    • San Francisco: Paris of the West

A gleaming edifice of technology, tolerance, and trends. This city is on the forefront of humanity, and the march of progress has become a sprint. Be on the front lines here in the City by the Bay.

At least, that's what they want you to think. The streets are clean, mostly, but please pay no attention to the junkie hiding at the mouth of the alley, drool rolling down his chin as he blissfully stares off into nothing. Jobs are plentiful, but please pay no attention to the child quietly sobbing while standing in the long lines at the food banks. Opportunities are equal, but please pay no attention to the whitewashed executive boardrooms.

The San Francisco of 2025 is different. A tech bubble that rivals Silicon Valley in the 1990's has swept through the city, bringing with it prosperity for those with the right skills. It has also brought income disparity the likes of which the city hasn't seen since the gold rush of the late 1940's. Political activism is on the rise as the have-nots push to become the haves, and, just like in any sort of conflict, factions are already forming.

Which side will you be on?

San Francisco: Paris of the West is a nWoD 1e MUX set in near-future (2025) San Francisco. Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, Changeling, Geist, and Mortal/Mortal+ characters will be available for play. Coming soon to a telnet client near you!

      Development Schedule:
      Alpha: COMPLETE - Wiki: http://www.sfmux.com/ - MUX: sfmux.com:1337
      Beta/Soft Open: 1 June
      Release/Open: 9 June

Check back to this thread for updates!

Chargen is In! (Although people find bugs for me still, but we've got most of them ironed out). XP Room is mostly built, and we have some players approved and on-Grid!

    • RE: The best I've ever...

@thenomain The best line I've heard in that vein (I'm a professional software engineer, so I hear a lot of this at work) is: "You're not writing code for yourself. You're writing for the murderous psychopath that will own your code in six months." Apparently consequences that include death are what are required for good code these days. Who knew?

    • RE: Experienced Tiers or How much is too much?

@thenomain said in Experienced Tiers or How much is too much?:

      @ganymede

Nope, it's SF. Paraphrased from the game: Tiers will inform who can do what.

Yeah, so, if I want to do what my friends are, I'm forced into it.

There's paraphrasing, and there's what you just did there. Let's take a look at the posted policy:

      *TIERS

      Start XP For Tiers:
      Tier 1: 100 XP
      Tier 2: 250 XP
      Tier 3: 400 XP
      Tier 4: 500 XP
All characters are capped at 900 XP

Plots will generally be expected to have a Tier Warning, giving players an
idea of the general difficulty of the adversaries they will face.*

A WARNING. One designed to give the GENERAL difficulty of the adversaries they will face.

Now, if you'd like to talk more specifically, let's instead dive into the idea you're talking about. You'd like to play something that is a bit less experienced than his cabal mates. So, when it comes down to it, you're the kid (I use the term 'kid' here lightly. You are the one that has not managed to accomplish as much as the others, it likely has nothing to do with chronological age) of the group. That's the role you've chosen. That doesn't disqualify you from participation, because you've got a Cabal around you. There may be IC ramifications (maybe your cabalmates warn you off because 'you're not ready' or they take extra pains to protect you in combat), but none of these things eliminate your participation. Those things will play out in a way that is hopefully interesting and believable. Because that's the role you chosen. You know... role play.

@lithium .... And -this- is why we have an Alpha phase! Looks like a couple of merits that were marked Restricted ended up in my data dump. If you notice anything else that seems absolutely insane and an obvious mistake, feel free to toss in a +request in-game. Thanks!

We are, as of today, OFFICIALLY OPEN! We got things off to a bang with a speech from our Mayor, Johnny Depp (I'm not paraphrasing, the actor has gone into politics), along with a few sphere-specific scenes following closely thereafter.

      See you folks on-grid!

@kay I don't see why that would be a problem at all! In fact, our setting prefers characters that are new to the city, so you and your crew would be a welcome addition.

@magee101 Our 'alpha' is more about allowing people to log in and look around (right now, we're locked down to staff logins only). CharGen is still being coded, and our Wiki is still being built, but we'd like the opportunity to see who's interested in our idea, set up a dialog, kick around some story ideas with our first 'wave' of players. At some point during Alpha, we'll open up Chargen, because I'm very sure that people will find bugs in my code, and I'd rather find them sooner than later. 🙂

Beta is where we start talking about character approval. Some of our House Rules may still be in flux during this point as well, but will be firm by the time we open.

@ixokai (Editor's Note: This player agreed to this release of IC information.) Your character is a Mysterium mage in his early 40's. While his early accomplishments were nothing to be scoffed at, they were not overtly remarkable. The events of the San Francisco timeline were a huge shock, however. Now, rather than attempting to 'do his job' and slowly grind out the Mysterium ranks, he seeks to bridge the gap between people... to be the Nexus. He was a driving force in bringing together his current cabal, and while his own cabal might not consider him the leader, he is considered by most others to be the spokesman (something that just comes naturally from being the guy that talks the most. Mages are very big on 'consent of the governed'). He's still in contact with his mentor despite their current distance (damned Mastigos), and his penchant for communication and the strength of his will (Mind Master, baybee) made him a candidate for Herald, which he accepted.

This is what I remember without looking at the +sheet or +jnotes.

This is why I do what I do. 🙂 But it's also why I'm so far behind. The immediacy of code is slowing down (we can get all the peoples we need through chargen now!), so I'll be getting people onto the grid with a vengeance.

      More announcements coming soon!

@arkandel yeah, summer will do that to mine. I end up needing to saline eyedrop them about three times a day vs nothing in the wintee.

It really depends on locality. My eyes are much drier in the winter, but that's because heating systems are constantly engaged and they blow dry air. It's too cool here to bother with more than a fan, so the air is generally more moist, and I have much fewer issues with my contacts.
