I've asked for silence and peace. I didn't get it. Like any courtroom, an arbiter must ensure that the rule of law and authority is respected. If my several requests to let things stay and abate aren't enough to get the point across, I am compelled to remind members again that bannings are within my discretion.

The following folks have been banned for violating my several requests for silence regarding farfalla's banning, Derp's appointment to staff, and the closing of the Current Events thread in the Politics section.

Beyond that, Citadel was very good. If it had been ME3's real epilogue, it would be the best.

Because I got Citadel after I finished the game, I do consider the DLC to be the real epilogue.

    • RE: Spitballing for a supers Mush

      @tangent

The word "dying" is probably not the word I should have used, but what I meant to describe was "dying interest" in that kind of game.

The Super Games I've been on have largely been consent-based and/or trait-based. I have tried -- I could have tried harder -- to break into the community. But to be fair? I don't know much about modern comics save for what I can peel off the internet. I feel as if this puts me behind the 8-ball on these games.

That aside, it seems clear to me anecdotally that having the same people is a bad thing. No matter how many good players a game has, the bad ones will drive off newer or established players unless staff steps in. And staff, in my limited third-party experience, seems awfully reluctant to do that, perhaps because it's the same community over and over.

So, suppose for a moment that Mr. Johnson, or anyone, is looking to build a new community of players. If you want to do that, I would suggest creating a new model or paradigm. Maybe try out some other games out there that have lasted a while and see what works on them. See whether that could work for your comic game.

I have rarely regretted stepping out of my usual World of Darkness box. The limited time I have played on super MUSHes tell me that there are a lot of good players on them who may be willing to slip into a new model or paradigm for the opportunity to play a superhero.

      I don't love stupid people.

And I don't like it when people tell me I have to love someone because they are family.

I figure, once I was legally considered an adult I had the ability to pick and choose who I decide to associate with, am friends with, or love. And my criteria is pretty simple.

I'll be the first to tell you if I'm unsure of something, but when I'm pretty sure I'm right I will stop listening and do my own research to confirm or deny my suspicions. If you keep nattering at me, I will throat-punch you, and stop caring about you.

I deal with people's shit every day. I don't need any extra stupid in my life.

      To hell with that shit.

@Sparks said in General Video Game Thread:

I'm sorry, arguably? No. FF6 is factually and objectively the best.

      ...

If they are going to be doing remakes on the apparent quality level of that FF7 remake they finally showed off at E3? Give me one of FF6.

      I concur, and write separately.

The score for FF6 is an incredible achievement, with themes for every playable character. It is probably the best console game of all time, and probably my favorite one until The Last of Us. But it is the music that really sets it apart.

Celes' operatic theme is an actual vocal piece. You have metal versions of the final battle, like this one or this one done by the composer's own cover band. And the composer, Nobuo Uematsu, is so beloved that his music has hit the textbooks of Japanese students as examples of music composition.

FF6 has already technically been re-mastered, and that version is available on tablets. It's well-worth the money.

But this is the epitome of the Final Fantasy series for me. I really like Final Fantasy VIII, which I think was beyond its time when it was released, but it can't compare. Then again, the end sequence for the game is its own little masterpiece, given that it was made for the PS1. For me, it was poetry, and effectively -- and without words -- ties the entire game together.

There's a million different interpretations of FF8's ending. And I have talked to dozens of people about it, and each has their own understanding. I think that is critically important, as the game really is about things like thought, memory, and the connections we have with others across time and space. That damned song Eyes on Me (sung by Faye Wong) is such an earworm that my eyes tear up to this day when I hear it. The convoluted plot aside, the graphics and cinematography are way, way advanced for its time (1999).

(Edit to add: I saw the reveal trailer, and was mildly disappointed that SquareEnix is going to essentially clean up the graphics only. Updating the models further would have been nice.)

      @tnp

      I'm sorry, that was unclear.

Our decision to unban certain folks, and not others, was not because we were petitioned to do so by a member. We had decided to review the bans a while back, and we so far agreed on those announced. And we may decide to unban more accounts in the future.

That's what I meant to say. No one is required to petition to be let back in for their account to be unbanned. Sorry for the confusion.

Considering the fact that there's no microtransactions, no DLCs, not even any pre order or deluxe/complete/GOTY editions and it's...just a game. That was put out. Without any kind of extra bullshit attached to it? Back when you just wanted to buy a game to enjoy? Without worrying about some possible potential expense?

That fact alone is why, to me, it's worth $60.

      This convinces me.

I mean, I'll get the game at some point between the end of Vampyr and the release of The Last of Us Part 2.

You can either compromise the powers so that the code can accommodate them, you can expand the code to accommodate all kinds of super things, or you can use the code for certain things and deal with others through manual GM intervention.

Given the discussion above, I think the general consensus is that an effective resolution system is worth compromising powers within a combat setting. Hence, why some of us believe your system is super-wicked-effective for a superhero game.

      Please stop bringing up RfK.

You left before the game got interesting and mostly managed by the players. The last few months of the game were excellent, and that's when things were very hands-off.

Until you can find me a staffer who is going to dedicate 10 hours every single day to RPing NPCs and running plots for everybody on their game. And 5 more hours on that same day handling various +jobs.

Why? It has to be repeated that, while Shav did a lot for the game, she wasn't as active in running plots in the end. And, even at the end, there were people clambering to take over.

Any game will "succeed" if you have staff slavishly running stuff 24/7 for players.

This is untrue, and you know it.

As for what @Rook said, personally I put a lot of the onus on WoD players and MUers in general, more than the games.

And that's fine because this is why RfK worked. A not-so-small number of players on that game "slaved away" in the RP mines generating an immense amount of activity, the likes of which I haven't seen since.

The vast majority of MU'ers appear to be incredibly lazy and entitled when it comes to making little effort to get involved in things and expecting everybody else to feed them story.

This is neither a reason to discount past successes nor a reason to become one of these incredibly lazy people.

Too long, too dull, too mind-numbing. The open world aspect conflicted with the story. Horizon Zero Dawn seems to embrace both open world and story, but does so in a rogue-like style, which makes the open world aspect more tolerable.

@surreality said in Which canon property/setting would be good for a MU* ?:

Of course learning a new system is harder. The first time someone plays an established system, they have the same learning curve, however, and it wasn't an obstacle to them then.

If someone doesn't want to learn new mechanics, it is on them to say 'no' to a game that requires them to do so, not on the game's creators to refuse to do something new or eschew anything that isn't repeatedly trod ground to benefit that person's laziness and/or preference.

The odd part of this phenomenon is that, while the World of Darkness' mechanics are simple its content is not. Meanwhile, Arx's mechanics are arguably even simpler, and people will still consider it an impediment to play.

As another example, Star Wars SAGA edition has simple mechanics, but its Feats and Talents require an almost-encyclopedic knowledge in order to manipulate those mechanics efficiently to your benefit. Meanwhile, some people believe that Unisystem or FS3 is hard to grok, when they are anything but.

I think it's just familiarity. I like the World of Darkness because I know the source material so damned well, or well-enough that I can work my way through games easily. It wasn't as easy when I was on Arx not because Arx's mechanics were hard but because I have over two decades of familiarity with White Wolf's stuff.

That said, getting into White Wolf stuff takes a considerable amount of time and guidance. Vampire is particularly complex, even as Mage is system-wise.

This is probably not the place for this, but how different is Ares from the standard FS3 stuff? Like, sheetwise is it still 4 attributes that go 1-4 and custom-input skills that go 1-12?

Ares / FS3.3 is different from FS3 v.2. FS3.3 is, from my understanding, more customizable insofar as what you put in as attributes. If 8th Sea follows BSG:U, and I think it does, then you have 6 attributes that go 1-5, and custom-input skills that go 1-7.

      I think.

What I do know is that the system is gorgeous, and Faraday's working on a web portal and a whole bunch of nifty shit.
