia).

On top of that, my last job contract ended right before covid hit and the new job I had lined up withdrew their offer. So I've spent ten months out of work. And I was doing all right with the federal unemployment bonus... then that went away and I limped along for a few months. And then the extended unemployment went away for a couple weeks. Some very wonderful people have sent me money ( ❤ to them) to help out and I'm rolled over onto more unemployment, but I'm still looking at a bank account well in the negatives (guess who forgot she had a car payment scheduled - THIS GAL) until it pays out sometime this week.

I keep telling myself it could be worse. I tell myself that over and over. I got covid. It was rough. But I didn't end up in the hospital. No one close to me has died of it (though people-close-to-people-close-to-me have). I still have a home. I haven't fallen behind too far on any of my bills.

But that hasn't stopped me from pretty much just sleeping and playing video games and wanting to bury my head under a rock until I can start the new job.

Which, y'know, that's what really sucks? Like, I have a new job! I should be more excited! But the past year has been so goddamn crushing that it's hard to be excited about it.

      so anyway
      uh
I cope by sleeping way more than I should and playing video games

    • RE: Good TV

I began watching Kaley Cuoco's new show, The Flight Attendant while (failing at) baking shortbread cookies tonight.

It is actually a lot of fun. And sort of how I imagine 'character who has never done anything remotely like this in their life begins investigating something' should go.

I'm kinda half-wanting to go on a WoD game, make a Mortal, and be the clueless idiot just throwing myself at the case in 'but I saw it on Dateline' ways for the first plot I come across.

@carma said in Interest in Cyberpunk MU*?:

With Arx, I have a big doc I refer to every time I have to type to do things. The commands are tedious to type and unintuitive to me. The help files are cryptic, and it just feels like a mess to me.

Again, Arx is not a good standard to judge all MUing by. It's its own unique beast. Because of the sheer number of systems it has (most MUs have much, much less), it has a ton of commands. And they've acknowledged their documentation isn't great.

Like @Wizz said: a lot of that stuff is hardcoded in.

The @ and + traditionally was to differentiate between soft and hard code. That's not as hard and fast a rule anymore, but it's why it existed in the first place.

You may have an easier time on an Ares game. Faraday has provided a 'qr' (short for quick reference) command. 'qr <whatever>' will bring up whatever matches your input. Can't quite remember the mail commands? 'qr mai' (not even the full word!) works.

I get that Arx is confusing. I have a hard time with it too, sometimes, and have to reference the commands list on the website. But it is not what all MUs are.

    • RE: Interest in Cyberpunk MU*?

@carma said in Interest in Cyberpunk MU*?:

@auspice I typed it in allcaps to show it's a command. I'm not vying for required allcaps. My suggestion is case insensitive.

And yes, it is difficult for me to remember all the different syntax for all the different types of messages.

Also, are you saying you want to make the UI/UX difficult because that's on theme for cyberpunk? I'll downvote that.

Arx is also not a good thing to base 'what is a MUSH' on.

Most games don't have bboard + inform + mail + messengers.
Most games have only 2, MAYBE 3 of those.

But you're basically saying 'instead of quick and easy ways to access these, I want people to remember the full name and have to type out full, lengthy commands'

I mean how would I access a specific message?

      'LIST ALL BOARDS'
'LIST ALL POSTS ON ANNOUNCEMENTS BOARD'
'OPEN POST 8 ON ANNOUNCEMENTS BOARD'
      ?

      +bbread
      +bbread 1
      +bbread 1/8

One of those is hell on people who have dyslexia and a pain to type out (and gets into 'how the fuck do I remember the context for this shit again?') and the other just requires... learning a command.

ETA: or would it be 'list all messages on announcements board' or 'open message 8 on announcements board'? Like, this is just a different type of syntax that's much more involved/lengthy to remember. And again, a bit bad for people who struggle with dyslexia, spelling, or ESL.

@carma said in Interest in Cyberpunk MU*?:

My only request is please no commands with + @ / = in them.

Arx fries my brain with its indecipherable syntax. Simple tasks become monumental chores because of code-like structure.

For unread stuff, what would be great is just one four-letter command:

      NEXT

Show me the next unread thing.

Also let me specify which next unread thing I want to read.

      NEXT JOURNAL

      NEXT MESSAGE

      NEXT INFORM

      NEXT BOARD

      downvote.

I mean forgetting that most things on Arx can be done without a + or @ and those are there for those of us who are habitual with them...

Typing 'NEXT BOARD' (with the implication you want all-caps for those) is much more of a hassle than bbnew or @mail #.

      Also: it's cyberpunk.
Code is kind of... a thing.

The idea of stripping out the like, cyber aspect of cyberpunk makes me balk. I hate everything about this.

I've been playing this game for a week? week and a half now?

A lot of stuff is being given unto players to develop, which I think is pretty swell. I know that's not some peoples' cup of tea, but I like the freedom it presents.

I'm playing in the Regency and I'm currently stationed on High Centre. I'd love more people to RP with if anyone's been considering checking it out.

@Misadventure I don't have answers to all your questions. I think recognizable Force powers is a yes. I don't know if dark/light will be tracked, though; at least in the traditional sense. But that'd be something to ask Staff. They're still, from what I've gathered, hammering out how they'll do Force stuff (and apps for it).

CPunk 2077 is everything I could have hoped for.

Like, from the get-go, I was super pleased. This is non-spoiler-y as heck, but:

Makeup options in video games have always sucked. Like they always look SO BAD. Like a 5-year-old trying on her mom's makeup bad.

But the makeup options in CP2077? Look good. There's good variety. They're designed well. Hell there's awesome nail art.

I should sleep. I need to sleep. But the game, she calls to me.

      @auspice

It's way more good than it is bad, and I think that it exploding like that is part of the development process (so to speak). I am quite sure they learned an incredible amount, and I love that the little caption at the bottom was all "S9 Next!"

This was the caption I liked:
      0c157e00-7d17-4e1b-b327-1aa6d8b768d8-image.png

It's engineering. Failures still mean data which still means progress.

They managed that flip from vertical to horizontal to vertical. Which has never been done before. That, in and of itself, makes it a success in my eyes.

Theories are the engine failure was purposeful to test hover capabilities.

Overall that was amazing ... until the end... But, even then: they completed the rotation they wanted, they landed it where they wanted, they just... uh, landed a bit fast.

But watching it do those maneuvers and fly horizontally was....
      man.

      Mind blown.

      ETA:
Early theories re: landing issue was that one of the engines didn't fully re-light, which would have caused the velocity on landing.

btw for anyone concerned about the delay earlier:
it was nothing to do with the launch itself. A small aircraft flew into the restricted airspace, so they had to halt the launch to make certain they cleared the area.

      Making character sheets.

      Specifically WoD.

I've been invited to a Vampire VTT. It's a cool concept. And I really enjoyed the last Vampire VTT I was in a handful of years ago.

But I really, really hate making WoD sheets. Like, so much.

I sat here thinking 'If I could pay someone on Fiverr $5 to do this, I totally would.'

There are people on Fiverr who will do your char sheet for you, but it's all D&D*. So, hey, if you really enjoy making WoD characters: there's a side hustle opportunity for you.

*OK, so of the 9 people who will write a character sheet for you... all are D&D but 1 will also do Star Wars FFG. But that's it! No other game systems!
