GRRM is also well-known to hate 'fan fiction' and find it distasteful, hes' talked about it in interviews and junk. I don't think I've ever heard of an IP holder ACTUALLY sending a C&D letter to a MU*; I feel like it's a holdover from the old days of Lion King MUCKs and the nebulous fear of Disney suing them.

(Shameless selfish post) Thanks. If you wanna root me on further, any thoughts you might have on the setting section posted above would be awesome. -

So, only the one GoT place will ever have the 'real rights' to use the game then? Got it.

RE: [Original Supernatural/Vampire MUSH] Houses of the Blood MUSH
I wish I had more meaty and faster updates. I'm waning, guys. Trying to putter along, and I just continue to think I've just bitten off more than I can chew.
But, here we are. I'm still pushing, and going to write today while I try to determine if the server I'm on currently is going to be back, or if I'm going to migrate to digitalocean...
Working on the 'what is a vampire/what is vampire society/how is a normal city-state set up under the Republic of the Night' section today. Once I knock this out, which is the next-biggest section to get out of my brain and onto paper, I think the rest will go much more quickly.
I will admit: I've cleaved myself back from some of the concepts I was debating on 'CvC social conflict'. Or rather, rejigged my thoughts on them. Rather than having social conflict done in that manner on a one-on-one scale (though it can still be done with a contest, it's not something akin to social combat again), I'm focusing more on things like Influence. I'm hoping to do it in such a way that is 1) fun for players, and 2) doesn't turn into the nightmare that RfK's stuff was. Here's to hoping!

There's also a free Quick Start of the ASOIAF RPG which explains a lot of what the standard MUSHer would need.
https://freeronin.com/gr_files/SiF_Fastplay.pdf
That, combined with an on-MUSH walkthrough chargen that does all the calculations for you would be plenty.

RE: A Game of Thrones MUX Discussion
- Custom Houses will be used if staff makes them a thing. If you actively put impetus on people to do so, then it can happen. But it must be something that says 'Hey, this is something staff wants people to do' rather than just 'Hey, this is an option'. Plus people will go where their friends are, so you may have no Lannisters and all McGillicudy's.
- Little Political outside of King's Landing focusing on one area, which can still have a cross-section. Free Cities would work for cross-sectioning, or a Westeros with a Regent instead of a King on the Iron Throne, so that there's a bit more jockeying other than the FIND DE HEIR!
- Rosters with the ability to create characters to fit a needed nice might work. A lot of people avoid these games because they're All Roster and they can't find anything they like. A short application process for an original character wouldn't hurt, IMO.
- Throw canon into the dragon fire. Also, if you're going to avoid exact canon, do something insane like an ongoing conflict between the Westerosi and their allies and the Night Walkers, or remnants of the Valyrians under the leadership of a competent Targaryen trying to wrest the Westerosi via an invasion force. Give something else besides Politick and Fuck Ad Nauseum to do. I think a lot of people spoke highly of Firan's regularly-scheduled War Eras, so repelling invasions and such at a constant stalemate of equal military force could be intriguing, especially if players are giving the ability to affect that status quo.

RE: Demon: the Descent
There was a Matrix MUSH back in the day. It was extensively advertised (though probably outside the MSB circle). It never reached a critical mass, though it was relatively fun. But then it died due to a combination of server flakiness (it was using one of those old fly-by-night free servers back in the day) and the lack of critical mass I recall made the staff not bother to try to find somewhere to bring it back up.

RE: Mutant Genesis (X-Men)
Three of them are alive in the comics and they are essentially, with a few individuality traits, treated often as 'one character' in how they present as a hive mind.

RE: [Original Supernatural/Vampire MUSH] Houses of the Blood MUSH
Making no real headway of late.
I added some things to the introduction section to help me with organization and keeping my eyes on what needs to be in each section.
The setting and history file is complete. Would like input if anyone cares to give me some opinions: https://www.hotbmush.com/wiki/02._Setting_and_History
Working on the 'what is a vampire/what is vampire society' file. This one is going faster than I expected, which I'm happy about. ETA: I also came up with something that I like thematically when a vampire goes too far to the end of their emotional spectrums (rage and anger for descendants of Licenia; solace and ennui for descendants of Titus). Once I have all that in the next file I'll link it too.

RE: Game Design: Avoiding Min-Maxing
@misadventure
Super way late to the party, but this is what the new MET VtM does, just in reverse from what you've posited. You get one skill at 4, two at 3, three at 2, and four at 1. Then you get 30XP to spend. -
RE: Social 'Combat': the hill I will die on (because I took 0 things for physical combat)
Social health tracks have the same problem as 'roll dice ot influence' depending on how written. Taking 'social damage' still is going to trigger some people's agency complaints, because they will have to RP in some what that they don't want to. As well, there are Social and Mental stress/health tracks in Cortex as well. Mostly those end up 'putting you out of the fight' somehow.

RE: Social 'Combat': the hill I will die on (because I took 0 things for physical combat)
Sorry. I meant that as the nebulous ‘you’ simply because it’s been said multiple times in the thread prior.

RE: Social 'Combat': the hill I will die on (because I took 0 things for physical combat)
I understand that they were not designed in that manner, you don't have to keep repeating that point ad nauseum. RPGs are not new territory for me man. But there becomes a point where social stats should have some meaning between player characters vis a vis concepts and player skill vs. character skill. That's all that I'm saying and all that my goal is with designing some type of social conflict system.

RE: Social 'Combat': the hill I will die on (because I took 0 things for physical combat)
Right. My examples fall to the very extreme that we all have encountered and seen in games. I think those of us who are advocating some type of social combat just want a way for that to be more mitigated in some manner, and giving more value to social stats, especially when considering player skill vs. character skill (which is a whole can of worms I don't want to circle discuss again).
Suffice to say, I agree that there are things that it shouldn't be able to do, approaches that need to happen in some manner, and such things. But how do we get there in a manner that doesn't turn into the most extreme manners.
In all honesty, this whole discussion just makes me almost want to eschew Social Skills and just... go. I've been on tons of MU*s without them unless it somehow related to combat (Leadership to rally, as the primary example).
