I gotta say, taking a nice long break from this poisonous hobby makes it pretty easy to

      let it go

Devilshire is a million years ago. I've got so many other things to be angry about. I mean, I have a sister who voted for Trump.

      Ouch.

      Few things:

      • Wow. Just wow. I mean wow. I didn't expect a seven-page thread based on @Seraphim73 taking exception to someone using "cunt" and me backing the request (and, in the spirit of sincerity, I have used the word, as an insult no less, more than once--special shout-out to the time I used it on WORA to punctuate the end of a rant about VASpider and @Quibbler was like "I was not expecting you to use that word...").

      • The difference between Nazis co-opting a Buddhist symbol and creating the Swastika (i.e. taking positive symbology and ascribing to it something hateful) and someone being okay with referring to themselves as a SJW (or being referred to as) is that in the former, the values are applied to the symbol, whereas in the latter the symbol is applied to the values. It is very different to imbue a symbol with hateful rhetoric than it is to have a general attitude towards social justice be referred to (however mockingly) as "SJW". I mean, I didn't take offense to being called a SJW, I took (slight) offense at being called delusional for being one. I mean, I'm probably delusional in some other respects, but not that.

    • RE: Mushing and Dating/Relationships

I met an ex through online roleplaying (not MU, but same difference). It didn't end well, but I don't blame the medium we met on, just poor decision-making on both our parts when it came time to wrangle a long-distance relationship when she had to go home after vacation [her clamining she could handle it (she couldn't) and me deciding to give yet another (third) long-distance relationship a try]. There's a lot more details to put in there, but they're mine.

Current girlfriend is new (she plays tabletop RP and we actually just started a call of Cthulhu game with some friends of mine, so she's understood the concept of MUing when I've explained it to her) and I am not MUing at all, though that's less because of her specifically and more because I have been socializing way more in the past year and that has cut down on my availability and time for it. Also, I am back in school (and doing pretty well, which only happens when I attend class and actually put in some time and effort into it). So between a full-time job, classes, a girlfriend I see on the weekends, and finding a night every week to hang out with a friend or two, my free time tends to be extremely erratic and I just end up filling it with a random video game.

      Typically League of Legends.

I haven't read Ready Player One, but I did watch the movie. If I had to read a book with all the references that I saw in the movie written out I would toss the thing out the window before page 3. It's a lot easier to digest that sort of shit visually than in text, for me. I also understand they changed a bunch of things.

We could just do it all ourselves. Changeling. Geist. Add some Kuei-Jin in there. I mean at this point I think we could write-up some badass fan-supplements faster than they could produce actual content.

Saw The Towering Inferno the other day.

Richard Chamberlain really nailed playing a shitheel in that movie, it was great. Also watching Steve McQueen and Paul Neuman trying to out macho each other was a real treat as well.

I remember seeing this as a kid in the theater. Scared the shit out of me. Monster movies didn't bother me at all but 'realistic' disaster movies always bothered me.

Wow, I'm amazed, was there an intermission? It's like a 3 hour movie, I couldn't imagine that in a theater as an adult, never mind being a kid.

My stepfather and a friend of his, during a roadtrip with me and his friend's son, in a truly magnificent move of adult sadism, decided we'd all go to the movies... to see Nixon. Go ahead. Go ahead and type "Nixon movie run time" into google.

      Nice flowchart.

I assume there are some levels in between just a plain guard and say the knight-captain? Or the artisans? Like if there is a Master Blacksmith, like someone who is clearly topnotch but isn't the Guildmaster, would they have a form of address on their own?

Hhmm. I might tag @Coin a little bit on that. I personally don't want to complicate things too much-- if people have to remember too many titles and then someone forgets it, I don't want there to be drama for simple mistakes.

It might just be like: They'd still be master/mistress but noted as 'Master Blacksmith' as their full title, like: 'Master Blacksmith Ariel Fogsworth' or 'Master Performer Etienne Swansea', etc. The guards, yeah, will probably have like lieutenants and stuff, who might be considered the same as knights (sir/dame) but we'll see what @Coin thinks there.

I can see an argument for a stricter hierarchical system within guilds and stuff, maybe modeled after the nobility hierarchy. It might even make a lot of sense if they directly mirror it, actually. I kind of like that.

Really, it depends whether you want to make the commoners mimic the nobility, or passive rage against it (or mock/parody it socially, which would be interesting too).

      Super belatedly.

"Wrinkle in Time" was an interesting watch for me, because it didn't work but it's one of those things that didn't work for reasons I find kind of intellectually interesting to take apart. Its failings are as much as on me as on the movie. It wasn't really the adaptation I-the-reader wanted. It wasn't really aimed at even as broad an audience as something like the Pixar movies was, but lived firmly in the realm of being first and foremost for kids. My expectations were for something different when Ava Duvernay was attached to the project and were calibrated incorrectly, not in terms of quality but in terms of the movie she and the studio (who knows which, a lot my issues were script-level) were clearly interested in making. I didn't love it but am certainly not sorry I paid money to see it in a theater.

It is probably as good an adaptation as we'll ever get and a lot the performances and visuals were fun (loved Zach Galifianakis' Happy Medium cave).

      I get that.

I tend to try to divorce myself from the source material as much as possible when watching adaptations of things I really like. I put my expectations on the same level as I would going in to watch something new. It works for me--I tend to enjoy things a lot more than I have when I have NOT done that. I didn't do it (initially) for example, for Keanu Reeves' Constantine and left the theater really irritated. I watched it a few years later and, I mean, other than Shia being annoying, it's not a horrible movie. It just isn't the same Hellblazer as in the comics. That's fine.

@coin I was using hyperbole, but the fact that you react so negatively to it is a little troubling. I thought you'd be amused, not fly straight into 'OMG GODWIN's LAW!' You should take a step back and cool down.

But that's just my opinion, so you probably didn't read it anyways. You know. Because you don't listen to the opinions of others. 🙂

Oh, I'm super chill, man. Honest. But on top of this being a textual medium, you have a history of being so comically over-sensitive and then being so comically hyper-aggressive, depending entirely on your random mood, that I honestly don't even bother trying to figure out if what you say is hyperbole or not anymore.

It's cool, though. I mean, I'm not offended or anything. If I was, I would have used a word like "stupid" or "ridiculous" or "infuriating" rather than, you know, the usually-related-to-funny "silly".

      MAGA.

Damn, are you so salty regarding your Commander-in-Chief that you've resorted to comparing me, a heavily left-leaning foreigner, to him as a critique on my disregard for artistic journalism when it comes to whether or not I like a movie or not?

Damn. Congrats. That's a new level of silly.

I feel like this warrants an amendment to Godwin's Law, 'cuz comparing people to Nazis is legit now a days, anyway.

What I've learned from this is you like poorly reviewed movies, because fuck the man for telling you what to like.

I've also put How to Talk to Girls At Parties on my watch-list, and my listen-list because there's a Gaiman-read version of this. He reads his own work beautifully. Let me tell you how moved I was by his reading of Snow Glass Apples. Answer: Very.
