      @Coin Specifically, they say:

For new projects with higher ratings, there’ll be no smoking or e-cigarettes unless it’s essential to the creative vision of the artist or because it’s character-defining (historically or culturally important).

I don't see the big deal. If the smoking is essential to portraying the time period ambiance (e.g. Mad Men) or the specific character (e.g. The Smoking Man in X-Files) then it'll get a pass. If it isn't essential, then taking it out shouldn't be disruptive.

Agree to disagree on how it may potentially affect Russian Doll, then.

Man, this is gonna cramp Russian Doll's style hard for the next season, rofl.

Not at all. Russian Doll is TV-MA. Netflix's policy only applies to shows aimed at younger viewers (i.e. TV-14 and under).

The article states they would be applying it to other works as well unless it's specifically key to a character's portrayal, and while I can see some characters that way in Russian Doll, smoking is so endemic to that show in the background that it would maka a pretty big difference in ambience.

@Coin Yeah, I think the maintenance would have to be constant, though I know that's hard to do too.

I would say: decide what your top limit is, call it 100% active presence.

When your AP drops to 50%, you open up apps until you're back at around 100%, and so on and so on.

Also, is it true that Netflix is thinking about removing all the smoking from season 3?

Yes, Netflix has vowed to not depict smoking in its shows geared towards younger audiences.

      @Ganymede said in Good TV:

I don't know, but if they do then you would remove half of the scenes.

This only applies to new projects moving forward. Most smoking occurs just casually in the background, so the impact to the story itself should be negligible.

I keep thinking about a Fading Suns game and have a few ideas, esp now with Ares! I think what makes me the most hesitant is how to control numbers to make an active game with lots of GM/staff attention since I think at the very least that would need to be capped at a certain number of participants and I would probably want a 1 PC per player thing. I am def keeping my eye on the games lately who restrict slots to see how sustainable that is long term, and I am kind of curious as to how one arrives at that number.

Absolutely key: if the amount of players drops, open apps back up. Don't wait until 75% of your playerbase is gone to open apps again and certainly don't limit the new slots to less than your original number.

Is this like a Voldemort thing? We can't say their name or they'll appear?

Seanan. They're talking about Seanan. (Yes, I know you know that.)

I'm not sure I ever got her approval, even when I was in the Pillowfort, but I certainly didn't have the time or inclination to seek it. I was even there the day she was ousted, saw her log off for the last time, even!

I don't think she ever did anything bad to me other than ignore me a lot and, the few times we did play in the same scenes, ignore my character pretty handily. Like, whatever. I think part of it was that she considered me beneath her notice, which, lulz, I mean, okay.

Certainly not going to defend the shitty things she did and the shitty attitudes she's had, but I'm happy she's doing well in her writing career, as it means someone made it and that she doesn't have time or inclination to be in a hobby that clearly calls her to a position of power that brings out the worst in her. Win for everyone.

If we're really getting into classical crossover fanfic, though, we have to talk about Jason and the Argonauts.

"Every culture hero from the Greek city-states team up and have an adventure."

Now I just imagine the classical version of AO3, but instead of leaving comments people cluster around the Jason fanfic author to shout that the author is clearly getting this characterization wrong, because Hercules is totally not with Hylas and wouldn't leave the quest for him, because Hercules/Iolaus OTP, no Hercules/Megara OTP, are you kidding that relationship was so unhealthy, etc. And then one person starts screaming "UPDATE PLS!"

"Which poleis get to have their culture heroes on the boat" was a serious political statement for a while.

And if we're going into classical shipper territory, "was Achilles or Patroclus the top" was something 5th- and 4th-century BCE playwrights and philosophers liked to argue.

(Seriously, it shows up in the Symposium.)

Clearly it was patroclus, that's why his name means "Daddy Glory". <.<

A lot of Great Literary Classics are basically fanfiction. I mean, the Divine Comedy is self-insert fanfic, of all things.

"And then Virgil, who was now my bestie, took me to meet Homer and Ovid. And Virgil was like, 'hey guys, this is Dante, he's awesome.' And Homer was like, 'he is awesome, he should join our club.
"And also everyone I hate is in Hell."

Especially relevant to this analogy is how, while people really into Dante have read the entire Divine Comedy, most people have only read the first part, most cultural knowledge and references are about the first one, and even among academics, it's really only the first one that seems to merit any attention.

I am deeply interested in an OC game because I like making my own superheroes. Loved it even when I had to do algebra to make a character back in the original Villains and Vigilante days.

Also, and there is no nice way to put this, OC games have fewer creepy dudes playing lesbian Emma Frost or gay harem-having Superboy, just because the fan wank material isn't there. (And this isn't me saying I think playing those characters as LGBTQ is wrong, playing them as sex dolls isn't even wrong. But it always comes across as desperately unpleasant to anybody who doesn't share that same sexual interest in those characters.)

      Then there was Hero's Dreams...
      -Superboy clonecest with Match
-Impulse clonecest with whatever his evil clone is
-Alex Powers making out with Lor-Zod (both were 11 y.o.)

Lots of fetishes get put on display in Supers games.

Not strictly a clone per se, but I believe that Inertia.

Anyone who knows me knows that AU is my jam. If I play on a game long enough, chances are that, staff-willing, I will absolutely run a mirror/AU plot so I and others can play alternate versions of their characters, often with and in contrast to their normal versions.

      It's my thing.

      Ask anyone.

Lol, this reminded me of when I played Superboy in a monogamous relationship with Nico Minoru and our Emma Frost was played by a dude with so little interest in TS we cycled through Cyclops trying to TS her like once every two months.

So what a supers MU needs is a system. Something that can basically end a schoolyard shoving match between players.

      I mean, sort of.

It depends on your player base and your ability and desire as staff to enforce a theme of narrative cooperation in your players.

No. We had a talk with some people the other day about how the main characteristic of Nobilis is that everyone wants to play it and no one ever does.

Dreams of the First Age. Full tilt elder Exalts with Limit Breaks turned up to 11. Also: must take appropriately Greek tragedy style Limits, not something lazy like half of the ones in the book.
