And sure, this 'doesn't matter' until the day someone destroys their equipment trying to get the 'stuck feedback' out.

And why is lying the go-to in the first place? What benefit did lying serve in this position that just telling the truth wouldn't have done better?

I'm dumb enough and new enough to the community to suggest the opposite - the sheer popularity of Arx is why we don't have more games. It has a monopolistic effect, drawing people over there because That's Where Everyone Else Is.

I hadn't thought of that, but it makes sense. Maybe all the small games are so small because they're for the niche groups who can't fit in with the mainstream. God knows every game I've looked at apping into lately, I've been approached for increasingly bizarre and gross sexual relationships by the players who seem to think nothing of asking if a stranger would please app things I don't even think I can publicly describe for fear of triggering survivors.

@RDC Are Abyssals even on the docket yet? I kind of thought they've only gotten as far as finishing the Lunars and prepping the Exigents.

No, he was a poorly trained kid at a customer service job who said something stupid.

He made a bad choice and the outcome of that choice had consequences? Specifically, the low-stakes consequence of a person he'll never meet saying something snippy to him in response to a lie?

I'm really not getting what the great injustice is here.

@GreenFlashlight That's... creepy as fuck. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with people? Don't approach a guest, tell them what to app unless they bloody well ask for an IC in to your own char or something.

I think the logic goes something like, "I'm horny; I can't understand other people except as they can fulfill my desires; therefore let me tell you my genuinely disturbing and sometimes criminal fantasies."

@wildbaboons said in Why are there so many MUs set in Maine?:

Are people aiming for the old colonial time history with spooky, desolate woods to go with it?

I think history is a big part of it. As countries go, America doesn't have much sense of history to it. New England is old enough and respectful enough of its heritage that it can feel very different from the rest of the nation. Maine is also coastal, so you can allow concepts that involve the ocean and have lots of PB albums full of bikini shots for the wiki; and the large, fictional city allows you to assert that anything you want to exist in the setting, does.

    • RE: RL things I love

I sometimes think about how shameful it is that the artificial society we've constructed is so torturous for humans to exist in but can be handled with such good grace by dogs. "Warm house, no wind, lots of food, soft places to lie down on, people to love? This is paradise!"

Isn't that what Shangrila is for, though? Why does it need to escape that particular quarantine zone?

Because the sexual fantasies are not separable from the power fantasy. I won't give details in case the people who did it read this post, but there's a level of indoctrination involved in a lot of these propositions; of mixing apparent friendliness and support with escalating depravity so I would come to view it as a normal part of the friendship; of trying to talk me into turning my no into a yes and thereby claiming control of my boundaries; of isolating me from the rest of the game's community so I would be dependent on them; of tying me into a conspiracy I was obligated to keep from others.

If you just want to send dirty text messages at people who are there for it, you go to Shang. If an illicit mutual masturbation session isn't the goal, you gotta go elsewhere.

@surasanji Did 3e keep the 300/300/100 shard cap?

Nope. Exaltation is no longer a known quantity with known rules. It's a miracle that the rest of us can only try to figure out by extrapolation. And yes, there are new kinds of Exalted! In addition to the Getimians (anti-Sidereals) and Liminals (animated corpses), there are the Exigent Exalted, which could be created by any god desperate enough to pay the price to make them. I don't believe we have rules for any of them yet, though.

I just saw a fashion advert on Facebook for stylish anti-pollution air masks.

If that's not peak capitalism I don't know what is.

Health insurance is worse, but this is damn close.

What did you find sucky about it, though?

I already plan to ask her directly for feedback on what we can do, but I don't want the onus to be on a new hire.

I am not trans, but in general, when someone asks me how to best show respect to me, I do not feel that I have been burdened. I feel that the other person is listening to me and taking my needs seriously, as well as dealing with me like I'm an individual rather than a homogeneous demographic.

Otherwise, I guess just make it clear that you will not tolerate transphobic behavior, but in a discreet way that doesn't make the new woman feel singled out. Maybe don't mention anything at all, and just bring the hammer down if someone breaks the rules.

Sure. My intent was to agree with and expand on your point, not to correct it. I have no argument with anything you said.

@GreenFlashlight Let's not forget these are some of the same idiots who think that periods are like bodily waste functions -- that women can just hold it in until it's convenient, but are apparently so repulsive and inconsiderate that we can't be bothered and would rather just bleed all over ourselves and everything/everyone around us.

I'm not sure which I find funnier and/or more terrifying -- them thinking that's actually how any of it works or that a bunch of people looked at these assholes and went, "By golly, they really seem to have things together. We should elect them to Be In Charge."

No one ever went broke underestimating the masses, and all that.

I've got this theory that the granular and hierarchical structure of the traditional Masq-of-our-own WoD MUSH is a filthy sodden sock nourishing the trenchfoot that is traditional WoD MUSH toxic fuckery.

Well, yes. Hierarchies inherently separate people from one another, and the powerful from consequences by insuring there's no oversight except among those hand-picked by the powerful to be among the powerful: their friends, in other words. The hell of it is, most people seem to want inequities to continue in the hopes of one day profiting from them, rather than removing them (insert that Futurama meme about how one day Frye might be rich and then people like him better watch out), so I don't know how to solve the problem. Transparent communication between staff and players seems to be the key answer, but I'll be damned if I know how to make that happen.
