You can teach people about how gritty and dark the game is in a way that leaves them excited, or despondent. Despondent people leave, and don't come back. Excited people stick around.

This is the best take-away here.

I have no grief with games that are thick on IC consequences or that eschew OOC communications on the game. And being up front about that is just fine with me as well.

But this was not the message initially conveyed, in my opinion.

Anyhow, good luck to anyone who plays on this game in the future.

But anyways. Is this a thing? Am I alone in this?

You're not alone. I'm the same way.

A lot of people suck at telling stories. My partner is one of them. I love her very much, but she has no idea how to filter out the shit that isn't funny, isn't important, or isn't relevant to what she may be trying to convey with the story.

Some of the partners at work are like this. They like to regale me with war stories, while I clearly have 32,000+ pages of documents to review in four hours. And the war stories have little or nothing to do with what they came to talk to me about, which is usually some one-or-two-line answer about mechanic's liens or some other arcane area of real property law.

I guess I just dislike being talked at. Because I don't like to talk at people. If I don't have something to say, I won't say anything; I'll just ask a question to keep the conversation moving.

Will we still be able to do that after Trump's glorious tax cuts? I know a lot of things that used to be deductible aren't anymore.

      Yeah. Like spousal support.

I can't wait to hear the collective outcry from middle-class white male America.

      @rahnevyn said in Armageddon MUD:

Yes, explicitly, that is the proposition of Armageddon. It's a roleplay-enforced world where there are permanent consequences and life is not fair. You may be mugged or murdered by someone you never expected to assault you, possibly you have not even met. No IC mistakes are required in order for bad things to happen to your character. Typically though, if you wind up mugged or murdered, your "mistake" was that you trusted the wrong person or wandered into an area that your character was probably not cut out to be in.

See, this is a good answer without equivocation. I like it.

MUSH player tend to eschew this sort of mentality, though. If I wanted to play this sort of game, I'd pick up Dark Souls, as I said before, or maybe go plug away at some PvP MMORPG or something.

The argument has been new players are punished for mistakes and no they aren’t. If that’s the circular argument then yes it will continue to rage on, because the people that play now say it doesn’t happen.

This is not a circular argument. This is a simple argument with two sides.

That said, this is what is catching my eye and mind right now:

      @evilcabbage said in Armageddon MUD:

despite what hedge would tell you, we "are" very welcoming to new players. the welcome might be an introduction to being mugged and murdered, or being abused, or being treated lower than low because you're a commoner and that's a templar, but you are being introduced to the world. (Emphasis added.)

Now, if I'm taking what you're saying at face value, that leads me to the conclusion that being mugged, murdered, abused, or treated poorly may occur, but not as a consequence of making an IC mistake.

      Am I understanding this correctly?

Because, if so, I still don't know why most people would be interested in a gaming experience where they may, for not fault of their own, get killed or robbed when they hit the Grid.

Now, if this isn't the case, someone's lying. But if this is the case, then it's good to know that I may be drubbed like a rented whore if I play.

No, I didn't like Dark Souls.

I’d argue that a message board with a new player question forum and a discord with a channel IS plenty.

I'd argue that a game which would rather beat, murder, or mug a new player to adhere to IC realism rather than offer OOC compromise is a pretty inhospitable place.

      Count me out.

i don't want to get into a heated debate about how quotation marks can be used for emphasis with you, but it is one possible way to use them, yes.

I'm not familiar with how AAVE works, but I'm very certain that proper English does not include using quotation marks to emphasize particular words.

As it goes on this board, it makes little sense to do so when there are buttons that allow you to bold or italicize words for emphasis, and where you have demonstrated that you know how to use them.

Why is the word "are" in quotations?

And why would I want to play on a game where my introduction to it may be an IC mugging, murder, or abuse incident?

Is this your game's concept of "fun"?

      It's not mine.

I play a vampire on Fallcoast, and I'd be happy to play with you when I can. My evenings are limited.

Flashpoint: Gotham is run by folks in Aussieland, I think. So, I've heard they are more active in those hours.

But he's not why we lost that game. The Jag defense just...disappeared in the 4th quarter. Big penalties, no pressure on Brady, Bouye and Ramsey getting burned.

      It's fatigue.

The Jags held the line for, what, three quarters? Ten points? That's damn fine against Brady and the Patriots.

But the Jags couldn't score worth a damn, and that's always been the story. They had the Steelers' number, but had nothing for the Patriots. And they might have lost to the Steelers, but for some of Tomlin's questionable calls.

Next game? It's Tom's to lose. The Eagles outlasted the Vikings' defense, but they are up against the QB with the most rings and the coach with the most wins.

      I felt the same.

I got confused. I thought MUDs were generally discretion free. My experiences were mostly negative because of PKing and General OOC uncooperative behavior.

But having an integral function hooked to staff discretion is kind of bananas.

I give them about a 15 % chance I don't think they will win, I don't think it will be all that close, but Tom Coughlin and a strong defense both of which Jacksonville has have proven to be Patriots kryptonite in the past.

      I give them far less.

Repeat after me: Blake Bortles sucks.

The Steelers aren't the same without Dick LeBeau. They couldn't contain the Jaguars the first time around, and failed the second time. Belichick is not going to make that mistake.

I really dislike New England, but I am not going to bet against them in Gillette Stadium in the winter. Bortles isn't Eli Manning.

The reason being is that, while I love my wife, i want to enjoy the show and get hella enganged in it without having to pause while she asks me questions like 'Who is that' and 'Where are they' to which I inevitably have to answer 'My Love, we both just started watching this, i have the exact same amount of information, just watch the show!' But you know, with more specialized language because of our many many years together.

      Act I

      Gany Bae: Who's that?

Gany Bae: I thought you knew everything about comic books.
Ganymede: I thought you didn't like me talking about comics.
Gany Bae: Why are you so mean to me?

I think that's the best part of the thing for me: as a single person, I can make a lot of food in an afternoon/evening and have plenty of leftovers. With my fibro and limited free time, that's a bonus.

The best part about being a single person is making whatever fuck kind of food you want, and not have to worry about monkey-shits or a picky partner that don't understand the tender love and care necessary to make Chinese pot-stickers from scratch.

Or a char-siu-inspired roasted pork tenderloin.

Fall-off-the-bone whole roasted chickens in InstantPots.

      Because I like to cook.

Not that anyone in this goddamned townhouse seems to give a fuck.

      Ingrates.
