@Ganymede said in The Great PC Death Dilemma:

What other storytelling medium has 134 main characters.

      Apparently, the Stranger Things series.

Very few MUs have 134 main characters participating in the same story at the same time. There are factions, groups, etc. that can sensibly divide things.

It's more like a big franchise like the MCU or One Chicago or CSI where each separate storyline has its MCs and they cross over occasionally.

Honestly, treating every MU PC as a main ensemble TV character has never been a problem for me as a game-runner. Some may get more "air time" than others due to their respective schedules and inclination to get involved in Stuff, but nobody's a supporting character/extra unless they choose to be.

@ganymede said in Which canon property/setting would be good for a MU* ?:

I'm almost certain that folks using FS3's new system, via Ares, can attest to the absence of PvP on their games.

PvP has nothing to do with system and everything to do with the way your game/setting is created.

There was a GoT game using FS3 that had PvP for important duels and stuff. 100 had some PvP elements with Grounders vs Arkers but they weren't (usually) trying to kill each other. Y'know, except the one who shot my archer in the head 🙂

But FS3 is not designed for PvP games or for magical games, so I agree it's not a good fit for FF.

    • RE: Stranger Danger?

Where I've landed after all these years:

      • I stick to friendly co-op games.
      • I don't do PVP or TS.
      • I enforce firm boundaries on IC relationships. (Though even that has proved exhausting enough that I am now leery of romantic RP with anyone I don't already know and trust OOCly.)
      • I'm choosy about the games I play on - usually either my own or ones from people I trust.

I feel bad that you've had such horrible experiences, though, because I have made several life-long friends through MUSHing. Not just "oh they RP well so it's fun to play a game with them" but true friends. Yes, we must be cautious and sensible with any interactions on the internet, but I don't think we need to be so paranoid that we cut ourselves off from meaningful interaction.

@thenomain We were just talking about Ads. It's kind of disconcerting to have an Ads category with Ads for games that no longer exist. It would be like opening the classifieds section in a newspaper and find pages on pages of ads for stores that closed years ago 🙂

      @Ghost said in Stranger Danger?:

Do you have issues finding/maintaining RP with players once they find out you're not open to IC-relationship stuff? That was always kind of my issue: I was able to find a lot of available RP, but people would suddenly have "electrical storm" or "rl emergency" or "sorry gotta go" when it was established I wasn't into TS/relationship RP with the person.

Nope. I've had loads of folks RP my character's besties, coworkers, frenemies, found family, actual family... even unrequited suitors.

Even when I have done IC romances, for many years I've been very up-front about being exclusively FTB. Never had anyone be like: "Oh well in that case... poof."

Might come down to the games, dunno.

You might be amused by this barefoot running trend thing

Indeed! Now I mostly wear 'barefoot shoe' models (oxymoron non-withstanding) because they let me walk on my toes. I've always been uncomfortable wearing shoes, like I have straight-jackets on my feet. I never imagined that there was a strong correlation between toe-walking and autism. It seems so random.

I was also hyperlexic as a kid, so it's interesting how two so opposite symptoms (hyper and hypo) can be associated with the same condition.

      Other random relatables:

@il-volpe said in Autism and The MU* Community:

MUSHing, where people's social-signals are right there in text, allows me to play at being far more socially adroit than I am.

      This.

@kk said in Autism and The MU* Community:

One thing I will say is that autism often looks different in females than men.

I've read that due to social pressures, women tend to become better at masking than men do, so that tracks.

had to be corralled back into what was socially acceptable even though it made absolutely no sense (and still doesn't).

That was an NPC, wasn't it? Or was it a PC? Huh... now I don't remember. I think they were all too busy shooting the Tank-lady.

Yes, you're right. Though at least one other Arker PC took a potshot. And it wasn't really true PvP since I was the only one on the other team and went into it knowing my team would lose and went out of my way not to target other PCs. So not the best example but my point still stands 🙂

@enoch Fair enough. That's a deal-breaker for me, as it would essentially involve a re-write of my character if anyone close to them happened to leave the game. But kudos to you for setting up a nice site with solid policies (other than that one IMHO) and interesting enough hooks to briefly tempt someone who's not normally into the comic genre.

Which is why I really like FS3. It's just easiest for 'dive in and go.'

Really? I mean, sure if you're doing mass combats it's comparatively easy for running something, but for anything else? It's a basic "roll and count success" system just like a million other RPG systems out there. I don't see how it's any easier to dive into. And it certainly doesn't help with generating content, as @Arkandel says. What will the players do in those settings other than relationships and BarRP... that's the key question.

Do you play a lot of superhero games? Because the continuity builds up fast and thick.

No I've never played one, in fact, but I fail to see how it's any different from B5 or Firan or Aether or Star Wars or BSGU or a dozen other roster/FC games that suffer from the same basic problem. Taking over a character that's been played by someone else for months or years comes with baggage, no question.

ETA: To clarify, I'm referring specifically to in-game events and relationships, not pre-conceived notions from this or that version of a comic.

Sometimes you don't want to deal with somebody else's past fuckbuddies. You just want to play Spider-Man.

And if that's a given game's policy, that's their business (which is what I said to @Enoch's original policy). But if you want your game's RP to have lingering/persistent meaning, then you can't just ignore it whenever a player feels like it.

Why on God's green Earth would anyone deny a mid-morning snack? I'm a fucking adult who runs a law firm, and I happily let my staff eat wherever and whenever they want.

The dropped the mid-morning snacks because they didn't want the kids taking their masks off while eating, and apparently it's too much trouble to coordinate taking them to the cafeteria or auditorium or whatever where they can space out more.

And however lame that is, whatever, but MY KID NEEDS A SNACK TO FUNCTION. I asked that they send him to the nurse's office or whatever to get a snack, but they refused. Because having him sit there starving and unable to concentrate is somehow preferable to him missing 15 minutes of English.

      RAGE.

People who are more comfortable with a system from the word 'go' (CG) are more likely to ST in said system. They want to have a grasp of what they're doing.

Yeah I think it goes both ways though. A simple/flexible system like FUDGE, Fate or FS3 is easy to grasp because it's, well, simple. But that puts more burden on the STs to try to figure out how to apply that system in specific circumstances. What do you roll for what and with what modifiers? Contrast that with a more robust yet complicated system like Shadowrun or 7th Sea or Cortex where there are lots of specific rules for everything. It's more to learn, but easier to apply with less debate. (Rules lawyers will, of course, debate everything.)

      YMMV obviously.

Those are for the most part the people that are gone from the game.

And the fact that it's only "for the most part" and not "a new policy has outlawed that crap because it's obnoxious and unacceptable" is the problem you seem to not want to acknowledge as a potential problem.

If I pose something obviously wrong based on an obvious OOC misunderstanding, allowing someone to react to that ICly strikes me as no less ridiculous than a director allowing actors in a period drama to react in-character to one of them accidentally leaving their cell-phone on. The proper response is to either gracefully pretend it didn't happen or to yell "Cut!" and fix it. Nobody expects the actors to stay in-character all: "OMG what sorcery is this? GET HIM!" (though that would be a pretty funny blooper on the DVD version)

@greenflashlight said in Movie / TV / Streaming Peeves or Whatever:

I'm not saying everyone should go through a Keanu-level Quantico training regime, but, like, mandatory safety training or something with a written test at the end, you know?

But they do get safety training on how to handle firearms on set. It's just that the industry has decided that it's safer to train them to rely on the experts than to try to manage the guns themselves. The issue here isn't really an absence of established industry safety policies and training, but an apparent failure to adhere to them.

To go back to my skydiver analogy - all skydivers receive some safety training, but packing parachutes requires a specialized level of training that not everyone has. Those who don't rely on the experts. There are safety procedures involved in doing so, presumably involving double and triple-checking everything. Now if some parachute-packer fails to follow those well-established safety procedures and someone dies, that's obviously tragic. There should be an investigation to see what exactly went wrong and what can be done to keep it from happening again. But a knee-jerk reaction of "well just expect everybody to pack their own parachutes" is probably the wrong way to go, safety-wise. That's how I feel about expecting actors to be able to check for themselves what kind of ammo a gun is loaded with.

Of course, nothing stops the actor from raising a red flag if they see other people on set failing to adhere to said safety procedures. Claudia Black has a nice Twitter Thread talking about that.

@auspice I think you missed the part where I said "ditch merits if you hate them as much as I do". My first chargen on B5 was based on WoD and it was a big inspiration for FS3 so I know how similar they are. But we can just agree to disagree.

ETA: in FS3 the system it's also rolling brawn+athletics, it's just that the code doesn't make you type the attribute when it's the obvious one. You could do the same with your wod code. So the mechanics are indeed identical outside of modifiers from powers or merits.
