I keep hearing folks say they really would prefer that, except for a very vocal few, and I'm not sure why we as a culture/community are letting a vocal few people make us keep the hog pit around instead of making the decision that we need to be better.
I don't mind the Hog Pit. There are times when gloves off can be beneficial. I more mind the fact that, even with a designated gloves off area, people can't seem to keep it there and it ends up spilling everywhere because things get dragged into the mud if they get too dirty, instead of someone turning on the hose, like should happen.
If we get rid of the Hog Pit, then those lines become, well, muddier. I think that would ultimately have the opposite of the intended effect. At least with it there, there are moderate boundaries between 'pit material' and 'non pit material'. Even if some people still fail to grasp that.

@Rinel -- Gany's right. That is absolutely a reasonable accommodation, and the law is absolutely on your side. But more importantly, as the legal profession moves increasingly toward the digital realm, many attorneys don't even work out of offices at all, and function perfectly fine. (@saosmash might disagree with me here) So what difference does it make if you're in a particular room, working from a particular computer, at a particular time? You're still doing the job. I'm sure that you keep your clients informed, and if you're winning cases for them, I doubt that they really give a shit if you stay in a particular building (unless they're very old, and even then, you're still winning cases). So, do you.
Part of it may actually be your performance. Not the lack thereof, but the exceptional quality. If you are indispensable in your current position, you are just as likely to be passed up for promotion as those not qualified.

If you don't wish to see a thread, you can set a thread (or an entire category) to 'Ignore'. This will turn off all notifications for that thread or category.
Admins will interpret this code of conduct based on the spirit, rather than the letter, of the Code. Constantly walking the knife-edge and attempting to rules-lawyer this Code of Conduct shall be considered a violation of the spirit of the Code, and punished accordingly.

Guys. This looks really terrible. I know that you think you're doing the right thing, but you should really rethink this. It makes you look like you're just punching down on the little guys, and that's not gonna win you any friends.

What are you guys, idiots? This is obvious to anyone with half a brain you corrupt bunch of fart-sniffing howler monkeys.
People have said that they're afraid to speak, but I think that you'll find that we're reasonable people, and that we have a diverse set of opinions and viewpoints. Nobody should be afraid to voice an opinion on something. All we ask is that you keep it civil and as constructive as you can manage.
You ever go back and read something you wrote, or think about a conversation you were having, and realize that only in context does something not sound hilariously weird?
That's what this thread is for. Those things that make perfect sense in context, but taken out of context, just sound ludicrously absurd.
Which is why you should not be putting the context in there, either. Just let people's minds go with it.
I'll start:

I think that you're right, of course. Giving people some leeway to downshift is always a good idea.
One of the lines of thinking from the past couple of weeks, though, had to do with other applications of the rules: namely, that when an Admin says stop, you stop.
Those that complied weren't banned. Those that were banned but were otherwise acting with a modicum of civility were those that were unbanned.
The ones that remain banned are edge cases, or the ones that Ganymede and I couldn't agree on for one reason or another. We're getting some fresh faces in, and hopefully they'll weigh in with their thoughts, too. That might change in the future.
The one thing I will solidly say is that those that decided to try and set the house on fire on their way out the door will likely remain so, because they knew full well what they were doing when they soaked the bridge in gasoline and threw a match. But if someone feels very strongly that we should reconsider those as well then they're free to advocate for such, and we'll seriously consider it. But it'd have to be a pretty well-reasoned and compelling argument.
I am grumpy. Short check and lots of bills means that I can pretty much afford to make one grownup thing this week -- pasta aglio e olio. Which is really just a fancy name for something dead simple. Pasta, olive oil, garlic, red pepper flakes, parsley, salt, pepper, lemon juice. Easy.
On the upside, it is delicious.
On the downside, it sits in my stomach like a lead ball.
I rarely make pasta, but it's dirt cheap, and while rocking a whopping $3.27 in my bank account, that's gonna be about the only option.
Ugh. Friday cannot come fast enough.
