RE: Flight of the Golden Crane
After some feedback we've made some changes to the color scheme for the website, with special thanks to @ClockworkEJD for helping with some of the finicky bits. Hopefully this makes it a bit more readable and convenient.
It probably still doesn't conform to the standards of @23quarius and whatever their arcane text ratio sorcery nonsense is. People want me to do math. FFS. (<3 u bud)

RE: Possible Code? A +report function merged with an autologger?
I mean, if you just want the functionality, Ares literally has this out of the box. If you don't need a lot of system you can run a game from day 1.

RE: Fate's Harvest BETA Live (Full Open Soon)
This conversation is great and all, but it's now two pages deep about a single player, and not about the game.
So I have created a new thread in the Hog Pit where you can bitch about Spider and share stories or whatever to your heart's content, and we can get back to talking about the game as a whole.
Thanks.
Derp, aka K2, Fate's Harvest Staffer.

Having some stupid quirk that makes cilantro taste like soap, and everyone around me talks about how good it is. And then finding it is in my peanut sauce enough to ruin it. Blech.
It does taste like soap, and I will fight anyone that says differently.

I don't read the Hog Pit
And that makes crap-talking a player in a game's advertisement thread appropriate... how, exactly? There is a place for that. Ad threads are not the place for that. Please stop, and take it to where it's appropriate. We aren't even supposed to badmouth a -game- in the Ad Thread, from what I've seen about Fallen World's, because it detracts from the overall point of the topic. The Hog Pit exists for a reason. I don't care how much academia is involved with the conversation, it's still a Hog Pit topic.

- "IF THAT BEEPS ONE MORE TIME-" (I never get to the threat. Apparently the tone is enough that it doesn't beep again. This is good because I'm usually too addled to come up with one.)
And it did. So I took the shotgun off the wall and I fired two warning shots. Into his head.
He had it comin'.

RE: UX: It's time for The Talk
@Groth said in UX: It's time for The Talk:
It's complicated because your average MUSH is actually a bunch of nested systems written in a programming language that was designed in order to be storable as a single string while the core commands are all hardcoded.
This. @HelloProject, you keep talking about 'things could be simpler', but honestly? I don't even know what that means in this context. I keep seeing in my head this idea that you want to just type in, "Computer, add a knife to my inventory, give it a +2 damage rating, make it one size level bigger because I'm a giant, and set a note on it that it was a gift from my girlfrirend'. MU doesn't come equipped with Siri, nor is its engine star-trek-esque.
Code creates commands that are either complex or numerous. There is no in between. If you have a system that needs to do five things (not necessarily at the same time), then you end up with either five commands, or one command that can do between 1 and 5 things depending on its syntax, which makes it complicated. (And either way, those five things require documentation).
Nor can you easily have one command that does more than one thing (unless, as above, it has a complex syntax). A command with a simple syntax will do precisely one thing. A MU will not understand the difference between 'add knife' for an inventory command or 'add boobs' for a desc command unless you literally tell it where every possible word would apply, or make it different for every room its used in.
So what exactly are you looking for when you say 'things could be simpler'? Because at the end of the day, I tend to go with "It really can't be."
Edit: Corrected some pre-coffee grammar booboos.

Apparently most of the damage is to the roof and spire. They released interior images earlier. It's not as bad as it could have been.

RE: UX: It's time for The Talk
@HelloProject said in UX: It's time for The Talk:
My solution would have been to just type <attack><target> and have people automatically enter initiative, then have people automatically leave initiative once the opposing party/person is KO'd. Though obviously I'd have a command to leave combat, just in case everyone doesn't get KO'd, or someone leaves combat before getting KO'd
Ok, so, I guess my questions here are as follows:
- Who are people? When you say 'have people automatically enter initiative', who are you talking about? Everyone in the same room?
- If it's everyone in the same room, how to you opt out of combat if you don't wanna join the fight? You'd have to distinguish the fighters from the non-fighters somehow, and give people a way to join in or back out/flee from the fight.
- How are you defining who the opposing party is? The game doesn't know this. All characters are equal characters.
- How are you defining when the opposing party is knocked out? I'm sure there's a flag or an attribute or something that can be set, but more often than not, MUSH combat does not work like MUD combat, and it's not always easy to define when the opposing party is knocked out.
Those questions need to be answered before we can determine if the system can be made better or not.

Brand Mu Day
For those interested, there is another MU-related forum, mostly populated by current and former posters of MSB. It's called Brand MU Day. The link to it is here:
https://brandmuday.mythicus.net
Currently, it is run by a handful of familiar faces. Tinuviel, Tez, and Pyrephox.
I strongly encourage those unhappy with the current state of MSB to go check that community out. It may be more to your liking. Or you can continue to post on both, provided that you're on board with the new rules and are working to help us build something cool. Nobody's getting a black mark here just because they have an account over there.
I'm sure that someone will read this as vaguely threatening, but honestly? I think it's a good thing. People have a place where they can go be around like-minded people on both forums, and plenty of folks in the middle that get along with everyone. And hopefully, the existence of an alternative will cut down on some of the friction that keeps cropping up by trying to keep two very different groups of people interacting in the same space.

from a generation or two ago
Speaking of 'useful stuff for photography from a generation or two ago', you know what I miss? Matte screens. Seriously, when doing color work on the laptop, even a tiny angle adjustment can make it look a different color. I never know what color a thing actually is anymore. With the matte screens, I didn't have to worry about that.
I can't even find these as a custom order thing anymore.

RE: Hello MSBites! Grade your administrators.
The Hog Pit having the largest number of posts does not in any way mean that the majority of the members are posting there. And I can want for more moderation in a posts where the moderators are asking us to grade their performance. That's not blaming the envelope. That is me saying that I wish their was more administrative performativity. Which is the reason this thread currently exists, from what I am gathering.

RE: Hello MSBites! Grade your administrators.
I don't mind its existence. I just think that the mud needs to be kept there, and it should remain muddy. Not bloody. No teeth, no bone chips. There needs to be certain 'beyond the pale' limits even in the Pit, and the mud from the Pit needs to remain squarely in the Pit.
I wouldn't mind seeing it gone. I don't mind seeing it stay. But there definitely needs to be a bar there.

winces That is my second-to-worst nightmare. Why are you completely alone? I would be frantically searching for someone to partner up with. If for no other reason than to have someone to talk to about things that doesn't risk ethics violations and help me put out fires.
You have my deepest sympathies.

RE: Hello MSBites! Grade your administrators.
"If I can't be negative and such wherever the hell I feel like, then I will just quit posting."
Fine? I mean, for those of us who want a more civil discourse in areas that aren't the Hog Pit, that's no great loss. Hell, that's one of the best solutions so far, honestly. If everyone who can't follow basic rules of civil discussion quits participating, then the mods don't even have to do anything.
It's because of the attitude stated above -- the willful disregard for civility in areas clearly delineated for it -- that we're asking for more moderation in the first place.
