    • Curseborne and a Return to WoD

Been a while since I've opened my mouth on this site in some time. I wonder if there is talk around the proverbial water-cooler about an attempt to revitalize WoD/CoD-setting MU* games, but using Curseborne as a guidebook for streamlining the concern(s) around crossover play in the past (ex. Disciplines vs Contracts / Clarity vs. Arete).

Maybe I'm just over/undert-hinking this as of recent.

    • MediaWiki for dummies

So I don't know if this has been asked already, but I am looking at creating a personal wiki to house, store, and showcase previous played characters on otherwise closed games (ex. Fallcoast/The Reach, Fate's Harvest, etc.). I'd like to use MediaWiki, but I know there are a number of things I need to do first.

Because I know very little about coding, hosting, MySQL, etc. Can someone help this newb out in steps/processes/recommendations?

      Thanks!

Trust me, ain't nobody pouring margaritas on the Blue Line.

You make a fair point. It's also the only place one can take a legit nap during their commute w/o the worry of muggings or worse.

      sighs I miss the Metra.

And that doesn't even include the rich people's version, which is the Metra, serving the suburbs, which is a far more Eurorail experience than American mass transit.

I agree that it's the mass transportation for the suburban family/individual, but I wouldn't say that the Meta the "rich people's version" of the "L."

@Taika: "Must Have..." boy - that's a hard one to answer. I feel like you can't go wrong if you stick with neighborhoods along the Red Line. I would recommend trying to keep it equitable in terms of neighborhoods/districts (ie. an equal number of Northside and Southside locations). I think I'm just so stoked to see a Chicago-based game getting done that I don't know how much can be done versus wants.

I did want to ask when you're looking at in time. Is this taking place in the present day? A few years back? I ask because much of the landscape changed in some areas. Example: The South Loop went through a sudden boom in residential developments/rebuilding/gentrification around the same time The University Center of Chicago (a high-end residential hall for college students of DePaul, Columbia College, Roosevelt, Robert Morris) was built back in 2004 [*based on my own observations when I worked at The University Center between 2004-2006]. Much of the neighborhood/area looks vastly different than it did in say, late 90s/early 2000s.

....scratch everything I just asked about the cities. If I had explored the Wiki more, I would've answered my own questions. #readingisfundamental.

As a resident of a suburb near Chicago, I'm pretty excited to see [finally] a Midwest-based WoD game. Question: will you be using the WoD: Chicago book for any source material/metaplots? How big do you envision the grid to be? Example: keeping the majority of the game within one or two neighbohood (Old Town, Bucktown, Calumet Heights, Bronzeville...) or each couple of grid spaces represents one of the neighborhoods (and have a larger grid representing more of the city)?

All of this makes me miss reading my Exalted Books. That's not a bad thing (IMO). Feels very much like "Seeded" = Dragon Blooded 🙂

Star Trek that doesn't predicate on being a space sim

So a game that happens more on-ground that space exploration/conquering? Like a DS-9 type?

I don't know if I can post this on this thread, but there was an idea a friend and I talked about as a possible TV show (pilot-TV dreams), that might fit this niche.

Games that I'd be interested to play on in some capacity

      • Dresden Files-themed game

      • Dark Ages game (DA:Vampire, DA:Mage, DA:Werewolf, DA:Fae, DA:Inquisition)

      • Mage: The Sorcerers Crusade

      • Magicians-themed game

      • HP-themed game not focused on kids/teachers (the worldbuild has grown a great deal, IMO)

      • Alternative-Victorian-Themed (by this, I mean to be a Victorian Themed game but alternative history/timeline. So that someone like myself as a POC can play a POC PC w/o worrying about "wait--Black people were treated waaaaaay harsher in the 1900s...")

      • Supernatural/Paranormal themed game. Doesn't have to be based on any one canon, but similar to @Bobotron

    • RE: Demon: the Descent

I'd be willing to give it a shot. Demon was a unique concept (both oWoD and nWoD). I remember that BITN (Bump in the Night MUX) was Demon/Mortal/Hunter(?) themed. It was pretty enjoyable.

@ixokai The name is from the comic. Joe Hill (Stephen King's kid) named it Lovecraft. Keyhouse and the Drowning Cave, the Narwhals mascot, that all comes from the comic.

This is one of my favorite graphic novel series. Not that anyone cares. Just wanted to point that out--since the name of the game made me really curious if there was going to be Whispering Iron vents out there for unfortunate fools to create strange and dangerous keys 🙂

Anyone know of any MU*s out there that are using the 20th Anniversary books? I suddenly found myself having a sick interest in playing on a game that uses CtL:20th

    • RE: Potential Game / Temperature Read

@Auspice: here's another link to a free copy of Witchcraft and it's system:

      http://www.angelfire.com/realm2/the_grove/Witchcraft.pdf

As I've heard several people disdain's for WoD/ST system, I can understand. It's just a system that I know a bit more than other RP systems. If I played D&D or RIFTs as much as I play WoD games, I'd probably have initially recommended those because of my familiarity/bias with those systems.

I'm all for K.I.S.S when it comes to game systems. Especially for those that want to play/get involved w/o having to struggle with calculus.

@auspice said in Potential Game / Temperature Read:

I just can't think of a system I personally like enough / would be happy with for Magicians

So I'm coming late on this thread. Personally, I loved the Magicians. I loved the characters, the worlds, the whole sha-bang-a-bang. Even the television series on SciFi (or SyFy) makes me want to re-read the books again. I enjoyed the difference between the books (high-functioning students getting into a private undergrad school vs. high-functioning students attending graduate school).

I also can see the inherent conflicts in Grossman's magical world (The Neitherlands policing the various fountains, the students/faculty at Brakebills, and the hedge-wizards with their back-ally covens).

As for a game system of which I know not a whole lot outside WoD (or at least, which I've played). Why not use a reworking of WoD? Someone mentioned magic is just a headache amongst the various books. Is there a way of scaling it down to be easy(-ier) to understand the mechanics, but still adds complexity to "will casting Bujold's Sorcerous Nail Extraction work on this thick 2x4 plank in front of me?")

There is also the Unisystem from CJ Carella's Witchcraft RPG that might be a bit easier to navigate when it comes to throwing dice and utilizing dice pools for whatever's going on between characters.

Again...these are just my random two cents.
