I can't remember any white characters that were racist.

I haven't seen the show, but isn't there a white cop who profiles Sam and is about to arrest him for bothering Bucky despite Bucky not being bothered? I swear I've seen a clip of that.

In a world where Kanye West exists, is a black billionaire playboy really that unthinkable?

In a world where the police murdering an unarmed black person on camera is okay because the black person committed a crime once, it's hard to imagine people being okay with a black man who wears a fighter jet like a suit and has orbital weapon platforms (Veronica) answerable only to him.

If you want it to be a strong real world parallel, then black American is hardmode but anywhere Asia would hardly raise an eyebrow.

It's not that I want a real world parallel. It's that if the movie is going raise questions, it should be prepared to answer them, and suddenly Tony's story about how he built a suit that is also a fighter jet is less interesting to me than Howard's story about how he built an industrial empire so powerful it left his kid unanswerable to United States government.

I don't feel being white is particularly key to Tony Stark or Spider-Man in part because their iconic look is fully suited up.

I think being white is pretty key to Tony Stark, only because I'd very much want to know the backstory of how a black American got to be the richest man in the world after inheriting a position as the government's primary if not sole weapons supplier from his father during World War II. In a fictional world we're meant to understand closely parallels our own, him having those advantages in America while not being white opens a lot of question about how his planet's history unfolded differently from ours.

Xiran Jay Zhao is new and doesn't seem to be terribly prolific, but I can't tell you how educating I've found their videos in which they dissect American cartoons for Asian representation... or misrepresentation, as the case may be.

@wizz My concern is, it might not matter. America is sprinting toward the apocalyptic finish line of unfettered capitalism and is poised to take the entire planet with us when we cross over it.

I will just call everything you painstakingly labor to give me 'opinion'

I think America's inability to understand the difference between fact and fiction is the surest sign the nation cannot recover from the death spiral it's in.

I have received a bill for some X-rays I got as part of a work comp claim. It being a work comp claim, this bill is not my responsibility, which the office staff at the radiology department should know because I told them so when I was there. The bill I've received has a warning that if I don't pay it immediately, they'll turn it over to a collection agency and fuck with my credit. It's for thirty-eight dollars. They're threatening me over the cost of five value meal combos at McDonald's, which cost is not for me to pay because, not to belabor the point, it's a comp claim and my employer is responsible for the injury I suffered which led to me seeking treatment in the first place.

      Incompetent bandits.

I don’t think anyone was being very serious about this being an actual goal.

Recognized and agreed, but it feels like the kind of joke that only gets made by people who believe they would never be subject to it. I don't know how Aria feels, but that can get under my skin.

@ganymede That's what I was saying. I wasn't advocating tube-tying over vasectomies, just showcasing how much easier it is for men to get it than women, and yet men will scream bloody murder at the idea of having it done like it will end their lives for forever.

I've heard things on TV that make it sound like men consider their virility a defining aspect of their personality.

I just realized She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is a failed TV show because at no point did Catra get the zoomies.

Agreed. It seems many countries are much more intent on protecting fetuses from abortions than caring for and supporting them once they are actually born.

I suppose it's the cheaper option.

It's less that than that a fetus is the perfect minority to advocate for. It can't contradict your narrative or criticize your methods or ask you to listen to its perspective before you begin speaking for it, and because it hasn't been born yet it hasn't committed any crimes you can be associated with. Once it's born, it gains a voice and loses its use as a political prop, so they kick it to the curb with a line about how it should have had a strong enough moral character to have been born to a richer family and maybe if it weren't so lazy it would learn to pull itself up by its bootie straps.

@cupcake I'm so sorry for your loss, but I'm also so proud that you loved your baby enough to perform that last kindness even though it's obviously breaking your heart. Thank you for loving him so well.

Would it help you to talk about Rock and share some memories, or would that just open the wound?

Nono, I understand what you're saying, man. I just insist that Sonic's fandom's reputation is overblown.

I don't doubt that. I also don't mean to imply that the Sonic fandom is somehow uniquely cringey, or that knowing in advance some people will be weird is a good reason not to try (if we did that, nothing would ever get done). The PR is just an angle a game would have to figure out how to manage.

      What the what?

It's from a story I didn't create but that I'd rather not give traffic to, that encapsulates my experience with online Sonic fan communities. It was my effort to clarify what I believed Ominous was implying.
