What the hell, they had never seen Clark without glasses on their whole lives? 🙂

I haven't seen the TV show, so I don't know if this applies, but in most Superman stories, it's not the glasses. Clark stands differently, talks differently, acts differently. They just don't look like the same person through pure body language. My favorite scene in the 1978 movie is just after Superman's date with Lois when Clark is about to confess, then turns back and collapses back into Clark, slouching into a servile posture, picking up a nervous stammer in his voice, never looking Lois in the eye; all done in a single camera shot so it all rides on Christopher Reeves's acting. Fantastic scene, and it's my permanent canon as to why people don't recognize the extremely recognizable guy.

      Absolutely agree.

Kind of the wrong thread for this conversation. Hardly feels like bitching.

In any case, on the topic of "omg, someone ran a plot and now someone else has a bunch of guns!!!" On Eldritch we pretty much reserve having to have things approved for like, military-rate hardware and weaponry, or supernatural stuff. That said, if I'm storytelling and you have a stash of illegal armaments in your basement and an NPC cop ends up down there, it might be an issue IC... but... yeah?

Equipment, especially long, pointless lists of what equipment a person has access to, seems ridiculous.

Actually, I would probably be totally into it if it were a low-Resources (i.e. most characters don't have much money to spare) Hunter game. I could see that game benefitting from a character having all their important shit in +inv and being super protective of their +1 Laptop or whatever.

The Hyborean Age would be a great era for the kind of game I was talking about above.

At that point isn't it just a fantasy game?

I'm sorry, what would you call a game with vampires, werewolves, mages, et al? Historical Realism? 😛

      @arkandel

I've read the first two books (which only feature half the cast of the show; the Crows are from a whole different duology in the same setting).

I liked the show. There are a lot of changes (the addition of a whole cast of characters will do that) but the story beats from the first book are all hit and the production value is pretty good. I found some of the acting a little stiff (but I am more prone to putting those responsibilities on the directors rather than the actors, usually) but other performances were stellar.

All in all, I liked it. I'll probably read the rest of the books in the setting before the next season comes out.

Things that give you significant bonuses on dice rolls are not that difficult to get.

Just remembering to mention that you've lit incense and/or that you did the LBRP before you started occulty-stuff can give you +1 or +2 dice on rolls.

Also, honestly, unless you're a damn good shot you're probably better off throwing that gun at a werewolf or vampire. You might surprise them long enough to run away.

I would really love to play on a smaller Hunter-only game where resources were so scarce that Good Time Management was an exceedingly useful Merit for occultists because that one fucking incense stick needs to last you through several rituals! Hehe.

Given the history with the person, you can be realistically primed to look for insincerity.

      The words used though?

Is there no way to indicate that you said what you meant to say, and what that was was understood differently by the given audience, despite prior audiences understanding what was meant?

I think you can say things to avoid casting or accepting blame and still describe a miscommunication.

To give you my personal perspective, I think you should not apologize for something you don't intend to do again. If I have a turn of phrase that encompasses what I mean in a reasonable way, I'm okay with it. I won't necessarily be changing it in general, though I might in a particular circumstance. I might still express regret that it didn't convey the message to someone.

In the end, if someone can't judge my sincerity correctly after I have stated what I can, and they get hung up on a sentence, I can't do anything more for them.

In this case, whomever dealt with it knows best what was likely the actual intent. Apply this to me, and I won't be considering you a reasonable person to discuss anything difficult with.

If you think what you said does not require an apology, then don't apologize, that's fine. But if you actually look at the phrase, that's not what is happening.

@Zyrus said in The 100: The Mush:

I do apologize that was what it was taken as, just saying that wasn't my intention.

Why is Zyrus apologizing for something he didn't even do? The interpretation is not something he can apologize for, his manner of expressing whatever he said, is. But that's not what he was apologizing for.

It's like saying, "I do apologize you fell down," after you trip someone accidentally. Mother fucker, apologize for tripping me, not for my inability to catch myself adequately.

That's why it's insincere. If he hadn't apologized at all and just said, "This was misinterpreted, it wasn't my intention", people might still think he's a dick, but there would be no reason to call him insincere.

She was addressing Alina's race in an interview - since she was described as a blonde white woman in the books but mixed race in the show - and attributed the lack of diversity to her own shortcomings as a young author when she first wrote the books.

I haven't read the books, so I didn't realize that was a studio change! Huh. It certainly adds a ton more depth to her character that wouldn't have really been there otherwise, and gives us that fun moment I mentioned, so...wow, props to Netflix, and screw the haters!

Also, that the author was pretty new really explains the other minor thing I found kinda cheesy, how pretty much all of the on-screen recurring characters have a romantic pairing or two. It felt so Young Adult Novel, haha!

Even in the books, a lot of the tropes that are cheesy get turned on their heads eventually. Some don't. She's pretty good at walking a fine line between the two.

Naw. I probably wouldn't even allow psychic/supernatural Merits (without some serious drawbacks, if I did). I've said it before, but I would love a Hunter-only game that was less about the division of Compacts and Conspiracies and more about how people organize themselves organically. You would have TF:V and Union and even Network Zer0 analogues, obviously (maybe even called that), but I would de-formalize it, at least at the beginning.

But yeah, basically being outclassed. I'd probably also just straight up state that we expect high PC turnover and to be ready for some DEAAAAAAAAATH.

      @Tempest
Make XP gains based on Conditions/Aspirations/etc., with minimal passive gains, if any at all, and then just make it fucking brutal.

Sometimes hating on casting choices is just borderline (?) racist because it makes no sense. The example I have in mind is Starfire being played by a black woman, there was so much bitching before the show started.

I mean technically speaking she should be orange, but otherwise who cares? She's not from Earth!

It crosses the "borderline" limit when you look back and see how much cultural and visual coding went into Starfire over the years in comic books and how much African-American style, fashion, and natural physical traits are present in her character design. Coding is important in storytelling, especially in visual mediums.

Yeah. And I would probably lobby for it to just have a high PC turnover rate, like I said. Even give higher than average beginning XP and then just watch people go through the woodchipper and have fun.

@Tempest Given Gauru alone would trigger Down and Dirty combat (which basically means 'one PC dies every turn') it doesn't look so good for the good guys.

This isn't necessarily true. The rule says most humans, which a cell or group of trained Hunters who are the PCs of the game wouldn't really count as, IMO.

But they still suffer from Primal Fear, making their Defense only calculable with Dexterity or Wits, ignoring Athletics/Brawl/Weaponry.

@Coin See, I think that depends on what you call "trained Hunters". To me that's not 'former marines/SAS', it's closer to 'breakfast joint waitresses and McDonalds shift managers'.

Sure, I guess PCs could be excluded from the DnD rule though just to let them not get slaughtered every single time a wolf looks at them funny.

Well, being a PC makes you exceptional. There's a reason why examples of "normal people NPCs" in the rules tend to only get like, 3 rolls they have more than 4 dice in.

on the topic of good films, @surreality made me aware that there was a leaked copy of The Final Girls out and I got it yesterday and watched it. Guys, it's so much fun.
