What the problem is is when people only play up, not down. So for instance they can't fake physical dots (sooner or later they'd need to roll brawl+strength) but they'll avoid portraying low social dots.

From a meta-point of view, it's challenging to roleplay someone being bad at some things without making a caricature out of them.

I am pretty guilty of this with one of my current PCs. 😓 She has Presence 1, Manipulation 2, and a spread of 4 dots in social skills. (Socialize 2, Empathy 1, Subterfuge 1). I didn't really -mean- to do it, going in. I just made the mistake of going 'hey, I want to play a not very social, easy to overlook character, whose limited social interactions are going to be heavily influenced by cues from her high Auspex-----oh wait, I'm a fucking idiot and 99% of the RP I'm going to be doing is social. Hm. Yeah, I need to get around to raising that stuff.....eventually.'

A lot of people have "low social stats" in real life and do just fine. When you roll, though, you're putting your character's abilities to the test. It's typically fine to roleplay someone social who is affable and or kind of scary or whatever in a passive sense; but if you have to roll and your stats don't back it up, that just means that under pressure, in that particular type of situation, your character's confidence and abilities crumble.

At least, that's one feasible way of doing it, in my opinion. Being social doesn't mean you're good at it. I like to cook, but the times I've been able to cook anything beyond the most basic stuff and have it come out well have been rare (and sometimes you get that 10 on a chance die).

Then you have the people who play UP their social stuff that they don't have, at which point I want to strangle a mother fucker.

I've used Jack so many times. It's just such a simple, solid name.

I also tend to notice people using names I've used in the past before a lot, even if I wouldn't have noticed otherwise.

Like, I will laser-focus on someone using Devlin immediately because I played a Devlin for so long.

This is actually not a bad segway for me to ask some questions that have been on my mind since this thread was created. I'm really curious to see what (if anything) you folks care to share your thoughts on the topic.

As a refreshed warning please stay mature about these topics and don't get confrontational or judgmental. If the material makes you uncomfortable the option to ignore the thread is at the bottom of this page.

This is specifically for generic non-Shang type MU*.

How do you guys find partners for non-vanilla kinds of relationships and especially when it comes to the more racy stuff out there? Anything from the somewhat more common "50 Shades" stuff that's relatively generally accepted to arrangements which are crimes or completely taboo in the real world - the obvious examples that I have in mind is IC rape or to incestuous relationships on games such as The Reach (or Arx) where PCs from the same families were sleeping together.

How do these conversations take place? How do you make sure the other person is okay OOC?

While we're on the topic, how (and if) do you keep them from getting out of closed door situations and reaching the grid?

Again, if you're not comfortable sharing your thoughts please don't feel pressured to do so.

I assume that sort of thing just happens once by chance and then if you have the inclination to try something similar again you're going to go pitch it to someone whom you know has been willing in the past.

That, or people just ask. Like, I have been propositioned like, "hey, if it's not your thing, no worries, but I'm looking for someone to play my brother-slash-fuckbuddy, would you be interested?"

There's also just sometimes when you stumble into that sort of family dynamic and you kind of just either choose to go with it or not (which counts as the 'by chance' initial encounter from before, except probably with more than one person who are clearly into it).

For the less taboo and more commonplace and socially acceptable kink stuff (i.e. BDSM as opposed to incest/rape) I think you just kind of play with someone and they bring it up IC and if you're down, go for it and if you're not, they'll try to force panther jizz down your throat.

I mean, or so I've heard.

@DareDaemon None of that makes it any less fucking creepy, man. Like I said, I can accept some sort of uninformed consent, but if you're willing to spy, your explicit word, on people, at least inform them of the very real possibility so they can decide whether they want to play there. Don't take it as a granted just because you can do something it's implicitly obvious you will when most people's general expectations differ.

      It's super creepy, man.

I like Dorothy Parker a lot.

      I like Percy Shelley's "Love's Philosophy" a lot.

I like writing off-the-cuff limericks, as a lot of people on Spirit Lake found out one very weird morning.

I also sometimes write poetry IC because whatever is happening strikes a particular character, and that's my favorite thing.

I think Hemingway's poetry is Vogon poetry without the good bits.

@L-B-Heuschkel said in The ethics of IC romance, TS, etc:

I found out later that the same player went on to have a relationship IC with another player and when that ended, shamed him as a pedophile. Then again, she also claimed to be terminally ill and that her boyfriend in real life broke into hospital to beat her up twice, and that she regularly missed school because of near-death experiences. There's a certain breed of teenager on the internet you just need to stay the hell away from.

Have had encounters of this kind, will attest it is the worst. Not so much the "damn, you're HOW old?" but yes the hilariously obvious (in hindsight and with years and years of experience that I did not have at the time) lying and woe is me, etc., etc.

I also love limericks and at one point wrote a bunch of double-dactyls because apparently I like arbitrary scansion rules and forms that are frequently used for humour. Most of the poetry I really like has a sense of humour.

One of my recent characters wrote an ode to a girl in the form of twelve limericks.

10/10, knocked it out the park.

@Coin said in Punishments in MU*:

If you're making an exception to a rule, then it's an exception. If X gets to have a stat at 8 and no one else does, that's an exception. If it's because you trust them with it, then 1) what's so important about that ONE STAT that staff needs to TRUST THE PLAYER for them to be able to have it? and 2) why do other people get to buy it later on if they spend XP on it, if it's so important they couldn't be trusted with it at cgen?

On this issue, I concur. Excepting positions of power and boondoggles that arise therefrom, I believe that all PCs should be coming out of character generation with the same access to skills, traits, and the like, barring systems where traits are supposed to be somewhat unique, like a superhero game.

There you go. That was my complaint, not IC positions, because those come with narrative weight that, yes, you typically want someone you can at least trust. They also come with responsibilities.

But stats? Nah, fuck right off with that arbitrary shit.
